This thread is for the members of the MN research panel who have taken part in the school uniform test for Trutex. Thank you for taking part - please add your feedback once your child has worn the garments and when you have washed them at least once. Each tester was able to select a shirt/blouse, a jumper/cardigan and a skirt/shorts or trousers in the colour of their choice.

Below are some questions to get you started but please feel free to add other comments too. Everyone who adds their feedback on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will get a £200 John Lewis voucher.

Please state the age and gender of your child in replying and if possible the item(s) you're referring to.

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?
Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?
Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?
Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?
Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?
Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?
Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?

Thanks

dd1 is 4, we tested the skirt and blouses.

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?
Is that really grey? I found the colour of the skirt really dark. Nice heavy material and good cut on the skirt. Blouses seemed more generic
Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?
Sizes seemed reasonably true. I would have preferred the grey skirt to have been more distinctively grey, rather than "off-black".
Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?
Likes the flippy cut of the skirt, and the little cherries detail. Blouses were not noticeably different from those she has.
Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?
Yes - better quality than the supermarket stuff I normally buy.
Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?
Fine - no better or worse than usual TBH.
Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?
Possibly - I really liked the cut of the skirt but would have preferred a paler grey.
Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children? Yes, in terms of the good cut and washability.

Tortoise · 18/07/2011 20:47

Girl age 8. Trousers, shirts and cardigan.

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?
I thought it all looked good quality when they arrived. Trousers were good fit. Nice and soft and stretchy which was good for slightly chubby DD1!

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?
All was good fit. About right for size.

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?
DD1 loved the cherry on the trousers and said they were very comfortable. She would have liked more girly shape to the shirt. She said it looked like a boys shirt.

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?
Not overly impressed with the quality since it's been worn and washed. The shirts are good quality though

Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?
The trousers and cardigan and not bearing up well! The trousers have gone very bobbly especially on the bum! The cardigan has also bobbled badly and looks like she has had it for months!

Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?
Depends on price. Maybe shirts i would but not trousers or cardigan.

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?
Probably not.

Thank you for the free uniform and thank you to Daniel from Trutex for chasing up city link over and over again while they kept trying to deliver to the wrong address!

treedelivery · 18/07/2011 21:07

Tested on DD, age 6, average height and skinny.

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?

I liked the feel of the cardigan but worried the cherry skirt felt thin. Then I considered this might be a positive as I find uniforms bulky and cumbersome on little ones

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?

The skirt was a little tight on the waist and has no adjustable waist.

The blouse was odd - the sleeves were huge and wide. The chest too cumbersome and the main problem was the mega stiff collar that barely fit under her chin. She wasn't comfortable in it, it seemed the collar was designed for the shirt of a 12 year old. Question to Trutex - are the collars to scale or all the same size?
I found the material stiff, but then we are used to polo shirts.
The cargdigan was a little too long to be considered 'on trend'. Doesn't worry me or dd but it might in a few years. Other brands have little details at the sleeve or a shorter cut, this cardi was very standard which might be a downside to some.

Overall I do think the items could have a little more shape. The shirt could have been cut to a more fitted shape, it is so bulky. The cardigan is too long. The skirt is a nice shape though, trim and tidy.

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?

She loves the cardigan as she says it is snug and cosy. She said the shirt was trying to strangle her and wouldn't fit under the cardi which made putting the cardi on tricky. She has no opinion on the skirt.

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?

I think the shirts are about standard, sadly the quest for a comfortable formal blouse goes on. Cardigan is great, washes well and springs back into shape. Not sure about the skirt - it could do with a pocket and the cherry detail is lost under the cardigan. Could this be picked out with more detail?

Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?

Well! Cardigan in particular seems to keep it's shape, although I do find the ribbinbg a little excessive.

Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?

Hmmm. It would depend on the cost. The supermarkets are so well priced, Trutex would need to be in that range. I would spend more for the cardigan (if it were a little shorter)

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?

Yes. The items are washing well. A lot would depend in the shape of the child though, and I am not convined a style aware older primary age child would pass up a detailed shirt/cardi with embroidery or puff sleves etc for the plain traditional cut of Trutex.

HoneyNorwegianRidgebackdragon · 18/07/2011 21:30

Boy age 8

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?

That the trousers were too long, and I didn't like the fastening. That the material of both the shirts and trousers (no jumper Trutex don't do green) was good quality.

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments?
How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?

Was actually very impressed by the trousers cut, although they were too long they adjusted well to the waist and were very easy to take up, and stayed hanging nicely. I followed the height guidelines, I think improvements could be providing an inside leg measurement.Ds is average sized so not sure whether going a size down would fit his waist or not Tbh I didn't find the shirts any different to cheaper supermarket ones we have used. They washed well.

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?

DS said he'd not object to the shirts for winter but found them heavy, particularly the cuffs. He loved the trousers though, said they were much softer and more comfortable than his others (currently M&S and BHS.) And Ds is fussy about trousers so this is a BIG deal. Grin

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?
Impressed with the quality of the trousers material and cut, stitching could be better. Although tbf don't mind having to sew up seems if the material isn't going to wear through.

Shirts were pretty much the same as the cheaper ones we buy.
Was impressed by the sizing. Ds is average sized so not sure whether going a size down would fit his waist or not.

Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?

Both holding up well, shirts haven't been worn too much as they are too warm at present.

Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?

If it was reasonable and competitive, bearing in mind most high street stores have multi buy offers I'd consider it.

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?

The trousers definitely.

androbbob · 18/07/2011 22:28

Boy aged 4 - tested shirt, trousers and jumper

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?

We were impressed - trousers were thick and hung well. Jumper was a good size. DS not too impressed with the shirt as he wears a polo shirt for nursery. Nothing to dislike!

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?

Jumper was good shape - used to buy M&S as only place to get burgandy which is school colour, but they changed style. Sizes were great - trousers a little long but DS is shorter than average. Fitted round the waist well. Shirt was a liitle large for him.

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform? DS was happy and even his sister liked it and wanted some for herself! (9 years)

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?

Usually buy M&S as good quality and wash well but was more impressed with these items. If I can buy them on-line for a similar price I would do so.

Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?

Jumper is looking as good as new - even worn it with jeans outside of school! Trousers have been useful in this colder summer weather. I am confident that I would get a good few terms out of this rather than the usual needing new stuff 3 times a year.

Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again? - Yes if price is comparable and able to buy online easily

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children? - yes definately

thehairybabysmum · 19/07/2011 08:48

Im not a tester but can i add that i bought some trutex red poloshirts for ds1 aged 5 last september, they are still all as new, no bobbing or fading. Very good quality and excellent value for money!!

Oops, I forgot age and gender too Blush

9 year old boy Smile

loler · 19/07/2011 09:54

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?
I couldn't believe the size of the box and thought I was very lucky to have been picked! I thought the uniform looked good quality, the fabrics (although a bit manmade) seemed thick and looked like they would last. There was attention to detail that you wouldn't get with cheaper versions

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?
The sizes are very generous (my children are pretty chunky and the uniform comes up big on them). The only improvement I can think of is that the top button of the shirt is tricky to do up (DS has to ask me to do it - I guess that he'll grow out of trying to do it as he gets older!)

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?
DS loves the cotton V neck jumper - he says it's too nice for school and has been wearing it at the weekend instead!
He likes the trousers having an elasticated waist as well as the fastening - most school trousers don't seem to have an elasticated waist over the age of 6ish.

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?
The cotton jumper is really good quality - it feels much better than the normal school jumpers. The trousers seem thicker than others I've bought, they haven't gone through on the knees......yet.

Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?
I was disappointed that the shirt still needs to be ironed - I'm still on the hunt for the ultimate non-iron non-iron shirt! NB - my standards are very low on the ironing front but can't get away without ironing at least the front of the shirt and I've tried line drying and tumble drying (removing quickly and shaking!). The trousers wash very well - they still look brand new.

Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?
Probably - although there are only a few local stockists - I'm very lazy and don't tend to go out of my way to buy uniform!

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?
Yes - trousers in particular

loler · 19/07/2011 10:54

Boy aged 6 (although his sister aged 8 has borrowed the shirts on the days I've been slack with the washing - she had the stiff top button issue too - I think it's because the collar itself is very stiff)

LowRegNumber · 19/07/2011 11:06

Boy age 9 :)
Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?
Seemed good quality although the smell from the trousers was very strong! The jumper was quite thin, fine for spring but wouldn't take him through winter.
Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child? The fit was great the sizes were just right for my son, the trousers had plenty of length so they could be adjusted for smaller children and would have the length for a smaller child.
Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform? My son liked the shirt and trousers but didn't like the jumper as he prefers the sweatshirt type.
Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not? I did find the quality better than our usual George purchases!
Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life? THe trousers and shirt have stood up very well to use and washing.
Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again? I will probably stick to trutex for trousers, they are great for boys who like to put the knees through!
Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children? I would certainly mention the trousers and shirts not so sure about the jumper as I felt I would prefer a shweatshirt.

janeyjampot · 19/07/2011 12:57

DD is 13

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?
I loved the quality of the trousers and the black cotton jumper. They were noticeably better in quality than others we have had. The blouses are more like others we have had before.

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?
I ordered the wrong size Blush so the trousers didn't fit at all. Many thanks to everyone who found her some that did fit so quickly!

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?
She very much likes the trousers, which I am pleased about because it's always proved extremely difficult to find school uniform that she will wear.
She can't actually wear the jumper for school as it doesn't have the school logo on it, but she wears it at home with jeans voluntarily - I think this is a huge endorsement from a 13 year old!

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?
The trousers and jumper are definitely better quality than the supermarket/M&S ones we have had before.

Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?
The trousers and jumper have been washed a number of times and still look new. We haven't had a chance to try the blouses because they are part of winter uniform at DD's school - they wear a different, short-sleeved top in summer.

Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?
Definitely, if I knew where to find it. With DDs at secondary school I find they need less uniform than at primary (they don't get as dirty and they are better at covering up for messy lessons) but they are much fussier about the look and feel of it. For this reason I'd be much more inclined to buy it if they could try it on.

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?
Yes, definitely. I have shown a friend the uniform we received and she was impressed by the quality, especially of the trousers and jumper, which we agreed we would wear if we had to!

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?

I thought it was very smart and well-cut. DS thought it was smart and comfortable and wore it out of choice whenever he could. In fact, he loved it.

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?

It was a very good fit, which surprised me as normally things pinch a bit around DS's waist even though he is not overweight (it's just the shape he is).

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?

Loves it, prefers it to his 'real' school uniform.

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?

Definitely. For example my older son has to have an expensive bespoke uniform for his secondary school and it is poorer quality than this. I was very impressed.

Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?

It looks like new even though we have road tested it playing outside, in
bad weather and so on. Jumper is possibly fading ever-so-slightly on the neck seam and cuffs, but that is a characteristic of cotton jumpers, I think. No shrinkage or stretching.

Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?

Yes, definitely. I would also buy things like this for weekend wear - I like smart tough clothes that can be handed down.

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?

Definitely.

SeniorWrangler · 19/07/2011 17:09

Sorry - I have an age 10 boy.
Could Trutex bring out a smart mufti range please? This is probably the most excited I have been about children's clothes for about 10 years since the ripped skater look came in.

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?
I was very impressed with the initial look and feel of the uniform.
Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your For my child the sizing was a little too big.
Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?
She liked the jumper and shirts, the skirt she would have preferred pleated, trousers she can only wear in the winter.
Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?
I thought the quality was very good, similar to m&s,better than tescos/asda.
Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?
Skirt and jumper really good so far,but shirts need a lot of ironing .

Much much better quality.

I added my feedback yesterday and my post disappeared Angry Anyway...

Boy aged 13. tested trousers, jumper and shirts.

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?

Immediate first impressions were that the trousers appeared thicker than our usual supermarket brand ones, which seemed paper thin in direct comparison. This is something I hadn't noticed before because I had nothing to compare to. The shirts looked a decent size, as I am finding my DS is on the cusp of fitting clothes made for children and fitting clothes for young men (waaah!) The jumper was lovely, felt soft and natural - some jumpers can feel nylony and 'plasticky' this one didn't.

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?

As already mentioned, DS is 13 and is a funny shape. He is slim, not very tall but becoming broad with long limbs. I didn't know whether to go for the largest size aimed at children, which was 13, or order trousers like men do with waist measurements. As trousers tend to be on the long size I ordered the children's aged 13. They fitted round the waist perfectly and although were a tiny touch long they were fine on with shoes. Shirts again, they fit well.

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?

DS really liked the uniform and made mention of the seams, labels and stitching. DS has quite severe eczema which is easily aggravated. He noticed the shirts especially were good to wear as nothing irritated him like labels or seams. He felt the trousers fit well as he feels supermarket trousers too small now.

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?

Yes definitley. Now we have had the opportunity to compare, some supermarket stuff seems laughable now. Especially the trousers, the trousers were all round better quality and fit and made supermarket ones look like paper.

Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?

DS wore his everyday since we got them with washing and tumble drying and some line drying. I noticed the shirts stayed whiter longer than our previous supermarket ones, which seemed to go grey and shrink after a few washes. I would buy packets and packets of new shirts, which I now see as a false economy. The trousers hems stayed intact which are normally the first to go. The jumper also still looks as new.

Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?

Yes. I have looked up suppliers local to me.

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?

Yes definitely.

Thank You Smile

lovecorrie · 20/07/2011 10:51

DS is 11 - have tested shirt, jumper and trousers

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?

It looked well packaged and the quality felt good. Disliked nothing

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?

We ordered slightly larger sizes, and this was reflected when he tried them on. However, they didn't look 'big'

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?

He's happy to wear the clothes!

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?

Definitely. good quality - much improved on such brands as supermarket clothes
Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?

Obviously, it gets filthy! However, it has all washed well, even the jumper, no stretching or bobbling as yet.
Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?

More than likely.

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?

If I was asked, i would, yes.

Hi all - Trutex really appreciate all the feedback you've given so far and wanted to respond to a few of the points that have come up. Please see their response below:

"Firstly, I just wanted to say a big thank you everyone who has posted their feedback so far. We are delighted with the positive response and extremely grateful for the insightful comments.

Picking out some key points and questions:

Where to buy Trutex? We supply to a large number of independent retailers across the UK. To find your nearest stockist, please click here. Many of these retailers also have online stores, but a small selection can also be found here:

Thanks also to insanityscatching for the link to one of our online resellers. Just to let you know though that the products on this site are clearance lines and therefore not our entire range or latest designs.

In terms of product improvement suggestions, we do manufacture two pairs of trousers with internal adjusters. These are our flat front trouser and sturdy fit trouser, designed with a generous fit and shorter leg. In addition, the Trutex junior range of trousers is the only one to offer a slim, classic and sturdy fit, so there is a fit for everyone. Internal adjusters however seem to be a very popular requirement, so we are considering extending our products with this feature, particularly within the girls range.

We also offer a selection of softer collar blouses, which are different to those used within this trial and may be more suitable for those that found the collars a little stiff. These include our summer blouse and range of rever collar blouses. In addition, for 2012 we will be launching a number of new girls blouses in more contemporary designs, although these will still look smart for school.

Finally, we also felt the ribbing on our cotton cardigan was a little too thick on certain sizes, so this will be improved for the new season.

Thanks again.

The Trutex team"

Boy aged 5 (wears age 6 in clothes) who tried long sleeve white shirts, grey trousers and grey jumper.

Q1 What were your first impressions of the uniform? What did you like/dislike?
I like the look and feel of both the shirts and the trousers, they both felt like good quality. The jumper seemed to be good quality and felt soft and wearable, but I was concerned about how it would wash and whether it would hold its shape and feel.

Q2 Is there anything you think could be improved about any of the garments? How did you find the sizes? Did the garments you ordered fit your child?
The sizing is fine, and the fit is better than alot of the cheaper supermarket uniforms too. The jumper could be knitted a little thicker to give more warmth.

Q3 What does your child think of their new uniform?
He loved it and was keen to wear it everyday. In the past he has preferred polo shirts to real shirts but now only wants to wear his "real man shirts" as he calls them! He was showing off in it!

Q4 What do you think of the quality of the uniform? Do you think it is better quality than other brands/retailers you've bought or not?
I like the overall quality which I feel is very good. It is certainly much higher quality than the supermarket brand uniforms I normally buy. I would say that the trousers and shirts are better quality than the premium brands such as M&S but the jumper was about the same quality.

Q5 How do you feel the uniform is bearing up to washing? And to day-to-day school life?
I am pleased with how they wash. I have a routine of washing all school uniform worn that day straight after the kids go to bed so they often end up wearing the same uniform day after day that has gone through 5 machine washes a week. Alot of cheaper uniforms dont stand up to this, but I am very impressed with the way that the Trutex uniform has. So far I can see no difference in the clothes at all apart from a slight softening in the shirts and trousers which I would expect after a couple of washes anyway. As I mentioned above, I was concerned about the jumper but again I can see no deterioration. It even stood up to being tumble dried a couple of times after I forgot to remove it, with no shrinkage or felting.

Q6 Do you think you would buy uniform from Trutex again?
I would definitely consider it, although it would depend on the price. If it was significantly more expensive than M&S for example then I wouldnt buy it, but if it was a similar price then I would certainly buy the trousers and probably the shirts and jumper.

Q7 If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend Trutex uniform to your friends who have school-age children?
Yes I will be doing, particularly to a couple of friends who have sons that are very hard on their clothes as I think that this range would stand up better than the cheaper ranges do.
