AnnMumsnet · 06/05/2011 09:26

This thread is for the MNers who are growing tomato plants from seed courtsey of Dolmio (well at least they are hoping to Grin). The project is designed to highlight the fact that 100% of Dolmio tomatoes are grown outdoors in the sun (not in greenhouses). For more info on Dolmio please click here

If you are a tomato grower and part of this project please add your updates below - we'd love to know about the plants at each stage - from humble seedlings to the fully grown fruit! Do let us know how, if at all, your children are getting involved as well. If you are not so succesful don't worry please also let us know here. If you need any advice please ask and if you can offer advice please do so!

Details for sending in photos is on the email sent.

Everyone who takes part in this project and who adds their feedback and sends in at least one photo will be entered into a prize draw to win one of two £200 John Lewis vouchers and a Dolmio hamper (to be mailed out in September).

Thanks and best of luck

hum. mine are growing outward rather than upwards. I Fear pruning them, what if I snip the wrong bit? Confused

ouryve · 04/07/2011 13:26

Jealous of the tomatoes! We're only just getting them on the plants that had a 3 week head start on this one!

DS and i did repot our seedling at the weekend, though. Hopefully a bigger pot will encourage it to grow a bit more and actually flower.

TheMonster · 04/07/2011 21:22

No flowers here, but plenty of greenfly. Argh!

moonbells · 05/07/2011 11:15

well I have such weedy plants you wouldn't believe. I have some similar-age Moneymakers which are much more compact. No idea if they'll survive us going on holiday!

whippet · 05/07/2011 14:03

Ours were growing tall and spindley in the conservatory, so we've planted them outside in the veg bed in a sunny corner of the garden - now they're going great guns!

Little green tomatoes beginning to form behind where the flowers were.

Have had to tie them to canes though, as they are a bit too tall - wish I'd known about the 'pinching out' thing!

Bicnod · 05/07/2011 14:16

Oooooo - we've got our first flower Grin

whippet - what is 'pinching out'? Mine are just growing taller and taller - will probably need canes soon too...

HarrietJones · 05/07/2011 14:18

Just had another email which reminded me to come back here. We didn't get a single seedling. Having trouble with seeds not germinating this year Hmm

DaveGrohlsgirl · 05/07/2011 14:20

I have failed miserably, seedlings came up, I tended them, they died Sad. Will try again!!

Thanks whippet :)

Ann - I've emailed you the latest photographic evidence from Project Tomato chez spout.

My specimens are just hanging in there rather than flourishing. No flowers yet. I'm not giving up on them, I've grown rather fond of their merry little leaves

LaVitaBellissima · 05/07/2011 19:10

No flowers here but in the garden & growing well, will send in a photo tomorrow, after I've pruned a bit!

mollymole · 05/07/2011 19:32

no flowers here yet but they are doing well and are sturdy, have them 3 trusses high and they are very leafy - hope not too much leaf, i've kept nipping of extras

OpusProSerenus · 05/07/2011 20:47

My plants grew really well at first but have just stopped! They are still about 8 inches tall and have not changed or grown for weeks. I've got them in Miracle-Gro compost and am debating planting them into grobags this week wherher they're growing or not.

I think my problem is that I have nowhere sunny behind glass (like greenhouse or sunny porch) to bring them on.

Anyway am going to be ruthless and plant them out

SoloAgainItSeems · 05/07/2011 23:02

Dd's Mine all died. Well the couple that actually peeped through the compost :( Gutted!!!

SoloAgainItSeems · 05/07/2011 23:05

Where do we send the photo's btw? I have planting pictures and proud of the planting pictures...

AnnMumsnet · 05/07/2011 23:11

solo...if you send them to me that would be great...I emailed you all today but PM me if you need the address. thanks

Thanks Ann, will do :)

whomovedmychocolate · 05/07/2011 23:34

I have flowers but no fruit yet. Mine has survived frost, extreme heat and being sat on by DS. Fingers crossed.

PuzzleRocks · 06/07/2011 08:40

I'm so far behind everyone else I will never have a picture that hasn't already been done.
I need a limelight stealing stunt. Will you print pictures of DH tending them in the nude?

missorinoco · 06/07/2011 08:51

Puzzle, I presume it depends how he's watering them. Grin

My went on growth strike after being repotted outside. For some reason DH bought a load of grow bags after consultation with the local garden centre then potted them in the ground anyway. And I have no recollection of why we needed marigolds next to them.

Finally got some flowers, hurrah! MN, my photos are no where near as good as those on your link, just to warn you. Envious at those who can get their children to both look at the camera at the same time and not have a stupid expression on their face!

PuzzleRocks · 06/07/2011 09:14
Grin
SoloAgainItSeems · 06/07/2011 12:12

Marigolds keep slugs and snails away!

I was talking to Mum on the phone this morning and she tells me she's going to buy some lettuce seeds today, to which I replied; 'I wouldn't bother Mum, judging by the other seeds that have failed again this year ~ you know! the tomatoes' Mum says, 'they are fine solo, ask Dd.' Dd tells me they are ( A R M S ) this big and I say no Dd, they are not 4 feet tall, so Dd shows me a couple of inches on her fingers! I would appear dear readers, that I was looking at the Sunflower trays, which were sown at the same time as the tomatoes!!! which means that they are not dead!!! Grin

AlmaMartyr · 06/07/2011 13:22

I'm repotting mine this afternoon, hoping that they'll fare a bit better outdoors in new pots since they haven't grown for months now Hmm We're not getting much sustained sunlight though (except for this last weekend which was gorgeous!). Hopefully they'll pick up a bit if the weather perks up.

MadameBoo · 08/07/2011 00:10

Haven't posted on here for ages. We repotted the seedlings and they're now about 4" high each - must take some pics. I was going to tryto grow them without tomato food and just using compost from our composter - but I think they need some.
