Hello

We’re pleased to announce a webchat with Dr Michael Mosley on Tuesday 15 January, 1 - 2pm. Dr Mosley published The Fast Diet five years ago about the power of intermittent fasting. He has recently published The Fast 800 - where he updates the science and provides a programme built around an 800 calorie fasting day.

The book contains exercise plans and recipes - plus a range of tools designed to improve brain function and reducing blood pressure and inflammation.

Michael Mosley trained as a doctor before becoming a journalist and television presenter. He is the author of The Fast Diet, The 8-Week Blood Sugar Diet, and The Clever Guts Diet. He is married with four children.

Thelma Most standard diets lose muscle as well as fat.
however studies have shown that Intermittent fasting diets, like 5:2, retain muscle

This is why many bodybuilders and fitness models use IF as a standard part of their routine.

If you keep up a form of exercise like yoga\pilates and or dancing\running you don't lose muscle tone at all.

to work out how to turn a single TV programme into a marketing juggernaut Way of Eating .

Sustainability is key - do what you know you can do day in, day out, year in, year out.
So I drink tea regardless of whether I'm doing 5:2 or 16:8 or 23:1 or eating three meals in a day.
As do many of the rest of us who were on the very first 5:2 threads.

I'm type 2 (for 5 years) so interested in trying this diet to see if I can reduce or get off my medication.

I'm also bipolar, and wonder about the safety of the diet, I read once that fasting can be dangerous for people with bipolar. Is it likely to have an effect, either positive or negative on my mental health?

Hi Michael,

Your Blood Sugar book has interrupted my terrible approach to sugar. For years I was easily consuming 1200 calories of chocolate and biscuits, sometimes 1800. I don’t know how I am not diabetic.

Now I can go weeks without a bite of junk sugar, but every now and then I binge. Is this dangerous?

Hi Michael
Thank you for the 16:8 diet. I've been following it for over a year and it works so well for me, a former yo-yo dieter.

My question is - I have a small flat white on about 4 days a week. Otherwise I make the 16 hours no problem. Do I lose all the health benefits doing that? Obviously I still get the reduction in calories!

Firstly thank you, I've reversed my type 2 diabetes by following lots of your recipes and advice. I've had 3 normal blood tests as a result and my doctor is beginning to believe it is possible to reverse it. However I do think that the NHS should give the correct advice about carbs and sugar, more people would reverse it if they were.

My question is - There are some brands of cereal creeping into the supermarket shelves which state they are low sugar. Do you recommend any of them?

Hi Dr Mosley I have followed a meal replacement vlcd in the past it was my most successful attempt at losing weight due to not feeling so hungry all the time, but I did regain the weight once I went back to normal food. I am thinking the fast800 might be good in that you don't have a transition back to normal food and I know you recommend fasting days to help maintain weight but my questions are; is it harmful to do the very fast 800 (as you call it) again if you have used it or a similar vlcd in the past and regained, and secondly what more advice can you give to help prevent 'falling off the wagon' once you get to maintenance and regaining weight.

This time Iast year I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes - did the Blood Sugar Diet for around 10 weeks, lost 25 pounds and reduced my A1c from 72 to 42 - my diabetes nurse was delighted, as of course, was I. I have more weight to lose and want to do the diet again - how many 'rounds' of this diet can I do and how long should I leave in between each 'round?'. Thanks!

Hi - my question is around the new Fast800. If I do the 800 calories per day for 14 days and lose a few kilos, how would I not then gain weight by moving over to eating normally on 5 days a week and only 800 calories on 2 days? Would I not put on the weight I had lost in phase one? Sorry, am confused, would be great if you could explain this bit..., thank you 😊

Hi Michael!
If I don't eat for three + hours, I get very shakey, start sweating and feeling faint, I can't think straight and feel like I'm about to be sick or something. I reach for food (usually sugary stuff!) and then I'm ok again. I'm not diabetic (been tested)
Is this something people go through when they start fasting and then it goes away? Or is this a sign of something else?

Hello Michael I've lurked around at the edges and have read most of your books but haven't committed myself to any of your weight loss plans for any length of time.

I'm wondering if the fast 800 will suit, me as I'm not diabetic although I do seem to be quite sensitive to sugar - it can affect my sleep and I tend to get hyper or energy slumps. I'm 67, 5ft 7 and 13 stone and am healthy apart from Ibs and reflux - I more or less follow the cleverguts approach and this has helped my Ibs etc enormously

I've a tendency to stick to diets for about a month then react against them and rebound. The upshot is that I'm still overweight. I need a long term plan that I can make part of my life. I worry that my mum has Alzheimer's even though all the evidence I've seen says it's not hereditary

I have been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid (via 2 blood test 3 months apart). GP is as yet refusing to treat me. My weight starting increasing (without change in diet) middle of last year (having already lost 20lbs before it started increasing). I estimate I would be 2 stone heavier if I wasn’t 5:2ing, if, and eating below TDEE on none fast days (a bit like your fast 800 diet). I’m frustrated by my body as in reality I should be 2 stone lighter with eating regime I’ve been doing for the past 18 months. I really can’t shift any weight (as well as being shattered and holding) Do you have any advice please?

BTW I have all your books and love your TV programmes. You’re very watchable and make diet science accessible. Thank you!

I’m lazy. Between working 70 hours a week and moving house my energy levels are pretty low. Are there any brands of pre-made shakes that you’re not opposed to for the plan?

Please help! I have a person I want to help with their weight who can’t exercise due to disability. I think they would struggle to fast. Are there any other methods they could use to lose weight?
