Dolmio Tomato Growing Seeds - progress reporting thread

AnnMumsnet · 06/05/2011 09:26

This thread is for the MNers who are growing tomato plants from seed courtsey of Dolmio (well at least they are hoping to Grin). The project is designed to highlight the fact that 100% of Dolmio tomatoes are grown outdoors in the sun (not in greenhouses). For more info on Dolmio please click here

If you are a tomato grower and part of this project please add your updates below - we'd love to know about the plants at each stage - from humble seedlings to the fully grown fruit! Do let us know how, if at all, your children are getting involved as well. If you are not so succesful don't worry please also let us know here. If you need any advice please ask and if you can offer advice please do so!

Details for sending in photos is on the email sent.

Everyone who takes part in this project and who adds their feedback and sends in at least one photo will be entered into a prize draw to win one of two £200 John Lewis vouchers and a Dolmio hamper (to be mailed out in September).

Thanks and best of luck
MNHQ

Mine are still tiny, I'm waiting until they look a bit more exciting to send any photo's in.

Given some to my next door neighbours too, as MIL planted all 60 or so seeds Hmm

Bicnod · 12/06/2011 19:56

My poor little tomato plants are outside in the wind and lashing rain :( hope they survive.

I planted four out about a week ago and gave the rest away.

Love the pics :)

TheMonster · 12/06/2011 19:59

We planted all the seeds too, and had rather too many seedlings Grin

I'm feeling very green fingered at the moment. My strawberry plants are doing really well and I have never done strawberries before.

smokinaces · 13/06/2011 20:16

We have our first flower!!! Grin

smokinaces · 13/06/2011 20:19

Grow, grow, grow!

PaperView · 15/06/2011 12:11

I have 3 now!!!

Ok so one is literally just a leaf but it's a start Grin

Grockle · 17/06/2011 21:28

Ooo, looking good now! My seedlings are liking the rain!

ConfessionsOfAnAchingFanjo · 18/06/2011 10:46

My seedlings are about ready to go into bigger pots now. Been keeping them on the window sill for the most part and taking them out on the odd warm sunny day we get. Seems to be doing the job Grin

Adair · 20/06/2011 10:49

Hello
We planted ours with green-fingered Auntie and they do actually see to be growing! Will check later and update...

DiNammic · 20/06/2011 12:29

frigging hell
dolmio give a 20 p packet of seed away and get all this free publicity

nice work

Adair · 20/06/2011 12:50

Well, duh. They pay MN a hefty whack too I assume.

That;s how marketing works, isn't it? Could think of worse ways to get publicity...

allthefires · 21/06/2011 07:07

MNHQ - I added feedback (I killed mine with water) but have sent no photo.

Do I need to send dead plant photo to be entered into prize draw?

craftynclothy · 21/06/2011 10:41

Well lots of ours are outside, getting battered by the wind and next door's football but we still have some inside that really need to go into big pots/grobags but we've not got round to doing it. I think the idea of putting all the seeds in cos I'm likely to kill lots of them has backfired Grin

BornToFolk · 21/06/2011 10:46

Mine are two little plants now. They need potting on into grow bags really but haven't quite got round to it yet. Maybe later, if it doesn't rain...

However, my bigger tomato plants are suffering from leaf curl. The top leaves curl right up and look like little caterpillars! Has anyone had any experience of this?

I had a Google and basically discovered that it could be:

  • too much water
  • not enough water
  • shock from exposure to high winds/cold temps

so I'm really none the wiser about what caused it. Confused

Apparently the plants probably won't recover but it shouldn't affect them too much.

AnnMumsnet · 21/06/2011 11:55

allthefires Sad - Will mark your file accordingly, don't worry!

Mine are coming on a treat!! have 10 plants all about 10cm high, however all this rain is goingto do them no favours at all! - Now when do I need to start picking off leaves etc?

TheMonster · 21/06/2011 18:57

Mine are getting battered outside but look strong enough to deal with it. My little soldiers!
Any experts on what to do next?

Spirael · 23/06/2011 12:40

My plants are now outside in the growbags, bathed in rain sunshine. They're next to some chilli plants, for flavour company.

DH is getting involved now too - he rescued the runt plant I was going to compost, as I had one more than the available growbag space. He planted Runt out in a special pot and was last seen trying to calculate the best place in the garden for sunshine. Grin

gottasmile · 23/06/2011 13:37

I've been putting this off....... my little ones didn't make it. They just didn't recover from the repotting. I really thought I had done everything right...... I guess my file has to be "marked accordingly" now too :(

AlmaMartyr · 23/06/2011 13:58

Mine are still all about 3 inches tall. We haven't had any decent weather for weeks now so I don't think they are getting enough sunlight to grow :( Still, all still alive and some of them have lots of leaves.
