~ When did you visit and which restaurant did you visit?
We visited on thursday 10th (sorry, have had a busy week!!) - and went to the Charter in Aylesbury
~ Who were you with?
Husband, plus DS 12 and DD9
~ What did you and your group choose from the menu?
My husband and I both had breaded mushrooms (different dips though!), DS is at the age of wanting adult menu, but can't always finish it, but had the nachos for 1 and DD had the garlic bread from the kids menu
For mains I had steak with pepper sauce, plus mash as I didnt want chips. H had the ribs and chicken dish, which was recommended by our waiter Josh, DS had gammon and was very pleased to be allowed to have an egg and pineapple rather than one of the other and DD had chicken pops (I think that was what it was called), chips and baked beans - when eating out I tend to let her have what she likes!!!
Only DD could manage pudding - she had the mini chocolate challenge.
Drinks were ordered as soon as we were seated - we all had the refillable option (lemonade and diet pepsi in our case). Again, we wouldn't normally allow the kids fizzy, but when eating out as its for a treat, they are allowed! The refillable does make for a good deal, as I do find drinks bump a bill up, especially as DD tends to have finished hers before we even start eating.
I chose the mushrooms as a bit of a retro thing - they've been on menus for years! I found them a bit tasteless to be honest, the mushroom was way too hot, yet the outside cooled quickly. The mushroom was watery and a bit slimy. Overall they were a bit greasy for my liking, but the dips were nice. DS liked his nachos - a huge portion for one as a starter.
My steak was cooked exactly as I had requested - medium - and there was no issue at all me requesting mash (I knew it was elsewhere on the menu anyway) rather than chips. The pepper sauce was nice, but could have done with a bit more of it - at an extra £1.79 if I had been paying, it was not good value.
H enjoyed the ribs, I tried some and they were really nice. The chicken goujons that came with it cheapened the dish a bit really, but he said they were ok.
DS ate all his gammon, and really enjoyed it, as did DD with her kids meal.
~ How was the general ambience of the restaurant?
We arrived at 6pm, and were given a really nice table in a little alcove on our own - we could have eaten amongst other people in the various rooms this place has - I like the fact its all sub divided into areas which makes it feel a bit less faceless. They obviously had a heating problem -the ceiling heaters had their covers off and wires hanging down. The weather had turned this week, and the restaurant was slightly cold.
It got busier as we went through the evening, and there were a lot of people chasing their meals. It appeared understaffed, the staff were rushing around a lot although still were polite and attentive. Although it did take us about 10 minutes to attract attention to pay our bill - then we had a 15 minute wait whilst they were trying to find the vouchers, even though they knew when we arrived we were part of the survey.
~ How knowledgeable were the staff serving you?
Josh was great, very happy to interchange dishes on the menu (my mash) and made a recommendation on dishes too. Whilst there were only four of us, he knew whose meals were whose when delivering them to the table.
I'm only 42, but I am not keen on constantly being called 'guys' by the staff. I don't expect Madam at all (!!) but guys is a bit informal and familiar for my liking. I heard it amongst all the staff, so it must be normal training for them. Not sure what the older generation may think of this! Even DS commented on it on our way home.
~ What did your children think of the visit?
Both enjoyed it and ate everything. When eating out priority for us is that we eat where the kids will eat well (although luckily they are not fussy eaters) and therefore we feel we are getting good value. They are both old enough now not to need entertaining by kids packs, and it is nice to have the time to sit as a family and be able to eat and chat - at home that is often difficult as we both work full time and often long hours.
~ What was the highlight of the visit?
To be honest I am not sure there was one. It was ok value (not withstanding the vouchers), but arguably the food quality and method of prep is aimed at mass covers and of course not freshly cooked to order. But it is what it is, and I can see that there is a market for this type of operation. The people there that evening ranged from couples to families, to groups of women out together, so a real mix.
~ Other comments
This would not be our normal choice of eating out, and to be honest, I think we will stick with our usual Pizza Express / Prezzo choice, which the kids always enjoy. The number of deals and offers is quite confusing, and the menu is vast. Arguably this means choice, but to me it means mass catering and ping and ding / deep fryer!!! However, I can see that it is a good family option, and perhaps if the DCs were younger we would go again.
I suspect this particular site has suffered in the past few weeks, as a brand new Harvester has opened less than 5 mins walk away, and has been full to bursting everytime I have been past. Harvester has the advantage of the salad bar, plus I like the fact there is calorific info on the menu. And we had a good meal there recently for only £45 for the four of us (our bill at the Charter would have been £63), so better value too.
Table Table is from the same stable as Beefeater and Brewers Fayre (owned by Whitbread), and I would say this option probably sits in the middle of those two. With pub restaurants being prevalent now in the market place (with the likes of Hungry Horse, Flaming Grill, Toby and Harvester all developing fast) - I hope TT listen to the wisdom of MNers through this feedback, as overall there is a definite market for what they do.
Thanks Mumsnet for choosing us :)
