Webchat with John McDonnell MP, Shadow Chancellor, Tuesday 18 September at 11am

We’re very pleased to announce a webchat with the Shadow Chancellor, John McDonnell, this Tuesday 18 September at 11am.

John has been Labour MP for Hayes and Harlington since 1997. Born in Liverpool, he studied at night school while working before going to university. He went on to work as a union official and in local government at the GLC and at Camden Council. He campaigned for Jeremy Corbyn to win the Labour leadership in 2015 and has been Shadow Chancellor since then.

He describes his vision for the UK economy as ‘socialism with an iPad’, centred around research, investment and ‘alternative forms of ownership and control’ such as nationalisation, co-operatives, and locally-owned enterprises. He has proved a controversial figure in some quarters, with particular attention paid to his 2003 remarks about the IRA, for which he apologised. He has described Labour’s anti-semitism row as a low point, and has been quoted as saying ‘we have got to sort this out’.

Please do join the chat on Tuesday at 11am, or if you can’t make it, leave a question here in advance.

We’re expecting this to be a busy webchat, so only existing Mumsnet users are able to post on this thread. Apologies to anyone new who can’t post - please stick around, we’ve got lots of other things coming up Grin

As always, please remember our webchat guidelines - one question per user, follow-ups only if there’s time and most questions have been answered and please keep it civil. Also if one topic is overwhelmingly dominating a discussion with a guest, mods might request that people don't continue to post what's effectively the same question or point. Rest assured we will ALWAYS let the guest know that it's an area of concern to multiple users and will encourage them to engage with those questions.

Many thanks.

Why do you think the WEP will be any use, @CertainHalfDesertedStreets? They've nailed their colours too the mast already.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 18/09/2018 20:34

I think they nailed them pretty badly and have now taken them down for a rethink.

And I think we have a better chance of making a difference there.

And I think once one party goes others will follow.

And I'm right here so no need to @ me Smile

AdaColeman · 18/09/2018 21:01

Consensus must be one of the words that have changed meaning while I wasn't looking. It now seems to mean "Listen up Girlies, from now on you do and think what you are told to, and no talking in the ranks at the back there!"

You've got to admire the man, the web chat was a master class in evasive answers and half baked theories, smoothly presented with a just touch of patronising humour.

On the bright side, he really really loves his Mum, and of course he knew we would like that, us being mums and all.

Happityhap · 18/09/2018 21:42

I think other parties will have no difficulty in ignoring whatever WEP chooses to do or say.

FloPen · 18/09/2018 21:44

For me the middle ages ended mid 16th century along with the Renaissance.
well, that's just wrong. So the Renaissance ended in the mid 16th century as well? Or do you mean it's followed by the Renaissance? And the Middle Ages ended at the end of the 15th century.

Mary's son James, who succeeded the quisling Elizabeth I, never forgot his mother and had her body exhumed and placed in the vault of Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey. Rightly so

Quisling? How come? James was 21 when his mother died and showed no great attachment to her.

WeWantJustice · 18/09/2018 21:48

I wonder if he's been put on Terfblocker as punishment for not denouncing any questioning of the existence of laydeepeen as transphobic bigotry?

When men tell women that they want consensus about men's rights and women's rights, what they mean is that they want men's rights to be prioritised and for women to nod and pretend that means that all is right in the world.

Mervix Grin

I would have love to seen John answer the question "Do women have penises?" because it's such an obvious twist of reality and biology to say they do.

I would also love to know what a lot of these MPs privately think the answer to that question is. I'm sure most of them are just toeing the woke-bro line.

Hazardswan · 18/09/2018 22:22

Vagina is a magina.
Fallopian tubes are mallopian mubes (mubes are not to be mixed up with moobs).
Ovaries are not mvaries as that will be silly they are brovaries in solidarity with men. Because men having ovaries is not enough solidarity. Always for the solidarity

missed my calling as a dude bro I'd be magic at it

Hi, John. Please be aware that millions of women support statutory declaration and improvements to the GRA. As the recent unanimous vote at TUC shows, women trade unionists, cis and trans, stand in sisterly solidarity with the trans community. We totally agree with Jeremy, Dawn and the NEC that trans women are women. Please do not let the views of a fingerful of bigots mislead you on this. As Socialists we are tribunes of the oppressed. As trade unionists we know that an injury to one is an injury to all.

Trans women are trans women and that's perfectly fine, they are equally worthy without being biological women.

Everybody is different and that's okay. I'ln fact let's celebrate difference otherwise we'd all be the same and that's boring.

AlphaJuno · 18/09/2018 23:05

Hi John. Do you think that Theresa May and the Tories incompetent handling of Brexit negotiations and the inevitable fall out (it seems no one will be happy with any possible outcome) will ultimately pave the way for a labour government and how do you and JC plan to unite the party and lead the country going forward? Thanks.

ToeToToe · 18/09/2018 23:11

Hi, John. Please be aware that millions of women support statutory declaration and improvements to the GRA.

Well, that's a bit of a stretch.

YouGov polls (commissioned by Pink News) have shown that only 18% of the general population support self ID.

Happityhap · 18/09/2018 23:21

the recent unanimous vote at TUC

without asking the views of most trade union members.

tobee · 18/09/2018 23:24

Speak for yourself @Delendaest

Bloody hell - I haven't seen Deirdre/Dave Spart since the '80s.
