Are your DC mad about Greg Heffley? Now is their chance to have all their Diary of a Wimpy Kid questions answered.

November marks the release of the tenth novel in the DOAWK series and we're very excited to announce that world-renowned author Jeff Kinney will be joining us for a live webchat on Thursday 19th November from 6.15-7pm.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School follows Greg Heffley as he goes on a weeklong field trip to a farm and deals with a generation gap between the kids and their chaperones. With tension building inside and outside the Heffley home, will Greg find a way to survive? Or is going 'old school' just too hard for a kid like Greg?

Jeff Kinney's work has been widely praised for its ability to turn even the most reluctant readers on to books. The Wimpy Kid books are 50% comic-strip, 50% novel and 100% hilarious. As a result of the impact and success of these books Jeff Kinney has been named one of Time magazine's most influential people in the world.

Join us with your DC on Thursday 19 Nov at 6:15, or if you can't make it, leave a question below.

@angie95

Hi Jeff, I have read all your books, as my daughter loves them and so do I, they are so funny. Are your characters situations based on real events,?

Thank you! Most of the situations in the books have happened in one sense or another. Everything is put through the fiction blender and magnified for comic effect!

Hi, my grandson loves all the Wimpy Kid books and read the latest one all in one go. His question is if you could be one of the characters in your books who would you be? Grandson would be Manny.

That's great! If I could be a character I think I'd have to choose Greg. He's the most like me!

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

@Kewcumber

DS (10 this month) says how old is Greg going to get before you have to give up the books... does he have Diary of a Wimpy Young Man to look forward to when he's older?

I don't think Greg will ever age! He (and Manny) should stay the same age forever!

Hi Jeff, my 8 year old daughter is a massive fan of yours my question is, I struggle to get her to read other books except for wimpy kid, she rereads them all the time (as you can imagine we are looking forward to the new one!) - what other children's authors do you admire that you would recommend for her to try or do you have any favourite children's stories?

Her question is 'where do you get your ideas from as they are funny'from Isla age 8

thank you she will be very happy if you can say Hi to her!

this is the best webchat MN have ever done!

I think David Walliams is brilliant. Also Andy Griffiths from Australia!

I'm glad your daughter likes my work! Hello Isla!

I don't know how the ideas come, but I wish I could make them come faster!

  1. My book wasn't rejected, but when I tried to become a newspaper cartoonist, I didn't have any success!
  1. I wanted to be a part of the film universe, but in the background. I ended up in the foreground. I've learned that I'm no actor!
  1. I started to love writing when I started doing a cartoon for the school paper in college!

@HBSY7

A UK School Librarian here with 3 q.s from our very enthusastic Y7s:
  1. Did you get rejected the first time you wrote a book Sad?
  1. What made you want to have a part in the films of Diary of a Wimpy Kid?
  1. How old were you when you started your love of writing?

Hi, really pleased you arrived. We were waiting for you.

This is my second question.

Where do you do your writing?

Sam

JeffKinney · 19/11/2015 18:35

@ARichVernacular

Okay, my son's question is "in which episode did the kids make Rowley eat the cheese?" Confused

I hope this makes more sense to you!

That happened in the first book! Although I never actually SAY it!

My 10 year old son doesn't have a question, but wanted me to tell you that he loves the Wimpy Kid books.

They also seem to have taken on "cheesetouch" and use that instead of saying "tig" Grin

@longesteverlurker

I have finally registered after 10 years of lurking because my 10 yr old dd wants to ask you a question;

are your main characters (e.g.Greg) based on you or people you know/met/ seen

She is a huge fan of your books and rereads them constantly.

My question is - Do you write your books all in one flowing process or do you have lots of different ideas that you shuffle around to get to a final result?

Thanks for registering! The books are fiction but there are lots of bits and piece of people I know in them! I spend about a month just writing jokes, and then I string everything together into a narrative!

Hi Jeff, my 10 year old daughter's favourite subject at school is creative writing and she's a massive fan of your books, her question for you is :

What gave you the inspiration for Diary of a Wimpy Kid and have you loved creative writing since you were a kid Smile

Inspiration came from failure to become a newspaper cartoonist! I love creative writing but I do struggle with it. I don't like writing but I like having written!

@Madamedupin

Hi My 8 yr old DS LOVES the books and the films - his question is, when Greg grows up, what kind of job do you think he might do? He's terribly excited about this and agonised over what to ask! Thanks!

I think Greg would be an unhappy, low-level worker. Greg is his own worst enemy!

@mrsronswanson

Hi, I really enjoy the books myself as there is a lot of humour to appreciate in them as a grown up. I find the mom character very appealing, with all the parenting techniques she tries. Is she based on anyone in real life?

Thank you! I actually wrote the books for grown-ups to begin with. Yes, Mom is good-hearted. She's based on all of the moms I know, including mine and my wife!

My DS is 9 today and has just unwrapped the new book, he's very excited to read it!

He'd like to ask what inspires you to write your books (but he did say he bets you get asked that a lot!)

Great, thanks for getting the new book! I'm inspired these days by kids... I want to make them laugh!

@LadyintheRadiator

My son is 8 and loves all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. He reads them on rotation and when he's not reading them he's talking about them.

He'd like to ask Jeff which of the books is his favourite? Who is his favourite character? And lastly - how many Wimpy Kid books will you write?

Thank you Smile

Thank you! My favourite is The Long Haul... I think it's the best written! I hope to write ten more!

Hello Jeff

My 10 year old loves your books. And we love Rowley. What do you think the future holds for him?

JeffKinney · 19/11/2015 18:42

@Maibakai

Hi Jeff! My 8yo son loves reading your books and he journals and doodles cartoons all the time. We are REALLY looking forward to the live webchat later on. He'd like to know more about you, and asks... "If you were a superhero, which super power would you choose to have and why?" Thank you for helping him transition into reading novels. I think that the cartoons helped so much!

Thank you! And thanks for waiting! If I was a superhero, I'd go with flight! Say hi to your son!

@hermancakedestroyer

Hi Jeff, my 10 yo son absolutely loves your books. He was absolutely thrilled to hear that you were appearing on mumsnet and said 'I've got so much to ask him!!' To enable you to have the time to answer other people's questions as well I asked him to chose one question. He says he also loves writing books and have you got any top tips for openings to books to get the reader interested from the start?

Thank you so much for your lovely books so far - you have made choosing my son's birthday presents and Christmas presents a breeze!

That's great! I think you really have to grab the reader with something unusual or action-based. You're trying to get the reader to turn the page! I'm so glad he likes the books and that you give books as presents!
