Author Marian Keyes is returning to Mumsnet on Thursday 18th February between 9 and 10pm. Marian’s last visit was a huge success and we’re delighted that she’s agreed to join us this time for an evening webchat, to tell us about her new non-fiction book.

Making it up as I go along presents Marian’s funny, candid and heartfelt observations on modern life. It’s her third collection of essays (her first to be written in the twitter era) and shares her thoughts on the tricky business of being a woman in today’s demanding world.

Come and chat to Marian on Thursday 18th Feb between 9 and 10pm or if you're unable to join us at that time, post up your questions for Marian in advance on this thread.

I have read every book except the new one and without fail have enjoyed them all. Thank you for all your wonderful stories!

My question is, if you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be? But you can't have idris Elba because he's mine :o

RocketQueen79 · 15/02/2016 16:42

I'd like to thank Marian for getting me in to reading. I've loved every single book so far but Rachel's Holiday is my favourite. Although I am quite lazy these days and get Mr Audible to read books to me.

My question is:

I've you could acquire one skill without having to do an ounce of training, what would it be? e.g. Sugarcraft, karate, bricklaying

Luc28 · 15/02/2016 16:43

Are any of your book characters or story lines 'inspired' by your real life friends or family or totally fictional?

angie95 · 15/02/2016 18:15

Hi.Marian, I love all your books. My question is, if you had to pick a different time period, which would it be?
Thanks

I love all your books and you strike me as a cool 'City Chick' with your love of beauty products and fab shoes but have you ever fancied having a go at 'The good life', growing your own veggies and keeping chickens?

I love love love your work!
My question:
Did you have a Mammy like Mammy Walsh?

Sidge · 15/02/2016 20:09

I absolutely love Marian's books and have done for years. Anyone that refers to them as 'chick lit' is doing them a disservice IMO, they're far more intelligent and gritty than that, dealing with some really big issues.

My question would be - who would be your Dinner Party 5? The 5 guests, dead or alive, that you'd have round?

ChessieFL · 15/02/2016 20:38

My question is - will there be another Walsh book? Claire's daughter is old enough to get her own book now!

Love your books. One of the few authors I read every single book. Your saved by cake book struck a massive chord with both me and a friend.

My question is also will there be anymore Walsh family books? We really need to know how they are getting on!

Wagglebees · 17/02/2016 13:03

Oh my goodness I LOVE Marian! Star

Just place marking in case I don't think of a suitably fabulous question.

Cocolepew · 17/02/2016 13:09

Oh I love you.
Question, would you do Strictly if asked and who would you want to be partnered with?

CakeNinja · 17/02/2016 13:46

YESSSSS!!
I first got into reading 'big books' as a 13/14 year old as my mum would pass them on to me. The first one was Lucy Sullivan is getting married and it's still one of my absolute favourites, along with Watermelon (dd1s middle name is Kate!).

I can't think of a good question but I'm so thankful your books were the ones I read first as it encouraged me to continue reading - it's still my favourite thing now. Thankyou :)

BertPuttocks · 17/02/2016 14:11

Hi Marian.

My question is:

If you could have just one of your books turned into a film, which one would you choose and who would you want in the main roles?

Thanks! :)

MrFMercury · 17/02/2016 15:01

Hi Marian :) I annoy you on Twitter quite a bit I'm afraid but you crack me up be it in a book or 140 characters.
My question: have you ever wanted to have a crack at a totally different style of writing, a murder mystery perhaps?
P.S please come do a book signing in Sheffield;)

Sallystyle · 17/02/2016 17:58

Marian! I adore you and your books. Dh does too, we especially like Rachel's Holiday.

My question- a light and fluffy one! Did you always want to be a writer? and if you couldn't be a writer what career do you think you would have had instead?

LittleBootsTheBabe · 17/02/2016 18:04

Marian, you are awesome. That is all.
I've gone & got a moony look on my face now.
Marian, do you have a favourite expression, I don't necessarily mean an expression you often use, an expression that makes you chuckle, like "mad as a box of frogs"?

BellaVida · 17/02/2016 18:11

I have only ever read multiple works by one author, Marian Keyes. No other style has really gripped me in the same way- a witty fusion of escapism and the realities of life as a woman!

Your books are undoubtedly funny, but there are glimpses of darkness in some of the themes. Do you think that your novel writing helps you deal with some of your own issues?

Thank you.

gleekster · 17/02/2016 18:21

Marian you are a Goddess and I have read every single one of your books. I recently gave No Dress Rehearsal to my lovely aunt as she lay dying in hospital (long term terminal illness) and it gave her some comfort and some giggles before she died. Thanks so much for all the laughter and the tears.

I would like to know when you are going to take part in Strictly Grin

Madhairday · 17/02/2016 18:23

HI Marian,

My question is, what advice would you give to an aspiring author just beginning to explore sending to agents and publishers and receiving inevitable 'no thanks' emails? What was your story of getting into published writing? Thanks.

Wagglebees · 17/02/2016 19:50

What are your very favourite shoes or boots and why? Please and thank you. :)

Like lots of people you've been a real comfort and inspiration to me at various tough times in my life. I've just had a clear out of books and all of the ones by you were the first to go into the 'Definitely Keeping' pile. They're the type of books that soothe your heart as soon as you clap eyes o them again. Thank you very much for writing. x

Wagglebees · 17/02/2016 19:51

^ *like lots of people have already said

RozTheSchnoz · 17/02/2016 20:07

Hi Marian. HUGE fan here. Your books are so interesting and entertaining. I hope you are happy and free of dark times.
My question is: what would it take for you to be persuaded to do Strictly? They get you on the Friday panel but you would be so brilliant on the show. Imagine if you were paired with anyone but Pasha?!

Fitzers · 17/02/2016 20:43

I am a big fan of your writing and have read all your novels. Rachel's Holiday is my favourite as it really resonated with me at the stage of life I was at when it came out.

I also really loved Saved by Cake, I know that the book was born out of dealing with some dark times and I thought how you discussed that in the book was so open and honest and I've had a lot of fun with the recipes, so thank you! I also find a lot of solace in cooking and baking and I was just wondering if that's something you still have time to do now and again and if you might publish another baking book at some stage?
