Dolmio Tomato Growing Seeds - progress reporting thread

AnnMumsnet · 06/05/2011 09:26

This thread is for the MNers who are growing tomato plants from seed courtsey of Dolmio (well at least they are hoping to Grin). The project is designed to highlight the fact that 100% of Dolmio tomatoes are grown outdoors in the sun (not in greenhouses). For more info on Dolmio please click here

If you are a tomato grower and part of this project please add your updates below - we'd love to know about the plants at each stage - from humble seedlings to the fully grown fruit! Do let us know how, if at all, your children are getting involved as well. If you are not so succesful don't worry please also let us know here. If you need any advice please ask and if you can offer advice please do so!

Details for sending in photos is on the email sent.

Everyone who takes part in this project and who adds their feedback and sends in at least one photo will be entered into a prize draw to win one of two £200 John Lewis vouchers and a Dolmio hamper (to be mailed out in September).

Thanks and best of luck

I'm getting worried about ours. We repotted them but now they won't stand up! They're all droopy. Maybe this rain will help them??

AtYourCervix · 06/06/2011 11:14

mine have flowers on Grin i was very happy.

KnitterNotTwitter · 06/06/2011 12:42

Hey fellow tomateers...

Our seeds have come up nicely in seed trays in the greenhouse on the allotment. DS did the seed springling (and I then moved them around out of one big pile so that they had a chance of germinating... They're growing beautifully so yesterday DS and I potted them on into little pots... they'll go in grow bags when they're bigger :)

We've got about 30 plants - maybe more - so have been offering them aroudn the allotment site to find good homes for them :)

AnnMumsnet · 06/06/2011 12:46

gottasmile - have you tied them to a cane? I don't know much about it but my DD has some on the go from her granddad and he recommends a cane to keep them upright!

Well done everyone on progress and Sad for the dead ones...boo.

gottasmile - also when you repot them did you plant them deeper than they origianlly were? If you plant them deeper they put out extra roots which helps them be more stable in their new pots... I think you can plant them as deep as the first leaves if you want...

clayre · 06/06/2011 12:57

Mine are now in big pots in the garden and are growing rapdly, very jealous of those of you with flowers already!

PaperView · 06/06/2011 20:18

Right i still have none so planted the final 10 or so. Some are outside in medium pots and some are inside in small pots for now. I used 2 diff types of compost too Hmm i don't even like tomatoes this was for the DCs

TheMonster · 06/06/2011 20:33

Flowers alreadt, AtYOurCervix??!!! That's good going. Mine are still weeny.

AtYourCervix · 07/06/2011 07:40

they are in a very sheltered sunny spot. and MIL looked after them last week so has probably been feeding them plutonium or something.

Lavitabellissima · 07/06/2011 08:10

MIL planted all my seeds, so we have loads of seedlings, I've DP has moved 13 seedlings into bigger pots outside.

Has everyone decided which 3 stages they are going to photograph & send in?
I might send my first pic now, one of them when the tomatoes grow & a pic of the results Hmm

gottasmile · 07/06/2011 13:45

Thank you AnnMumsnet - I'll try the cane (hopeful). They're just so droopy, but they're still green!

KnitterNotTwitter, I did plant them quite deep..... (but maybe not deep enough?) I'm hoping that they'll spring back up.

Thank you both for the advice!

KnitterNotTwitter · 08/06/2011 16:21

gotta i'm sure they'll be fine - will have my fingers crossed!

I've got so many seedlings that I've offered them to friends - so far 15 have found good homes so I'll be spreading the love :-)

AnnMumsnet · 08/06/2011 17:51

Hey testers - a selection of the pictures are up....
enjoy - do continue to send them in - are any bigger than these? If so, send in a piccie if you can Grin

I have planted about five seeds per pot, but not getting much of a result just yet. I've got a couple of leaves poking through, so have sent off a pic of those. Hope to get a better picture soon.

mollymole · 08/06/2011 19:44

I have 28 all at about 3-5" tall and they have been outside a week now, (and the rain over the past 2 days meens I have not had to water them)

KnitterNotTwitter · 10/06/2011 12:47

don't suppose someone can PM me the details of where we email pictures to - I can't find the email - sorry...

JulesJules · 10/06/2011 19:22

Knitter I sent mine to [email protected]

jenniferturkington · 11/06/2011 07:11

Cute photos, love the one of the dc wearing the science goggles as if conducting a very dangerous experiment Grin

Well my seedlings seem to be the world's slowest growest plants. They are fine, just taking their time!

TheMonster · 11/06/2011 10:48

Mine seem to be quite happy outside now, and, as mollymole said, the recent rain has meant no watering duties for me this week.
I hope to take a photo later today.

TheMonster · 11/06/2011 12:26

I've done the photo and emailed it Smile

KnitterNotTwitter · 11/06/2011 17:06

Hey - thanks for the email address for the tomato-watch photos... Just sent 'em in :)

TheMonster · 11/06/2011 17:12

WHose little girl is it in the photos, the one in the pink top? She is beautiful!

Cattleprod · 11/06/2011 17:18

The seedlings are now planted in buckets in the garden. They are still very much seedlings, with two sets of leaves each, but I've given them some plant food and I have high hopes for them.

Still have loads left though - going to donate them to the in-laws tomorrow, as the slugs and birds have eaten all their veggie plants.

TheMonster · 11/06/2011 17:20

Cattleprod, I put mine outside when they were like that and they look very happy now.

craftynclothy · 11/06/2011 17:51

I've sent a photo but I accidentally sent the email without the photo first time Blush
