Hi all,

We’re pleased to announce a Mumsnet Asks Zoomchat with Tory Leadership candidate Robert Jenrick MP on Tuesday 29th October at 5pm. Please post your questions below, and Justine will put a selection to Robert via Zoom.
You’ll be able to watch live by registering here but we’ll also be recording so you can catch up if you can’t make it. We won’t be able to take questions during the chat so please do make sure you post on the thread if there’s something you’d like to ask.

If you join the Zoomchat, your camera will be turned off by default. Your screen name might be visible, so consider whether you’re happy to use your real name or want to use your MN posting name - or something else entirely.

Please stick to the usual guidelines - one question per user, keep it civil, and if one topic is dominating, please don't continue to post what's effectively the same question or point (we'll be deleting questions that are repeated multiple times). We'll be limited for time so do keep questions as short as possible so that we’re able to ask more of them - as always, we'll try to make sure we cover the topics that we know are important to Mumsnet users.

Thanks,
MNHQ

What would he replace the ECHR with?

Fashionablyolder · 28/10/2024 17:33

Mr Jenrick, Why are the Conservative Party allowing Labour to keep using the £22 billion black hole in the economy to hold the Country to ransom, They must have known about any deficit, as they have access to the OBR about the countries finances well before constructing their manifesto, but they went ahead with their promises disregarding this information! Please hold the Labour Party to account as they don’t seem to want to mention the massive black hole they left In the economy when they left office 14 Yesrs ago!!

I submitted this question on the Kemi Badenoch webinar, but whether it was Mumsnet who chose not to ask the question, or Kemi who chose not to answer it, it was not addressed - despite it being the only question which recieved votes of thanks. I'll try again - with a minor adjustment:
"Given the ongoing attacks on Christianity in this country, and the worrying lack of morality in society today, what will you do to protect and enhance the Christian basis of our society?"

MellersSmellers · 28/10/2024 17:37

How will you appeal to those who aren't your core supporters, and how will you contribute to bringing the UK together for our common well-being and prosperity.

You can only see the thanks votes on your own posts so you wouldn't have seen them on anyone else's questions.

Sorry, I spelled 'received' incorrectly 🫣

Thanks

Hi Robert,

In her Zoomchat yesterday, Kemi said that she doesn't think the government can encourage people to have more children - or even that they should. Given the fertility rate in this country is now at a record low - with potentially problematic consequences for eg social care - do you agree?

FozzieP · 28/10/2024 22:23

What is the Conservative stance on rolling over and allowing fossil-fuel using countries to make our virgin steel as well as cutting livestock production and growing flowers on good agricultural land thus importing meat and milk and jeopardising our food security, and all in the name of the pursuit of net zero?

Iamiams · 29/10/2024 00:23

How does your stance on women’s rights differ from Kemi Badenochs?

wavingfuriously · 29/10/2024 00:27

You'd be a perfect leader except for your views on Israel.

ACynicalDad · 29/10/2024 00:32

The first Tory leader of this period will be a sacrificial lamb who will have to resign after the next election. Did James Cleverly play a blinder, letting you through so that he can be leader in 4 years' time with a chance of reclaiming power in 8 or 9 years' time? I presume and I hope Kemi will be that sacrificial lamb.

ilovesooty · 29/10/2024 01:32

What plans do you have have to restore public confidence in your party? What lessons have you learnt from the scale of your defeat in the general election?

Pepperpighere · 29/10/2024 08:46

You recently said that if you were American you'd support Donald Trump in the US election. How do you square this with what we know about Trump's character - the hush money payments, the vile behaviour towards women, the attempts to overturn the 2020 election including incitement to rioting, the on-going inflammatory rhetoric about race, his political opponents and the media. Do you not think character is important in a leader?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/10/2024 08:49

Hi Robert

Thanks for doing this. Could you explain how you would seek to protect the rights of women to female only spaces (such as rape crisis services, prisons, toilets, hospital care, changing rooms) when we need them, as is provided for in the Equality Act 2010? Transgender identity is one thing, but biological sex is more important on some occasions. This is for reasons of safety, but equally privacy and dignity.

Bunpea · 29/10/2024 08:49

In light of what is happening in countries such as Iran and Afghanistan, as well as the Sara Sharif case, what is your point of view on the growth of the influence of Islam in the UK and its impact on rights and opportunities for girls and women?

DaisysChains · 29/10/2024 08:54

How, specifically, will you stop males from abusing females and children, and ensure those that have already done so are punished and kept away from females and children?

oddledoo · 29/10/2024 08:58

Thanks for coming on! If you win, how will you balance the demands of being the leader of your party with caring for your young family? How are the chores split up in the Jenrick household between you and your partner?

bananaboat · 29/10/2024 09:04

You seem to have had some success with Ozempic and weight loss - do you think it should be more readily available even to those who aren't clinically obese? We know there are a host of chronic diseases associated with being overweight - couldn't we save the NHS a lot of dosh if we didn't restrict it to those who could afford to go private?

ForAzureCat · 29/10/2024 09:08

Hi Robert,

You've previously spoken about taking Ozempic to lose weight (presumably having got it privately?). Do you think drugs like Ozempic should be more freely available on the NHS as Wes Streeting has proposed? There seems to be a perception at the minute that the drugs are an 'easy' fix that only tackle the issue of obesity on the surface rather than the long term causes - do you agree with that?

MonkeyToHeaven · 29/10/2024 09:25

Hi Robert,

Have Tower Hamlet's Council forgiven you for trying to help your friend Richard Desmond avoid paying them an estimated £30-50million?

Or, as Desmond said in a communication with you, do they now agree "Good news finally the inspectors reports have gone to you today, we appreciate the speed as we don't want to give Marxists loads of doe for nothing!"

Are you still managing to drive & use the train at the same time and will you pass on tips so the rest of us can fiddle our expenses too?

TheRubyJoker · 29/10/2024 09:27

You took umbrage at Kemi Badenoch's comments this week that “Integrity matters … with me you’d have a leader where there’s no scandal.” Presumably she was referring to events in 2020 when you unlawfully approved the Westferry development after being lobbied by Tory donor Richard Desmond. Can you see why actions like that undermine trust in politicians, and why people might find it hard to understand how even though you broke the rules and tried to cover it up you're now running for leader of your Party with seemingly no long term consequences for your career?

dreamingofspain · 29/10/2024 09:33

Hi Robert. I'd like to ask about the cartoon murals you ordered to be painted over at the processing centre in Kent last year. Even Nigel Farage called your actions "mean". I know recently that you've said that you did it to "weed out those posing as children" which is obviously important, so can you explain to us exactly how painting over cartoons on a wall helped you to do that?

Dropthepilots · 29/10/2024 09:51

Hello Mr Jenrick
You have stated that you would like to cut benefits to those claiming due to ill health or disability, in order to reduce income tax. How would you avoid further disadvantaging disabled people who are already disproportionately impacted by the cost of living crisis?

FozzieP · 29/10/2024 10:08

Are you going to spend the, hopefully only five, years in opposition, coming up with a realistic plan to make the NHS fit for purpose and to get the public sector back to pre-pandemic levels of productivity.
