Hello

We’re pleased to announce a Mumsnet Zoomchat with longstanding Mumsnet favourite Dr Michael Mosley, the man behind the 5:2 and Fast 800 healthy eating plans. He’ll be chatting with Mumsnet HQ and answering all your questions on Wednesday 20th January at 7pm (NB: please note time change from 8pm), and you can book your place now by visiting our Zoom webinar link.

Michael trained as a doctor before becoming a journalist and television presenter and is probably best known for his TV programmes about biology and medicine. He’ll be coming to your TV soon with a new series focusing on his Fast 800 approach to healthy eating and weight and has a new book out - Fast 800 Easy.

So if you’d like to hear what he has to say and have the chance to put your questions to him, please scoot over to the sign-up page to book your online place. (Places are limited so it’s first come, first served.)

Just FYI if you join the Zoomchat your camera will be turned off by default. Your screen name will be visible, so consider whether you’re happy to use your RL name or want to use your MN posting name or something else entirely. We might ask you to turn your camera on if you read your question out ‘live’, but if you’d rather not that’s absolutely fine.

Thanks
MNHQ

I did ‘lost a stone in 21 days’. It was exactly what I needed and has actually helped disordered eating. If you don’t like fast 800 then don’t join the webcast?

Omletteforbreakfast · 16/01/2021 09:58

Thanks Mumsnet for arranging this - really looking forward to it. Am on Fast800 now myself because my Hba1c is bang on the borderline for prediabetes so after gestational diabetes 21 years ago with DS and a DM with maturity onset am seriously anxious. Would be good to know from Michael advice for those of us where weight loss is slower than those who post on the forums as to what we might expect re patterns of loss.

YeahBabyYeahYeah · 16/01/2021 10:54

@FecktheBoss it’s a weird thing and different for everyone. I’m feeling very motivated right now and not even tempted to taste all sorts of trigger foods left over from Christmas.

But at other times I can’t even last the first day until lunchtime. The brain is a weird thing.

EauDeChlorine · 16/01/2021 11:31

He lost me when he started selling shakes after advocating his Mediterranean life style and real foods. Personally I like Jason Fung’s Obesity Code. Explains his theories very well.

Omletteforbreakfast · 16/01/2021 12:08

My question - I would like to ask about what I might expect in terms of pace of weight loss and HBA1C change with less weight to lose than many on the Fast800 forum- it can be a bit disheartening to see weight loss of 5 or 6 lbs in a week when even on 800 cals, no carb cheating and exercising 1.5 lbs is what I can manage right from the start - I want to lose about 2 stone so is this why it is a bit slow or is there more I should do?

wowfudge · 16/01/2021 12:11

He's explained that meal replacement shakes can be helpful for some people - he doesn't advocate using them all the time.

BIWI · 16/01/2021 12:12

But, @EauDeChlorine, it's also a pragmatic development. Recognising that for many people having to prepare/cook either a breakfast or a lunch when you're busy is often difficult and/or can lead to consuming too many calories or carbs. The shakes that they've developed are nutritionally very sound, as well as adhering to the principles of the diet, in terms of their carb and calorie count.

What is it that you object to? Is MM only allowed to earn money from certain things?! Why wouldn't he want to monetise what he's developed?

RedHotChiliChips · 16/01/2021 12:22

I'm very much looking forward to this. I've just finished the 12 week online course but instead of 800 cal everyday I did 5:2 the entire duration as I only had a stone to lose to get in the healthy BMI range. I've now lost 1.7 stone in total, 6 inches of my waist and have never eaten so well in my life.

I've been a huge carb addict my whole life and thought I would struggle with this but it has been surprisingly easy and it's very sustainable way to eat and live. I finally feel confident that I'm actually in control rather than flinging from one carb binge to the next.

There is so much negativity towards him and also towards this plan. Rather than focus on a small group of eating disordered people who are abusing this woe, why not acknowledge all the people who are not ill with type 2 diabetes any more and have lost a lot of weight in the process. Why not give any credit for this? Go and wag your finger at Slimming World and Weight Watchers which are designed to get money out of your every month and have far worse dietary advice.

And why some PP have such a problem with MM monetising this? It's great that someone brought the low carb way of eating to the masses, it just happens to be him. Many doctors have made a lot of money by putting their names on vitamins, cosmetics etc. Jason Fung makes money out of his books and tours too.
Also, it's not just him and his wife who cream all the profits, they work with nutritionists, product photographs, publishing houses etc.

That's right. I just finished the paid 12 week plan and the shakes didn't appear in it at all.

I did buy the strawberry one when I first started, only because I wanted a back up incase I have a busy day or other emergency. I've only had it twice, mainly because it contains Stevia which I can't abide.

I prefer eating real foods and cutting out sweeteners which is what he used to advocate a few years ago when a friend and I went to see him. I reached my goal weight that way and kept it off so now I’m more interested in autophagy and effects of insulin and maintenance.

BIWI · 16/01/2021 13:09

And he still does. He also, though, recognises that sometimes life gets in the way for people.

Lndnmummy · 16/01/2021 17:48

@JuliaMumsnet I’m really looking forward to attending this webinar! It would be a huge shame if people join simply to criticise MM and it would be a real pity if people sabotage those of us that are looking to improve our health and well-being. Will attendance and the webinar be moderated to help avoid derailing by a few? Please advice. Thanks

Thewinterofdiscontent · 16/01/2021 18:08
@Offskki

It was definitely centred within an eating disorder framework. Not exclusively exacerbating already existing disorders but encouraging mindsets and habits that form disorders. I've got it somewhere!

@BIWI There are plenty of people who are entirely happy to follow his advice, and that is their prerogative. It would be unwise to blindly follow 'celebrity' dr advice without anything else to back it regardless of who they are. I'm sure he'll be fine Hmm
Medical advice is consistently contradicting itself about healthy eating.

I see no reason why good research is any worse than having lots of experience but having to follow the wrong guidance.

If your obese or overweight you have disordered eating. I used the excuse of not wanting to be anorexic or bulimic to over eat. Actually reading something that said “ stop eating” was a revelation.I was sick of “free food” and “unlimited foods” on other diets - so the wrong mindset for someone like me.

@BIWI

😂😂😂😂. BIWI, go for it! You could make your fortune! 💵 💴 💰

DenisetheMenace · 16/01/2021 19:36

He delivers an important message but really gets up my nose. No idea why, I’m sure he’s very nice.

wowfudge · 16/01/2021 21:27

I think his message is around helping people who want to make a change to do so in the most effective and beneficial way.

Zebrasandfairytales · 16/01/2021 21:47

I can only thank him - I have struggled with losing weight all my life. I read the book and something just clicked, I have now lost five stone and am almost down to ‘just’ overweight and no longer obese. I have a way more positive relationship with food and alcohol now than I did before starting this.

Everybody is different, but this works for me and has changed my life for the better!

LickEmbysmiling · 16/01/2021 22:38

Hi, I try and leave out breakfast to fast and I'd like to do the 800 fast but I'm worried about gall stones.

Motivateinmotion · 16/01/2021 23:03

Ah gutted I missed registration, will there be any more places available?

TowandaForever · 17/01/2021 00:41

@Izzadoraduncancan

Tell me more about your photo?!

Hurtandupset2 · 17/01/2021 04:40

Looking forward to this

Hurtandupset2 · 17/01/2021 04:43

@JuliaMumsnet...How do we see this? Or is it only for a select few? I missed the zoom link and it now says registration is closed, so does that mean I can't see the questions and answers? Thanks.

AtlasPine · 17/01/2021 05:20

I’m sorry to have missed this too - will anything new available online after the event?

Lndnmummy · 17/01/2021 09:47

My question would be for those of us with work of weight to lose. I have 25kg. If I do fast800 for 12 weeks and need to break it due to the time of 12 weeks being up. How do I move forward? If I still have 10kg to lose how do I do that? Continue on the programme until all weight is lost? Or do 5:2 for a while and then back on it? Can my overall metabolism slow down if I stay on longer than for 12 weeks?
