We have yet another lovely new product test for you - this time it's cheese from Cathedral City. On 1 August they are launching their new 100% real Cheddar kids snacking range called Chedds and want to give MNers the chance to be one of the first to try it. They say: "Chedds is available in three fun formats: Cheese and Toasties - mini slices of real Cheddar and melba toast, Nibbles - a mini bag of bite sized Cheddar cubes that kids will love to share and Bricks - mini blocks of Cheddar that are perfect for kids on the go."

We're looking for 50 testers who....

~ Live or can get the cheese delivered within the M25 next Tuesday or Wednesday - you can choose the day of delivery. The reason for this is obviously because the cheese is a chilled item and deliveries will be sent by courier so they don't get too hot. You can get the product delivered to a workplace (with fridge) if this helps.

~ Ideally have a child aged between approx. 6-10 (we can have some flexibility on this)

If selected, you will get samples of each product. All we ask is that your child(ren) and if possible you, try the Chedds and add your feedback to a thread on Mumsnet - we'll be looking for your views on the product in general and how your child feels about the product and the packaging as well as the taste.

Everyone who is selected and who adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will get a £100 Space NK voucher

If you're able and willing please add your details here

Thanks and good luck

My 10 year old loves all 3 but also said the packs are hardish to open. She says the cheese in all 3 types is nice (by which I think she means not too strong). As a time-poor (and lazy!) mum I am particularly pleased with the french toast and cheese kits for packed lunches! I am bored of cutting up bits of cheese for sarnies and with tuc biscuits so these will make a nice change. Trying them on my 8 year old boy tomorrow (he's autistic, so I'll only know if he likes them if he actually eats them)

sickofsocalledexperts · 20/07/2011 19:23

I ate some too , in the interests of research of course, and liked all 3 types. The nibbles make a nice change (neither me nor DD have seen anything quite like this before), the bricks are satisfying but the little french toast packs were a big mingey in terms of volume. It was just a couple of bites and then gone, but I suppose for smaller mouths it might be ok. All in all, very good news, as I can't stand the cheese strings I normally put in their packed lunches. I wonder how much they cost though, that could be a factor.

moonbells · 20/07/2011 19:38

DS has now eaten one of everything, but was still insisting that he wanted another pack of the toasties, so he got one. I asked him why and he said he loves the toast pieces with the cheese. He also likes the cheddar, though I've not yet found a cheddar he doesn't like. Including grade 6 mature...

I ought to mention that weekend breakfasts here are continental ie different sliced cheeses and sliced meats with toast.

When are they going to be in the shops? I think there may be a riot here once he's eaten the last one if I can't find more... the toasties are perfect sizes for little fingers too.

moonbells · 20/07/2011 19:46

Oh forgot, DS can't open the packs either. I had to do it for him. Especially the toast one. Bigger tear starter notches?

I can hear him telling DH about it now - they're doing toothbrushing, He's very excited! (He thinks the cubes were fun too judging by the comments)

I am going with a resounding success in this house. Thankyou!

ChippyMinton · 20/07/2011 21:32

We have cheese Smile

DD(7) tried the toast things whilst DS2(8) pulled faces. She started with an almighty struggle to open the foil, a Shock at the pathetic contents, created a 'scooby snack' which promptly collapsed, took a bite then declared it "disgusting". DS2 then claimed them and scoffed the lot. So 50/50 on the toast. I thought the cheese was too mild and the toast slightly sweet. Not nice.

The little cubes went down well. DD is going to take some into school tomorrow for pizza making.

And the bricks were ok too, but I would echo the 'hard to open' comments.

Here's our verdict on Chedds

The tasters were;

Myself
DS1 [14]
DS2 [11]
DS3 [8]

General packaging

We liked the packaging, we liked the cartoon mouse he reminded me of Speedy Gonzalez! , they liked the 'facts', the younger 2 particularly liked the jokes. I liked the facts and jokes because anything that gets my youngest reading more is a good thing.

The colour of the packaging being the same as the 'grown up' cathedral city cheddar is good as its easy to identify if you were looking for it in the supermarket.

We didn't have a problem opening the packets at all, though the 'Nibbles' packets were definitely the easiest as they had an easy to see 'tear here' bit at the side.

Cheese and Toasties
I had one slice of cheese and one melba toast as there were 3 packs and I wasnt prepared to wrestle one off the kids!

The toasts were nice and crunchy, me personally would have enjoyed them more with a dollop of pickle!

DS1 said the melba toasts had a sweetness to them which he liked, he would have liked more in the pack but obviously they are not aimed at ever hungry 14 year olds!

DS2 liked them, he liked the crunchiness of the toasts particularly.

DS3 also liked them, he tends to like snacks rather than big meals anyway.

I can imagine them being nice with a few grapes to munch with them.

Bricks
These were the least popular.

DS2 said they seemed too strong.

DS3 said 'they were too much cheese'

DS1 did like them.

I quite liked them, but I like to eat foods with contrasting textures and found a chunk of cheese with nothing else a bit boring TBH.

Nibbles
These were everyones favourite.

All of the kids said they liked these the most.

I think i'd give these to DS3 with some sliced apple or grapes as an after school pre dinner snack.

DS1 said he could really taste the cheese with these small chunks.

DS2 liked them because 'they werent too much but they were still very tasty'

DS3 took them all out and made a pile, then chomped his way through them all.

There were 6 bags in the pack and the last 2 packs had to be divided up between the three of them-they were that popular.

I liked these, I think, even though I know what cathedral city tastes like I was expecting the cheese to have more of a processed taste like cheesestrings et al.

Overall

Nibbles came out tops.
I think 'little' food is always popular with kids, mini portions of food always seem to go down well at childrens parties IME.

I think the smallness of them was just right to get a good enough taste without it being too much.

Price depending I think I would buy these.

I would possibly buy the Cheese and Toasties but would feel that they would need something else with them to cut through the dryness of the toasts.

I dont think I would buy the Bricks as they just werent popular with the boys.

That said....I have just eaten the last Brick with a pack of worcestershire sauce flavour crisps!

I was pleasantly surprised with Chedds They had the balance right with taste/strength.

I love the cool bag too!

Thanks for your feedback so far...we will be starting a 'proper' feedback thread I think on Friday once everyone has had chance to receive them and to try them with the children so do try and hold fire for now....

pengymum · 20/07/2011 23:49

holding fire.... till Friday as per AnnMumsnet's request [:)]
Do think the packaging is a little excessive though, especially in this day and age! In fact felt could be classed as misleading as I was a little disappointed at the contents compared to the size of package. Liked the cool bag tho!
Will post more details once feedback thread up.

AmberLeaf · 21/07/2011 00:20

Oops Blush

Ill repost my post on the proper thread on friday then.....

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 21/07/2011 10:14

OK. Will try to make sure the cheese isn't all eaten before then. (looks in fridgel). Ah...

SE13Mummy · 21/07/2011 15:10

I received mine yesterday but only reclaimed them from the school fridge this morning so DD1 hasn't seen them yet. DD2 (aged 2) has fallen in love with the cool bag though, "oohh, nice bag Mummy... my bag".

sickofsocalledexperts · 21/07/2011 18:37

Have to admit that mum has nicked most of the chedd bricks, love the creamy cheddar!

DD likes the jokes on packs.

DS did not eat his today, but he is autistic so doesn't like new stuff, will try again tomorrow.

Wondering if a really lazy mum (not me, of course) would use the nibbles instead of grating cheese on top of stuff?

My daughter also gave some bits of nibbles to her hamster, but I'm sure that is not very useful feedback.

Solo · 21/07/2011 18:37

Hmmmmmmm...:)
