Hi all,

We’re pleased to announce a Mumsnet Asks Zoomchat with Tory Leadership candidate Kemi Badenoch MP on Monday 28th October at 10am. Please post your questions below, and Justine will put a selection to Kemi via Zoom.

You’ll be able to watch live by registering here but we’ll also be recording so you can catch up if you can’t make it. We won’t be able to take questions during the chat so please do make sure you post on the thread if there’s something you’d like to ask. We’ll be closing the thread to questions on Sunday morning.

If you join the Zoomchat, your camera will be turned off by default. Your screen name might be visible, so consider whether you’re happy to use your real name or want to use your MN posting name - or something else entirely.

Please stick to the usual guidelines - one question per user, keep it civil, and if one topic is dominating, please don't continue to post what's effectively the same question or point (we'll be deleting questions that are repeated multiple times). We'll be limited for time so do keep questions as short as possible so that we’re able to ask more of them - as always, we'll try to make sure we cover the topics that we know are important to Mumsnet users.

Thanks,
MNHQ.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for all your questions - you can watch the recording of Justine's interview with Kemi here.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Thank you - and to Justine and Kemi.

Unfortunately I was working today so wasn't able to listen live. I've seen the transcript of Kemi's (great) answer to my question but will also listen live to the whole conversation.

Hi @BonfireLady where did you see the transcript?

ChocolateGanache · 28/10/2024 17:26

Hi Kemi

Why do you think some cultures should be less valued and who are you to say which these should be?

Do you not understand why many people hate the actions of the Israeli government?

MarmiteMakesMeHappy · 28/10/2024 17:43

I have just watched the whole recording. I thought Kemi was pretty direct and clear in her responses and whether you agree with her or not (I found myself agreeing with more than I had expected), I was pleased that she did answer most things head on, rather than deflecting, which was surprisingly refreshing.

Thanks to both Kemi and Justine for this.

I'm not a Tory but must admit was surprisingly impressed with her overall performance.

I assume she's going to beat Jenrick.

ChocolateGanache · 28/10/2024 18:07

I wouldn't vote Tory if you paid me.
But she's definitely coming accountable better than Boris, Rishi, Teresa, etc...

She’s very impressive. I’d vote conservative if she was leader

Have to admit I felt that MNHQ's questions were given priority over user questions, maybe we should have been warned that we were only getting maybe less than 50%. Hmm

Was sad that the question I wasnt asked about the conflict between GI and GC feminism wasn't asked as I specifically put it within the context of how she could follow up on work already done, and the outstanding issues raised by the Westminster Hall debate, as we already know what here opinions are on the issue. ie she wasn't put on the spot.

But agree she is an impressive speaker, who seems to have a grasp of a very wide range of issues.

She appears to be saying she puts practicality before political grand standing, and can see this lets get things done isn't always what voters want.

And can see why she might get and appear to get exasperated with people.

Hi @BonfireLady where did you see the transcript?

Sorry, just catching up. Hopefully you saw Arabella's answer above. She was my source for the transcript ☺️

Kemi Badenoch: Children can’t be transgender
Telegraph write up of web chat
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/10/28/kemi-badenoch-children-cannot-be-transgender/

It's great news that this got picked up. When I saw what she said I had a feeling it might.

I'm not a Tory but must admit was surprisingly impressed with her overall performance.
I assume she's going to beat Jenrick.

I still haven't had chance to watch it yet but most times that I have heard her speak (where she has the opportunity to fully express her thoughts) I've been impressed. I assume/hope so too.

She’s very impressive. I’d vote conservative if she was leader

I wouldn't go this far because I don't feel my politics is closely aligned enough with Tory politics. However, I did vote for my Tory MP for the first time ever at the last election. I had been intending to spoil my ballot, even though I already knew his support of "GC" views, because of my lack of overall political alignment with the party. Looking through the manifestos in July confirmed this. However, I did look at his record on local issues and realised that this was worth voting for. I had previously told him in person that I would be spoiling my ballot. To his credit, he had accepted this without comment.

I hadn't realised this would be so soon, but having read the questions he has been asked making me aware of many things I didn't know about him, can only hope more than ever that KB wins. Shock
