Not part of the test - the crazy substitutions and delivery issues is the reason I gave up on Tesco delivery a long time ago - but very useful to see that the issues are still there years later without having to try it out myself.

nextphase · 08/02/2012 10:19

Also not part of the test.
Tesco - we can't register our clubcard with you for ANY online shopping, because it is attached to a tesco credit card. Please can you sort this out - we're loyal to you (shopping, petrol, car insurance and credit card) and we can't use the clubcard on line!

thrashtheNORTHERNMONKEYsqueers · 08/02/2012 10:28

Another one not part of the test, but TESCO sounds like its the same as ever!
This is also why I gave up on them. As a delivery service, they are useless

Bonkerz · 08/02/2012 10:30

UPDATE. Just had a call from a lovely exec at tesco. Very understanding and apologetic. System showed store did not notify of breakdown till 9:45pm so failure at store level led to all my stress! Compensation agreed so i am calmer about it all.

I will be holding back for a while before ordering again. It really does put me off as my life is already stressful enough and sometimes popping to morrissons (our local store) seems a lot easier even with a screaming teething baby Sad!

Thanks again tesco for the experience. I hope I have helped with the feedback. Does seem odd that so far 2 out of 10 have had issues Sad

thrashtheNORTHERNMONKEYsqueers · 08/02/2012 10:36

Bonkers i saw on your AIBU thread that you were given a voucher as compensation?
Just be warned I have personally been given £40's worth because of tesco's fuck ups mistakes, and not one of them have worked!!!!

Q1 What impression (if any) did you have of Tesco.com/groceries before you took part in this test? If you'd used the service before, how had you found it? If you hadn't tried it before, had you heard any feedback on it, either good or bad?

I have used Tesco online many times. I use other supermarkets too. I rate them better than Sainsburys, but not as good as Ocado. I have a delivery coming today in the 2-4 slot and have been advised by text that it will arrive between 3-4. In the past they have been punctual .... most of the time. Only had one order that didn't turn up in the past and that was due to snow and I had to ring them to find out where it was after waiting several hours - they told me I could drive to them to collect it?! Agree that communication is not great. Ocado is much better at letting me know if they are running late and any general problems.

Q2 Now thinking about doing your test shop on Tesco.com/groceries, what were your initial impressions of how the site works? Did you find it easy to use or not? What did you like about it the most? And the least?

Site is easy to navigate. I like being able to search by offers, using favourites list etc.. I have found in the evenings that it can load very slowly and I get a lot of error messages and have to add an item again. I realise this is probably their busiest time, but it is frustrating when it moves so slowly. A couple of times I haven't been able to get on to the groceries page to edit my order because it was so busy. This is not a problem with my internet provision as I have checked on other sites and the speed is fine. I have never noticed this problem with Sainsburys or Ocado. So evening speed is my biggest complaint.

Q3 How did you find the 'favourites' tool to use? Did you find it useful or not? Do you think it saved you time using this tool or not? If so, roughly how much time do you think it saved? If you don't think it saved you any time, why not?

I use the favourites tool for my regular purchases - yes it saves time, but probably only a few minutes as I like to scan the offers. Quite frequently I buy what's on offer rather then a regular specific item. Very straightforward to use.

Q4 If you've ever used any other online grocery delivery service, how does Tesco.com/groceries compare?

Slightly answered this already - Tesco comes after Ocado and before Sainsburys for me. I like the fact that if I buy an item on a multibuy offer and the third item is not available I get a different item, but still get the offer. With Sainsburys & Ocado you just don't get the offer. Communication between driver, store and Tesco.com could be improved - as explained with my snow delivery. I have found most of the drivers to be friendly and helpful.
I am slightly put off sometimes by the 2 hour delivery slot, Sains & Ocado offer 1 hour slots and if I haven't got much time I will opt for these stores as i know when it will arrive.

Q5 If it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend Tesco.com/groceries to your friends? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes I'd recommend Tesco to friends. Easy to use, can do my shopping for the week with a cup of coffee! Most of the items I order - very rare that I get a substitution which is completely wrong and still qualify for an offer, unlike Sains & Ocado.

Q6 Do you think you'll use Tesco.com/groceries again in future? If so, why? If not, why not? Would you say this experience will make you do more grocery shopping online rather than in store or not? Why?

Yes I'll use them again...assuming my delivery later is not a disaster! Have been very happy with the service in the past. I do most of my grocery shopping online anyway, as I don't drive, so this experience will not make any difference to that.

Thanks for the vouchers to do this test!

BettyBedlam · 08/02/2012 12:54

Bonkers 'Does seem odd that so far 2 out of 10 have had issues' - no, not odd, just representative! I can assure you, the whole 'compensation' thing is fine the first or second time, but when you are trying to lead a busy life and they keep letting you down, the novelty wears thin!

swallowedAfly · 08/02/2012 15:04

not one of the testers but thought i'd add that i use tesco.com and find it great. i have tried alternatives and they made such cock ups i just went back to tesco (tried others when offers of ten pound off first order etc).

love the favourites tool - times saving and good reminder. as long as you book in advance and pick a quiet slot delivery is reasonably priced and i like that they text you on the day to narrow down the time slot.

i've only had a very rare insane substitution - mostly it makes sense.

grumpypants · 08/02/2012 17:07

Compensation!!!!! I just got the delivery charge refunded - you've started something now Grin

TheOtherHelenMumsnet · 08/02/2012 17:14

Thanks for all of your comments so far - Tesco would like to respond to a couple of points raised - here's their message:

Q from DramainPyjamas: "Substitutions - is there some way that you can choose what your substituted item would be? ie; a 2nd choice tool (maybe there is and I didn't see it)"

A from Tesco: "You can write a note to your personal shopper when you place your order detailing your preferred substitution ? just add the note before you check out in ?View full basket?. We can?t guarantee that you will get that item but your personal shopper will do their best."

Q from DramainPyjamas: "Visa Electron card- why are these not acccepted? This is the only card I have so I had to borrow my husbands to register payment details"

A from Tesco: "Unfortunately our systems are unable to accept Visa Electron but we can accept most other cards."

pigsinmud · 08/02/2012 18:57

Just to update. All perfect for my delivery. Friendly driver. Everything present and correct. One substitution - 2 smaller boxes instead of large - absolutely fine. Arrived within the hour they said they would.

One quibble - I have large orders and always ask for it to be packed in bags and then recycle the bags next time. Most times only half of it is in bags and it is a bit of a faff taking individual items out of the crates.

grumpypants · 08/02/2012 20:11

I thbink, upon reflection, that my feedback summary would be:

very easy to use website - I had already worked out how to delete favourites/ request certain substitutes etc. Very good choice of delivery time, and very nice to get a text stating which part of the two hours you could expect your shopping.

However, although when things went smoothly it was brilliant, it was the ability to deal with a hiccup that concerns me - ie when I rang to say I knew I'd put the wrong card in, it wasn't easily resolved, and was very stressful on a work day.

But, due to the choice and ease, I will not be writing Tesco off in terms of future use.

DramaInPyjamas · 08/02/2012 20:25

Thanks for getting answers to my questions Helen.

Petrean · 08/02/2012 21:44

Thanks grumpypants... I use the iPhone app and the delete isn't there... But it's as clear as day on the laptop thank you a my 9 pages is now 4! Next question Mr Tesco... Can we have an iPad app please!!!!

Blatherskite · 09/02/2012 14:07

Q1 What impression (if any) did you have of Tesco.com/groceries before you took part in this test? If you'd used the service before, how had you found it? If you hadn't tried it before, had you heard any feedback on it, either good or bad?

I've been using Tesco.com for a long time - ever since morning sickness with my now almost 5 year old DS stopped me being able to go into the store in fact! DH used them a lot before we moved in together too. I've always found the service to be very reliable. Deliveries are very rarely late, very, very rarely cancelled and the substitutions are usually sensible. Any issues are generally dealt with very effectively by the driver or by a quick all to the helpline. My only issue has been that the staff at our local store don't seem to read the notes I sometimes leave for items and I've had pink toothbrushes delivered when I'd specifically asked for a pirate one etc... I don't bother any more and just take my chances. I've complained before and it's never done any good. I do like that I can have things delivered without bags too and that the drivers will take spare bags away.

Q2 Now thinking about doing your test shop on Tesco.com/groceries, what were your initial impressions of how the site works? Did you find it easy to use or not? What did you like about it the most? And the least?

Obviously, I'm very familiar with the website and therefore found it very easy to use. I sometimes do a price comparison using mysupermarket.com but for our family shop, Tesco wins out 99% of the time so I tend to go straight to the Tesco site most of the time. I like the search facility - although I wish my favourites came up at the top of a search and I wish there was some way of sorting the lists by price or weight as sometimes I'm just looking for the cheapest price per weight and sometimes, if for example I'm trying out a new recipe, I only want a small amount of the item and am looking for the smallest jar/tin/pack available. I also like the Special Offers tab and occasionally the recipes tab

Q3 How did you find the 'favourites' tool to use? Did you find it useful or not? Do you think it saved you time using this tool or not? If so, roughly how much time do you think it saved? If you don't think it saved you any time, why not?

I don't like the favourites tool. I've used it in the past but find that it takes longer and I end up spending more. I tend to decide what I'm cooking for the week and then go to Tesco.com to get the ingredients - especially at the moment as I am on a diet and trying out lots of new recipes - If I search through my favourites, I end up a) spending ages going through everything I've bought previously before I find the thing I want, even if I've used "my usuals" and b) spending more money as I spot things we liked before as I scan through. It's the online equivalent of an impulse buy - all those bits you spot and drop in your trolley as you wander round. I always worry too that I'm picking up the item I always get and perhaps not the cheapest or best on offer as I can only see the one's I usually buy. What I'd much rather is if my favourites came up at the top of a search so for example, when I search for the children's cereal, our favourites came at the top of the first page instead of halfway down the second. This would save me time and allow me to quickly see the other, similar items which are perhaps on offer.

Q4 If you've ever used any other online grocery delivery service, how does Tesco.com/groceries compare?

I've never tried another service. My MIL and SILs are always raving about Ocado but whenever I've checked, it's always been so much more than Tesco that I've not wanted to waste the money. I've heard so many horror stories on here too that I tend to stick with the devil we know.

Q5 If it came up in conversation, do you think you'd recommend Tesco.com/groceries to your friends? If so, why? If not, why not?

To be honest, most of my friends already use Tesco.com so apart from the occasional gripe about weird substitutions, it never really comes up. I have had the odd argument discussion about it on here though and have always stood up for Tesco as I've never had any major problems even in bad weather.

Q6 Do you think you'll use Tesco.com/groceries again in future? If so, why? If not, why not? Would you say this experience will make you do more grocery shopping online rather than in store or not? Why?

I will shop online with Tesco again. I was getting very annoyed with it all and frustrated with the limited choice in comparison to in store so I had been going to the shop myself more often but I've noticed with this shop that more and more of the counter products are now available online which is a massive boost for me. I've been able to buy smaller/larger amounts of some fish and cheese for a recipe I want to try when previously, I'd have been stuck with the standard pack size from which the excess which would have potentially been wasted. If there was an option to list search results by pack size or price per weight, I'd be even happier. I'll still probably shop both instore and online

One last thing - I've always wished that the photos attached to some products had a 'zoom in' function. When DD was tiny and I was buying nappies, it was really frustrating to have to go to the nappy manufacturers website to find out what weight size x nappies were for because Tesco.com only listed the nappies as size 2 for example and didn't say anywhere what weights size 2 covered. If I'd have been able to zoom in the photo, I'd at least have been able to read the information from the front of the pack. I was a second time Mum at the time so had a good idea of what I was looking for so I'm sure lots of new parents will have struggled with that too. Same goes for 'special edition' foods. We had some burgers last year that I'd picked up in store because they sounded so nice in the blurb on the front of the pack, but when i went to buy some more online, I couldn't read the text on the pack so couldn't be sure they were the same ones when the online description only said 'special edition'.

Blatherskite · 09/02/2012 14:08

Wow, I wrote loads! Hope some of it is helpful

TheOtherHelenMumsnet · 09/02/2012 17:15

Thanks again for all the feedback so far, including all of you who aren't 'official' testers! Tesco have asked us to post this message for them in response to some of your queries:

Re: Petrean's query about editing favourites - "'My Usuals' contains a subset of your Favourites - 'My Usuals' is available after your second online shop and contains a list of up to 50 items that you buy most regularly. You can find 'My Usuals' by going to 'Favourites' and clicking on 'My Usuals' at the top."

Re: NextPhase's comment - "Sorry to hear you're unable to register your card. This shouldn?t be a problem - please contact our customers service team on 08475 22 55 33 and they will be able to advise you on how to register your card."

Ok so I've just received my delivery and I have to say I was very impressed! A very nice driver arrived slap bang in the middle of the allotted time slot, there were a few substitutions all of which were perfectly sensible and good swaps for the original product (ones I would have chosen myself) and I love the fact that you don't pay any extra for substitutions that are of greater value than the original. All the produce was fresh and well within date and I was very pleased! After that experience I would certainly consider using Tesco on a moe regular basis- well done Tesco!

jimswifein1964 · 09/02/2012 22:42

Not an official tester, but... used to use tesco a lot, but they've really gone down hilll.
WHEN I SPEND HUGE AMOUNTS CALLING BY MOBILE BECAUSE TESCOS HAS FUCKED UP, AN E-VOUCHER IS NOT VALID COMPENSATION. HOW WILL THAT PAY MY PHONE BILL? Angry

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 09/02/2012 23:49

Good service IME

A couple of issues over the years with non delivery due to bad weather (understandable) and credit card issue (Tesco at fault, badly handled at store) but these are exceptions.

Love the Android app ... can shop so quickly now.

Have noticed new email offers.

cece · 10/02/2012 00:03

I am generally happy with Tesco delivery although I do have issues with the quantities/size of items that I order.

For instance, recently I have ordered/recieved;

steaks ordered to value of £6, recieved steak to cost of £2.50 - which was miles too small to feed two people Hmm

so the following week

I order 2 steaks to value of approx £3 each. I recieve two steaks with a value of £11 Shock Far too expensive for one meal!

Also bananas;

Ordered 6 individual bananas and I double checked I had clicked items not weight. Recieved 6 kg of bananas! Hmm Shock

Then this week I ordered

Grapes. I ordered weight of approx 0.6kg. I recieved nearly 0.9kg of grapes! Too many to eat and much more money than I wanted to spend on grapes!

Sort out the weight of items please.

grumpypants · 10/02/2012 10:03

This Tesco test is really getting quite amusing - I have just received five replacement evouchers in lace of the cancelled ones! Obviously I am not going to use them, as I did receive a £50 discount on my order (I paid something like £60) - have emailed Gemma to let her know just in case anyone else has received them - sorry!

Blatherskite · 10/02/2012 10:49

I had another delivery this morning. I had decided to give Tesco.com another chance with the notes thing and ordered a toothbrush for each of the children. DD isn't bothered what colour her "turtle" toothbrush is so I left no notes but DS at almost 5, is very bothered all of a sudden about whether he gets a black and white Pirate brush or a bright pink Mermaid brush so as it's one listing with two options, I put one in my basket and left notes requesting a pirate brush.

Once again, we got the pink one and I had to send it back!

This happens pretty much every time I order this item.

The worst bit is, I mentioned this to my driver and he said he wasn't surprised as it happens all the time.

I had a couple of substitutions which were sensible and accepted but it's silly things like this which mean I would hesitate before trusting Tesco.com to do an important pre dinner party or pre Christmas shop for me.

grumpypants · 10/02/2012 11:16

I would second the weight of things, particularly meat. DH is the only meat eater and so I order tiny amounts (steak, joints) and have had really large sizes. maybe I need to use the notes for this?

Thanks to Gemma who is looking into my flurry of vouchers.
