Hello

This is the feedback thread for the 20 testers who have received a new YouView TV box and who are currently trying it out in their homes.

YouView say "YouView is a subscription-free television service which seamlessly combines live and catch-up television. The service offers over 70 free to air channels and radio stations via a TV aerial and also connects to any broadband service to bring catch-up and on demand programmes directly to your TV. The TV service, which launched in July 2012, is backed by BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva"

The YouView box allows you to record, pause and rewind TV, as well as featuring BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5.

Testers: we'll be asking you to add feedback twice - we'd like your first impressions now and in a couple of weeks we will add some more questions.

So, in terms of your first impressions. please....
~ give your overall impression when it arrived
~ describe the set up: did you set up your YouView box yourself? If not, who did? How easy did you / your DH/DP etc find it to set up your YouView box?
~ tell us which TV is it on/ in which room
~ share what you/ your family think the first couple of times you used it - what was the best feature and what, if anything, have you struggled with

If you're not a tester, YouView would love to hear from you - for a chance to win a £100 John Lewis voucher please share on this thread the programme(s) you'd love to pause, record or watch again - this could be a programme that's on now, or something special from the last few years or even something from your childhood - the programme which is really special to you and/or your family. Maybe you were on TV as a child and would like to see it again or you want to relive an Olympic moment or even maybe you're a massive Corrie fan and want to never miss an episode! Please share this on the thread and you'll be entered into the prize draw.

thanks
MNHQ

Please note: The final questions have now been added to the thread on Tues 2 April at 11:30

~ How long did it take you to understand how to use YouView?
30 minutes max, it's very intuitive to use.
~ Has your child/children used YouView? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?
the DCs use it all the time (more's the pity), although they still don't know about the switch on the back, I told them I need to put in a special number so they can't watch tv at 5am when they get up!
~ Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on YouView so far?
Doctor Who was good, we were away when it was broadcast, so recorded it in HD for when we got back.
~ Which of the following services have you most enjoyed so far? Live TV/ on-demand/7 day catch up
4od is brilliant, we couldn't get it on our old box, and it has all the Time Teams since the beginning!
~ Who in your family has used your YouView box the most?
DS (age 11) watches all the Top Gear on it, all the time!
~ What have you found YouView most useful for so far? Catching up on

shows you've missed/ entertaining the kids/finding something to watch to pass time/ watching TV live/ listening to the radio/ search functionality, backwards 7 day programme guide, on demand players, record functionality
The HD record functionality is very good, we use that a lot, as usually one or other of us is out of an evening and misses a programme, this way we can record it and both watch it when convenient. I like that you can scroll back and get tv on demand via the programme guide. it saves faffing about through iplayer menus.

lindsey3uk · 05/04/2013 01:16

Home and away - I could watch it all day, pause rewind watch, pause rewind watch. Drive the kids mad!

HermioneE · 05/04/2013 01:29

Would love to pause/rewind Nashville. We are loving that at the minute but if DD screams then we miss bits!

Doogle2 · 05/04/2013 11:09

The programme I would like to see again is Ant and Dec's SMTV live! It was great fun and my boys would really love it Grin

threepiecesuite · 05/04/2013 14:03

I'd love to re-watch Cold feet from beginning to end. Such a brilliant, brilliant programme that was. Now the characters are my age, I think I'd enjoy it even more.

Willemdefoeismine · 05/04/2013 15:14

Non-Tester here. There are two entire TV series that have really made a mark on me and which I'd love to revisit:

"Little House on The Prairie" which I followed from the beginning but think I missed the last couple of series because I was a student and it was no longer the 'cool' thing to be watching

"ER" because I was a fan from the first series before it became compulsory, required viewing. I fell by the wayside (rather) once I'd had first DC and couldn't stay awake to watch it in its later evening slot! I think I missed a lot of significant Abby history once Carter was no longer her boyfriend and I would love to follow her storyline from the beginning (as I'd done with Hathaway) to the sweet end she more than deserved!

Happy TV watching days!

worldgonecrazy · 05/04/2013 15:35

Non-tester here. The Goodies would get my vote.

Trills · 05/04/2013 16:15

Not a tester.

I'd like there to be a rule that for any season of a show that is currently playing, all of that season must be kept on the catchup service until the whole season is done.

So if you get into something on episode 6 you don't discover that old episodes are only kept for a month and you can't see episode 1!

youviewyahoo · 05/04/2013 16:36

How long did it take you to understand how to use YouView?

Me, I am still finding my way around it as I don?t get a look in. DH has worked out how to find anything motor sport related much to his delight.

Has your child/children used YouView? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?

Very quickly for all 4 of them ? even the youngest who is 8 years old understands it better than me, he says he goes on guide and just presses ?r? for record. He also showed me how to find the Coronation Street catchup episodes!

Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on YouView so far?

DS aged 16 has recorded loads of History channels (hopefully will help his GCSE/A grades)
Football matches ? match of the day which is usually on too late for 8 year old son
My name is Earl
Peep Show
Coronation Street
Sponge Bob
Top gear
My mad fat diary
Movies on bbci player

Which of the following services have you most enjoyed so far? Live TV/ on-demand/7 day catch up

On demand and I enjoy 7 day catch up because sometimes I miss episodes of Coronation Street

Who in your family has used your YouView box the most?

My husband, and our three sons aged 16, 13 and 8

What have you found YouView most useful for so far?

Catching up on missed episodes
The 8 year old likes to watch football matches
Watching TV that is on during the day when we are out at school or work, history programmes and quest channel

Indith · 05/04/2013 18:37

must come do the rest of my feedback! Bit manic here.

Titsalinabumsquash · 05/04/2013 18:43

I'd love to watch Eerie Indiana and Greenclaws, two of my favourite shows from when I was a child, they meant my Mum was home for the 1 1/2 hrs she got everyday between her day and night jobs. Best memories ever! Smile

BeebiesQueen · 05/04/2013 20:46

~ How long did it take you to understand how to use YouView?
It isnt difficult to understand, it took minutes, it was just figuring out where all teh buttons were on the remote!

~ Has your child/children used YouView? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?
My dc at 1 and 2 are too young to be able to use the remote by themselves, but my 2 year old does now know she can ask for her fav programmes and mum can find it! she also knows she can ask for it to be paused or rewound and finds this particularly funny.

~ Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on YouView so far?DH was thrilled when he realised he could watch the labrynth last weekend despite missing the first episode. (I think he needs to get a life!)

~ Which of the following services have you most enjoyed so far? Live TV/ on-demand/7 day catch up
the on demand

~ Who in your family has used your YouView box the most?
I have to say its most probably been me, but while dh works long hours and the girls have an early bedtime there is always something too watch

~ What have you found YouView most useful for so far?
catching up on prgrammes we've missed

bluebump · 05/04/2013 21:33

Not a tester. I'd love to get stuck into something like Mad Men as we had to give up Sky+ just after i'd started watching the first series. My 4 year old would just record and watch stuff like Octonauts!

MillyMoo1113 · 05/04/2013 22:30

Old but good ones
Would love to see
Blakes seven
Fawlty towers
Aufweidersein pet

VestaCurry · 06/04/2013 03:50

I'd love to rewind, pause and watch again the original 1930's Flash Gordon, starring Buster Crabb. Episodes were screen over a Christmas hols in the 1970's. I watched it with my brother. I was about 12 and he was 7. We were hooked.

DharmaBumpkin · 06/04/2013 07:13

I'd love to watch a weird little 80's show, I think it was called 'Monkey'. It was very badly over-dubbed, and had 'Tripitaka' (sp?) and three very badly costumed 'animal' friends, and I think the story was based on Buddhist teachings? It was great in a slightly surreal sort of way and I'd love to see it again to see if it really was as cheesy as I remember

I would want to watch and rewind and watch again, over and over, the gymnastics and the trampolining from the Olympics. Not just London 2012 but all the Olympics.

Or, if I had to choose just one moment, I would love to watch the build up to and the routine itself to Torville and Dean's Bolero. I've seen the routine on video loads of times but the clip is just that routine. I would love to watch the whole competition to really put it in context.

Both of the above shows would make me cry. I cry much more when happy things happen than sad things!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/04/2013 20:38

Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes here. Wish they would screen them again or put on catch up.

leesmum · 07/04/2013 00:15

Fingerbobs, Flumps and Chorlton and the Wheelies....would love to see this lot again :)

IceNoSlice · 07/04/2013 07:34

I used to love Byker Grove. I'd watch a bit of that if it was available. Take me right back, it would. Spuggy, PJ and Duncan...

Snog · 07/04/2013 07:37

I miss Champion the Wonder Horse and Belle & Sebastian!
Childhood faves...

Wheresthecoffee · 07/04/2013 11:02

Currently, we'd love to pause and rewind masterchef...from my childhood, I'd love to have chocablock and pigeon street available for my little ones

TwentiethCenturyGirl · 07/04/2013 13:29

I'm not a tester.

I'd love to be able to rewatch 'The Secret Life of Us'. It was an Australian drama that was on Ch4 about 10 years ago. I loved it but nobody else seemed to watch it, although I think it was a big hit in Oz.

It started off being shown at 10pm and gradually got pushed back later and later. Wish I'd been able to record it...

hairtwiddler · 07/04/2013 15:50

~ How long did it take you to understand how to use YouView?

Very little time at all. We were later than other testers using it as our first box was faulty, but picked it up really quickly. It's very intuitive to use.

~ Has your child/children used YouView? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?

Seven year old daughter is picking it up quickly. She's not had much chance to play with it yet but I don't think she'll have any bother. It's a bit beyond our three year old.

~ Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on YouView so far?

How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory. Kids have been enjoying playing with the Milkshake On Demand bit. Mostly Thomas and Fireman Sam. Saturday Night Takeaway. DH watched something while I was out, a documentary I think.

~ Which of the following services have you most enjoyed so far? Live TV/ on-demand/7 day catch up

We already had a humax box so were used to being able to pause live tv. The 7 day catch up is great and DH really likes that feature.

~ Who in your family has used your YouView box the most?

Probably me (telly addict!)

~ What have you found YouView most useful for so far?

Series record is a real winner for me. Our last box didn't have that feature and it is fantastic to know you won't miss anything because the box will record it for you.
