well I'm not doing this trial, but can I just say they just fucking cancelled my fucking order today and I'm not happy. Have sick children and am 27 weeks pregnant and I have no bloody food.

RickGhastley · 10/02/2012 14:30

I was one of the 10 MNetters who did the trial and here's my feedback:

Q1 What impression (if any) did you have of Tesco.com/groceries before you took part in this test? If you'd used the service before, how had you found it? If you hadn't tried it before, had you heard any feedback on it, either good or bad?

I use Tesco online to have my groceries delivered about 2 or 3 times a month. I find the website easy to use and navigate. The delivery aspect of the service varies: I have had several late deliveries with no call/text to explain, sometimes the driver will carry the bags up to my 1st floor flat, sometimes he wont etc. I get really annoyed with products being unavailable (10 items unavailable on a recent order) and products that are unavailable NOT being substituted - ie I recently ordered a 350g block of cheddar cheese which was unavailable and a substitute not given - are Tesco telling me that there was no cheddar cheese in the whole shop? Had to pop to the co-op to get some which negates the whole point of online shopping!

Q2 Now thinking about doing your test shop on Tesco.com/groceries, what were your initial impressions of how the site works? Did you find it easy to use or not? What did you like about it the most? And the least?

Really easy, once i type something into the search engine it always comes up with the right product. Easy to navigate. I like the fact you can see all special offers in one place and the link to recipes was inspiring. The thing I like least is the favourites tab... see below.

Q3 How did you find the 'favourites' tool to use? Did you find it useful or not? Do you think it saved you time using this tool or not? If so, roughly how much time do you think it saved? If you don't think it saved you any time, why not?

The favourites tab was not useful. I am not particularly brand loyal and like to vary the things we buy/eat so I currently have 581 favourites! I do not have the time to sort through or delete them. So the products are not actually "my favourites" - they are just the things I happen to have bought in the past. What would be better is to have to manually add items to my favourites when buying them, then that one off purchase would not appear in my favourites. "My usuals" was much more useful as there were only about 20 items and it was stuff I had bought most often. I did try to use my favourites it it took ages to trawl through eg there are 5 different types of apples in there!

Q4 If you've ever used any other online grocery delivery service, how does Tesco.com/groceries compare?

Never used anything else but planning on trying ocado as neighbour has recommended it.

Q5 If it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend Tesco.com/groceries to your friends? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, but only if they didn't like going to the supermarket or did not have time. TBH there are too many inconsistancies in delivery time, customer service and products (substitution related problems) for me to recommend it to someone who was happy with their existing supermarket.

Q6 Do you think you'll use Tesco.com/groceries again in future? If so, why? If not, why not? Would you say this experience will make you do more grocery shopping online rather than in store or not? Why?

Yes, am familiar with the site and like collecting points (payed for all DS Xmas presents last Xmas!)

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 10/02/2012 14:33

classic tesco thread - they never check the substitions list - we have had the exact same crap with toothbrushes. Some obscure items like certain spices are 'not available' but you know it's cos the picker can't be arsed to hunt for it. Have ordered Gala apples and been told there is 'no appropriate substitution available' Hmm no apples in a tesco superstore....

we've got so sick of this all that we tried Sainsbury's delivery this week. Great service, no subs but was much more expensive than Tesco so we'll have to go back to Mr tesco who has the nation by the knackers.

RickGhastley · 10/02/2012 16:43

Oh and I have to say that yesterday's delivery driver was charming - offered to carry the shopping up to my flat and to take away plastic bags- from any supermarket- for recycling. Is this recycling service new? It's never been offered before and is a perfect solution to my other Tesco bugbear- only 1 or 2 items packed in each bag!

And Tesco's ears must have been burning cos all my items arrived with no substitutions and in the correct amounts (I had specified 2 small steaks as 2 huge expensive steaks arrived last time). Well done Tesco!!!

mumatron · 10/02/2012 21:37

Q1 What impression (if any) did you have of Tesco.com/groceries before you took part in this test? If you'd used the service before, how had you found it? If you hadn't tried it before, had you heard any feedback on it, either good or bad?

Tbh I hadn't heard great things about tesco, especially wrt substitutions. It was part of the reason I had avoided online shopping.

Q2 Now thinking about doing your test shop on Tesco.com/groceries, what were your initial impressions of how the site works? Did you find it easy to use or not? What did you like about it the most? And the least?

I found the site really easy to use. I had a list of the things we needed and it was simple enough to find everything I needed. I wouldn't say I there was anything I really liked most. The only thing that annoyed me was if something was spelt wrong nothing comes up at all.

Q3 How did you find the 'favourites' tool to use? Did you find it useful or not? Do you think it saved you time using this tool or not? If so, roughly how much time do you think it saved? If you don't think it saved you any time, why not?

I put my clubcard number in and nothing came up for my favourites. Is that because I haven't shopped on line before?

Q4 If you've ever used any other online grocery delivery service, how does Tesco.com/groceries compare?

I've not used any online supermarkets.

Q5 If it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend Tesco.com/groceries to your friends? If so, why? If not, why not?

From what I have experienced so far yes I would, I found every thing we needed and got it delivered quickly with no fuss.

Q6 Do you think you'll use Tesco.com/groceries again in future? If so, why? If not, why not? Would you say this experience will make you do more grocery shopping online rather than in store or not? Why?

Yes I will definitely use Tesco again. Dd2 is going through a stage of screaming her way around the supermarket and being able to shop while wearing my pj's and drinking wine was definitely less stressful!

thanks again MN and Tesco.

grumpypants · 10/02/2012 21:46

Would it be possible to add some kind of 'no substitution' or 'substitue with' thing when adding an item to the trolley, rather than att the end?

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 11/02/2012 10:31

I am not part of the official testers but I use Tesco Online shopping each week.

A little feedback from me...

They have always arrived on time within the hour slot I have been notified of.

Every time, apart from once, the driver has carried my shopping upstairs (first floor flat) and into my kitchen. And once when I was feeding the baby the driver even put my milk into my fridge for me :)

I have only had an issue once. I always specify on my order that I am a first floor flat but one driver refused to carry my shopping upstairs due to "health and safety". He stood outside the front door and watched me do 8 trips up and down my stairs whilst my baby screamed upstairs. I emailed a complaint and I received a personal phone call from customer service apologising and I also was refunded my delivery charge and given compensation.

Re substitutions, you can specify whether the picker should or shouldn't substitute your item in the 'view whole basket' section before completing your order. I always have no substitutions on important things like nappies, wipes etc.

I find the website easy to use, I don't use the favourites section, I just go off my saved list that I typed in, then I can just pick and choose what I want to search for. I like the missed promotion thing that pops up and I like the special offers tab that lets you narrow down the search results to just whats on offer. Definitely save some money doing it that way.

I used sainsburys once before trying Tesco and wasn't overly impressed. Veg had a rubbish shelf life and half my order was missing. My SiL has just had major issues with sainsburys and is now going to try Tesco after my recommendation. Sainsurys delivery charges are cheaper but the service, for me, wasn't on par with Tesco.

mumatron · 11/02/2012 13:49

Just wanted to add, that my delivery driver was fab, he carried the crates into the kitchen and helped me unload, even though I had requested no bags and it took ages.

We also had no subs which was something I was worried about and the meat I ordered was well within date. I've lots of stories about the crappiest bit of meat being picked. Dp is very fussy with meat so that was a big bonus for us.

TescoMysteryShopper · 11/02/2012 15:03

Q1 What impression (if any) did you have of Tesco.com/groceries before you took part in this test? If you'd used the service before, how had you found it? If you hadn't tried it before, had you heard any feedback on it, either good or bad?

I've used the service before, and previously found it quite good. I'm quite a fussy fresh meat and fruit and veg shopper, and I've previously had stuff that's gone off in a couple of days, bruised fruit, bashed in peppers etc, so I've got out of the habit of shopping online, but I do find it useful, since I'm now working an extra day a week.

Q2 Now thinking about doing your test shop on Tesco.com/groceries, what were your initial impressions of how the site works? Did you find it easy to use or not? What did you like about it the most? And the least?

The site is very easy to use. Even if I hadn't used it before, I think I would find it easy to set up a first order. Having used it before, it was very easy to return. The thing I particularly like, and the thing that drives me mad in store, is the way that it is so easy to compare like for like produce, ie Heinz Beans in tins x 6, versus Heinz Beans in SnapPots (cost per kg). I spend ages in store trying not to be conned by "Buy 3 for £10", and then finding that buying separately I am actually paying less per kg for a product (fresh chicken breasts for example). This saves me more money, and is the primary reason for my shopping habits, and why I have bought at least half of my monthly shop at Aldi for the last twelve months or so.

I'll be honest though, I'm always wary of sell by dates. I'm a careful shopper (have I mentioned this Grin?) - and will always search for the freshest and most in date produce. I would like to be reassured that this happens by the pickers, but I can vouch for the fact that it doesn't happen in my local store, as I have seen them just grab the first packet to hand, whether or not it is the freshest.

The other thing which is slightly annoying/frustrating, is that I'm assuming that my shopping is picked from one of two stores near to my house. Now I know for a fact that certain specialist produces (gluten free crumpets, for example) are stocked in both these stores, yet are not available for me to purchase online. I'd be really interested to know why, as I live in a big city, and both branches are sizeable and carry most lines.

So I could never do 100% of my shop online, as I would always have to make a trip to a store to fill in the gaps. I'd be genuinely interested to have this answered by Tesco if that's possible.

Q3 How did you find the 'favourites' tool to use? Did you find it useful or not? Do you think it saved you time using this tool or not? If so, roughly how much time do you think it saved? If you don't think it saved you any time, why not?

The "favourites" tool is a good one. I do think it saves time, particularly if you do get into the habit of shopping online every week, there are many "staples" that you just buy without much thought, as you know you will need them. This is a useful memory jogger too.

Q4 If you've ever used any other online grocery delivery service, how does Tesco.com/groceries compare?

I never have used another grocery delivery service so I can't compare.

Q5 If it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend Tesco.com/groceries to your friends? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, I would recommend Tesco.com/groceries to others, and in fact have done so in the past.

Q6 Do you think you'll use Tesco.com/groceries again in future? If so, why? If not, why not? Would you say this experience will make you do more grocery shopping online rather than in store or not? Why?

I was very pleased to be given this opportunity for a trial shop - and it has probably done what you expected it to - reminded me why I found it so useful in the past! Despite my comments upthread, I realise this exercise is solely to test the delivery service, which I found impeccable. The only slight potential problem, was that I was texted to say my shopping would arrive between 4.15pm and 5.15pm.

I was stuck in a traffic jam, and arrived home at 1 minute to four, followed closely on my heels by the delivery man! I wonder what would have happened if I had arrived home by 4.15pm and he'd arrived at 4pm.

Also, there were three replacements in my shopping, which were replacements for a handwash dispenser and were unique to the product. I was told these were out of stock, and had been replaced by a normal handwash dispenser - which were no use to me. Unfortunately, these are quite expensive items and, by removing them from my order, I ended up going under my £50 shop, and ended up paying more for my shopping than I had thought, because I was unable to use one of my £10 vouchers. However, DH has cautioned me against looking a gift horse in the mouth, so I will simply say thank you again for being able to participate in the exercise.

Will I continue to do all of my shopping online in future? Probably not, for the reasons outlined above, but it did remind me what a good service I have received, both yesterday and in previous deliveries. So thank you.

Crikey - this is a long post isn't it? But I wanted to be comprehensive, and fair. You can gloss over the boring bits. Grin

Lotstodo · 13/02/2012 08:53

I have tried all the supermarket home deliveries and I think your shopping and delivery satisfaction depends on stock levels, staff availability and competence, breakdowns and weather and traffic conditions. I think the customer service depends on who you speak to as well as I have received similar service from all of them if my shopping is late or has many missing items or strange substitutions.

grumpypants · 13/02/2012 09:21

That may be true, but certain differences make the experience better or worse. For example, the favourites cuts down on time, but I git sidetracked deleting things that I had bought once. Now i know about the usuals list I shall def try that next time.

I think it is worth tesco looking at the procedure when a cc is refused/ customer wants to change card post order. my experiences were fairly tortuous with this.

AlwaysTimeForWine · 13/02/2012 17:12

Not an official tester but thought I would feedback as well.

I've used Tesco online for nearly 7 years. I did stop using it for a while as it went downhill but it's been better recently.

The website is very easy to use and I nearly always get the shopping I want, delivered when I want it, however, some feedback that would make it better;

It would be better if the running total was at the top of your basket contents on the left, not at the bottom.

Searches are rather odd - the kiwi one happens to me all the time. If I search for kiwi - I don't expect shoe polish to be the first thing that comes up.
I would also prefer for my favourites to come up first when I have searched for something.

I NEVER use the favourites bit as it is pointless and would never save time for me - as I have been using tesco online for nearly 7 years, and shopped before then in-store for 4 years, my favourites is FULL. And if you think I can be arsed to clear it out then think again!! I would prefer it to show the items that I have bought most over the last year, or bought in the last 6 months.

I would like your pricing per item to be more consistent. Make sure you price everything per kg/ml so it makes it very easy for us to compare prices. Don't put offers up that are taking the piss; ie; the item costs £1.40 or you can buy 2 for £3.50 - I mean, seriously?!?!

You also need better item descriptions on EVERYTHING. I want to know what is in it, I want a description of what it is, and I want to be able to zoom in on the picture so I can check it's the product I really want.

Your substitutions can be really random - I ordered frozen spinach and you delivered frozen green beans. NO! Give me fresh spinach instead. And don't not deliver my nappies when I am sure you have size 5 in a different brand. Substitutions would be better if they chose a similar product - I am not brand-loyal, I just want a product that suits my needs. So getting white warburtons instead of wholemeal warburtons will NOT do the job, but wholemeal hovis would be just fine!

Your stock listed online needs to accurately reflect the stock you have in the shop/warehouse. I am sure that you have very sophisticated stock software - please use it. There is nothing more frustrating to order something online at 11pm, for a delivery at 11am the next day and for it not to be available. Either your stock control is rubbish or your pickers are crap.

Your delivery charge can be pretty steep at £6. Please offer 1 hourly slots. I do however like the text giving me the window for my delivery as I can then plan my day better.

Your drivers are always really helpful, and very considerate and always carry my shopping into the house, last week the driver even wheeled my shopping down my icy road so as not to get his van stuck - very impressed!

Sorry for the length - I have lots of ideas having used it so long!!

grumpypants · 13/02/2012 18:12

More feedback! Just done another shop to see how it went using My Usuals. Unfortunately these are quite slim - would be interesting to know how these are selected as 'usuals'.

Really would like to know if something on the website layout could ba changed? The running total has to be scrolled down to once the trlley starts getting full. What would be fab would be a top right hand corner running total so I could keep an eye on it.

Also, there is no point in having special offers on the day you shop if they run out the next day - ie booked a delivery for tomorrow, but offers were shown that ran out today.

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts · 13/02/2012 20:05

this week my bread was squashed by a bottle of water and totally split in half :(

typical that when i come here and give them a lovely review they mess it up for themselves!
