Hello

We’re pleased to announce a Mumsnet Zoomchat with longstanding Mumsnet favourite Dr Michael Mosley, the man behind the 5:2 and Fast 800 healthy eating plans. He’ll be chatting with Mumsnet HQ and answering all your questions on Wednesday 20th January at 7pm (NB: please note time change from 8pm), and you can book your place now by visiting our Zoom webinar link.

Michael trained as a doctor before becoming a journalist and television presenter and is probably best known for his TV programmes about biology and medicine. He’ll be coming to your TV soon with a new series focusing on his Fast 800 approach to healthy eating and weight and has a new book out - Fast 800 Easy.

So if you’d like to hear what he has to say and have the chance to put your questions to him, please scoot over to the sign-up page to book your online place. (Places are limited so it’s first come, first served.)

Just FYI if you join the Zoomchat your camera will be turned off by default. Your screen name will be visible, so consider whether you’re happy to use your RL name or want to use your MN posting name or something else entirely. We might ask you to turn your camera on if you read your question out ‘live’, but if you’d rather not that’s absolutely fine.

Thanks
MNHQ

MESSAGE EDITED BY MNHQ - STARTING TIME HAS CHANGED TO 7pm BECAUSE OF AN UNEXPECTED ADDITION TO MICHAEL'S DIARY. MANY APOLOGIES FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE

But like any other good business person, he spotted an opportunity and has capitalised on it. At least, though, he's created an approach that is based on sound science and isn't just some kind of snake oil treatment!

But he isn't presented as a business man he is presented as a "Doctor". He graduated in medicine 40 odd years ago and never practiced to my knowledge. Random science journalist with a 40 yr old degree in science would not get the attention and credibility of the magical title "doctor" but they would be just as well qualified to do the same work and form the same opinions.

That said, the likes of Malhotra are far worse IMO - I think what he promotes is downright dangerous for many people. Mosley has just spotted a business opportunity in the bottomless well that is the diet industry and for most people the 5:2 won't actually be harmful. If you asked a hundred random people who invented the 5:2 most of those who have heard of it would say Mosley and have no clue that it was originally intended to treat a narrow part of the population.

I'd like to see @MNHQ do one of these sessions with AngryChef and Captain Science.

BIWI · 17/01/2021 10:52

... but he is a doctor. Just because he didn't practice doesn't take that away from him.

If he was peddling snakeoil treatments, then I'd be inclined to agree with you, but not in this instance.

Tell me more about your photo?!
Hi Tow, the image shows the jeans I was wearing at the start of the 8 week BSD and at the end. It's a nice reminder of how well the diet worked for me. At almost 50 I now feel the most healthy I have ever done as an adult - I only wish the benefits of low carb diets were known decades ago.
I had severe gestational diabetes with my pregnancy. Recommended to eat toast and marmalade as I injected my long acting insulin at night 🤯😡

He has a medical degree but no clinical practice experience. In medical terms he is no better qualified than any other graduate in a medical/related discipline from 40 yrs ago. The title "doctor" confers credibility on people, especially when its medical doctor.

Mosley is an effective and successful journalist, particularly in science areas. There is nothing wrong with that but other journalists can say the same and would not automatically gain that layer of trust which comes with title of medical doctor.

Mind you, there are plenty of practicing doctors who make money shilling diets when their specialism is something else entirely, a couple of whom have a special circle in hell waiting. I wouldn't put Mosley in that category.

Oh no I have missed this and really need it... Will it be available after?

BertTheBeetle · 17/01/2021 21:58

I would love to do this but I just can't imagine facing a hectic work day on only 800 calories a day. I'd keel over... how do you manage it without caving?

RowanMumsnet · 18/01/2021 09:36

@chocolatespiders

Oh no I have missed this and really need it... Will it be available after?
Hi @chocolatespiders yes we'll aim to make the video available afterwards.
RowanMumsnet · 18/01/2021 09:44
@JuliaMumsnet do you want us to ask our questions in advance, on this thread - or somewhere else/on the day itself?
Hello @BIWI!

Sorry for the confusion on this. Questions should be asked on the Zoomchat itself - there'll be a Q&A channel for people to add their questions. You'll only be able to see all of this when the Zoomchat goes live on the day (and then hopefully it will all start to make sense).

Sorry to everyone who missed out (this is obviously a popular one!) but hopefully the video will still be useful for people who can't join us live.

BIWI · 18/01/2021 09:47

Thanks @RowanMumsnet Smile

RowanMumsnet · 18/01/2021 09:48

Oh and we should flag up that Premium users get first dibs on signing up to Zoomchats, so if you want to be in with an extra chance of a place do consider joining (lots of other benefits too, including some pretty great home-learning offers at the moment)

RowanMumsnet · 18/01/2021 15:53

Hello again (I seem to have killed the thread) - sorry to announce a time change: the Zoomchat will now be starting at 7pm, not 8pm because of an unexpected last-minute change to Michael's diary.

People who've already booked a place should receive an email updating the invitiation time.

Many apologies if this causes difficulty for anyone.

Thanks
MNHQ

prettybird · 18/01/2021 16:39

Bugger - I can still make it but it's going to overlap with my obsessive watching of Biden's inauguration and the soap opera that is American politics Wink

trilottie · 18/01/2021 17:12

Argh I don't think I'm going to be able to make it any more because 7 is bang in the middle of bedtime :-(

RowanMumsnet · 19/01/2021 09:37

Very sorry to hear that @trilottie - the time change was really unavoidable but it's obviously a more awkward time-slot for some people with young children. Apologies

I hadn't clocked it was on the same day as the inauguration @prettybird Grin

ethelredonagoodday · 19/01/2021 21:26

I'm really sorry, I'm not going to be able to make it now that the time has changed. Might someone be able to ask my question for me please?

I wanted to know what MM recommends in terms of calories on days on which you are doing any training sessions? What sort of additional slofies should you be taking on?

Thanks!

ethelredonagoodday · 19/01/2021 21:27

WTH is a slofie?! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

What sort of amount of additional calories should you be taking on...

Hopeislost · 20/01/2021 11:25

Have just managed to sign up!

Foundmyfeet · 20/01/2021 20:05

I found this seminar very helpful! Thank you Dr Mosley and Mumsnet HQ!

superram · 20/01/2021 20:20

I missed it, logged on at 8. Will a recording be shared?

RandomPatternedTiles · 20/01/2021 20:20

I really enjoyed it, very interesting session and some great questions

Cooroo · 20/01/2021 23:39

That was the first such Mumsnet event I've attended and I really enjoyed it. Thanks MNHQ!

RowanMumsnet · 21/01/2021 09:05

Great to hear you enjoyed it. Apologies to those who were wrong-footed by the time change.

I think we're hoping to have a video up today - we'll post the link here when it's ready.

BIWI · 21/01/2021 09:06

I assume it's OK to post the link beyond Mumsnet?

RowanMumsnet · 21/01/2021 12:50

Yep of course BIWI

Here's the link:
