AnnMumsnet · 23/11/2010 18:34

This thread is for the 10 Mumsnetters who are reviewing a Sharp Plasmacluster air purifier in their home. All reviewers have at least one child with asthma or dust allergies - this could be mild, moderate or severe. Reviewers will be adding feedback and thoughts over the next three months, in a diary style.

However if you are not a reviewer but are interested in this product please feel free to add comments or ask questions of Sharp or of the reviewers.

Please note: This feedback will only be used by Sharp to inform their development of the product, it will not be treated as a clinical trial.

Sharp have some specific areas they would like you to comment on - you won't be able to add comments/ views on all of these straight away as some are looking at the longer term issues so please do revisit the thread and update your responses over the period of the review.

Please state the age of your child(ren) with asthma / dust allergies as well as the severity of their condition.

Initially, please add your first impressions of the product when it arrived: for example: overall first impressions of the product, was it what you expected? Where have you placed it? How was it to get it set up/ started etc. If you have any queries about the product please either post them here and Sharp will aim to respond or email MNHQ.

Then once you have had the product in your home for awhile, please add your thoughts, comments or experiences regarding the following areas - and the possible effects the air purifier has had for yourself and your child(ren).

Affect on asthma / dust allergy generally
Any reduction in illnesses in the home or affects on winter colds you would normally expect to see
Any reduction in smells around the home
Any reduction or effect on dust in the home - and the effect of this on your child with asthma
Any reduction or effect on mould in and around the home (in troublesome areas such as Bathroom and Kitchen where ventilation might be an issue) - and the effect of this on your child with asthma
Any other comments?

All reviewers who add feedback here will receive a £50 high street gift voucher as a token of thanks for taking part.

Many thanks

MNHQ

Anyone else having probs with a smelly filter, the one that sits in the water?

I have followed all instructions on cleaning since day one and it is totally stinking, smells like a damp wet dog, boak!

HELP

YES! It is disgusting!

Not sure what to do about it. It seems as though it needs to go in a boil wash.

I have stopped using the unit because I can't get rid of the smell.

Glad it's not just me, meant to be a 2 year life span on that filter I think. I have soaked it in the citric acid and also let it dry out completely and it is still minging.

Someone is going to contact me about it, hopefully ASAP as it's just awful.

Got my invoice requesting payment today. :(

Gemma said someone would contact me too. I'm going away soon, so they will have to be quick! Grin

Yup - we are having wet dog problems too esp. if it has been off for an hour or 2.

I have found two boxes that I can tape together and will be the perfect size!

I had gone to post office, specialty stationary shop, tesco, M&S... all over the high street yesterday but not a box of that size to be found.

I KNOW the original is in the loft somewhere, but DH still can't get up there and look because of his injury and I can't get to it on my own with the really heavy boxes in front.

Thank goodness for these that have turned up today :)

Now, I hope they actually show up today.

BTW I'm getting that wet stinky smell, too. Good timing for it to go!

I hope they contact me soon. As at least four of us are having the same problem, it must be something they know about.

Amazing how it has happened just after the test period has ended!

Unit not even 6 months old so shouldn't be smelly yet surely.
Glad it's not just me though, hopefully will hear something soon.

Success! My machine has been collected! Right on time, too! We have a viewing on our flat tomorrow (trying to sell) and the absence of it opens up a lot of space. Running new nonsmelly purifier alongside humidifier now and DS doing very well with breathing :)

Has anyone heard from Sharp yet?

I am away for two weeks from tomorrow!

Report
StarExpat · 05/04/2011 15:48

Well :( spoke too soon.
Cough is back. Horrible. Would rather stinky machine than this. Sometimes coughing leaves him gasping for a breath. They told me inhaler only 4 hours apart? Anyone with experience who can advise? Sorry for the hijack
He's 2 and 1/2

FannyFifer · 05/04/2011 15:55

Not heard from Sharp yet, it is really smelly still, [boak]
Oh no StarExpat, we have tried so many things with the cough, if it's the blue inhaler you can give more often than 4 hourly.
Other things we have tried are antihistamine, steroid nose spray, have you the brown inhaler as well? Poor chap. X

DaftApeth · 05/04/2011 16:21

I wonder if it would harm the machine to use it with water container empty and without the green filter in, and on the non- humidifier setting?

Report
FannyFifer · 05/04/2011 17:38

Not sure, think if the water runs out it just changes automatically to non humidifier setting so would prob be ok to do that.

I still have my machine sitting in the hall......... getting a bit bored now.....

Report
StarExpat · 05/04/2011 21:02

Thanks FF. He's just turned 2.6 so we have an spot soon as they said they would not consider brown preventative inhaler until after 2yrs 6months. Hmm
good to know it's safe to give blue more often. I know adults can but wasn't sure about little ones and one dr said it would be harmful if more than 4 hourly. ugh.
anyway, will persevere. Also noticed humidifier isn't working so that may help once replaced.
Thanks so much
QOD I hope they take it off you soon.

Not heard anything from Sharp yet re filter.
DS has a cough again at minute as I have not been able to have it on constantly due to smell. Fun.
