Are your DC mad about Greg Heffley? Now is their chance to have all their Diary of a Wimpy Kid questions answered.

November marks the release of the tenth novel in the DOAWK series and we're very excited to announce that world-renowned author Jeff Kinney will be joining us for a live webchat on Thursday 19th November from 6.15-7pm.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School follows Greg Heffley as he goes on a weeklong field trip to a farm and deals with a generation gap between the kids and their chaperones. With tension building inside and outside the Heffley home, will Greg find a way to survive? Or is going 'old school' just too hard for a kid like Greg?

Jeff Kinney's work has been widely praised for its ability to turn even the most reluctant readers on to books. The Wimpy Kid books are 50% comic-strip, 50% novel and 100% hilarious. As a result of the impact and success of these books Jeff Kinney has been named one of Time magazine's most influential people in the world.

Join us with your DC on Thursday 19 Nov at 6:15, or if you can't make it, leave a question below.

Hi Jeff, my 10 yo son absolutely loves your books. He was absolutely thrilled to hear that you were appearing on mumsnet and said 'I've got so much to ask him!!' To enable you to have the time to answer other people's questions as well I asked him to chose one question. He says he also loves writing books and have you got any top tips for openings to books to get the reader interested from the start?

Thank you so much for your lovely books so far - you have made choosing my son's birthday presents and Christmas presents a breeze!

Stuffofawesome · 19/11/2015 15:53

Thank you for the genius of the cheese touch.
My dad would like to know which of your books you think is funniest?

Stuffofawesome · 19/11/2015 15:54

Dd not dad!

Maybemable · 19/11/2015 16:18

My 10 year old daughter Martha, wants to know who your favourite DOAWK character is? And which of the books is your favourite?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/11/2015 16:21

Hello Jeff. My son would like to know why somebody doesn't put on gloves, move the cheese and then throw the gloves away?

Thank you for writing Wimpy Kid- it's brilliant.

reallyneedmoresleep · 19/11/2015 16:48

Hello. I am a teacher of a year 3 & 4 class - we love the wimpy kids books and think they are hilarious.

Our best questions are:

  1. Will Greg ever get on with his brothers?
  2. How old were you when you started writing books?
  3. What do you do when you are stuck for ideas?

Thank you!

AlbusPotter · 19/11/2015 17:23

I have a question!! What does the pet pig get up to while Greg is not writing in his diary? Hmm From my daughter age 9- She came to see you Jeff in 2013 when Hard Luck was published at an event in Birmingham UK- it was brilliant!

Hi Jeff this is Sam, my mum has namechanged for this.

I am 9 years old and my favourite character is Roderick because I like the way he bugs his brother.

I would like to know; are your stories based on your own experiences?

Thanks, Sam

SeptemberSarah · 19/11/2015 17:56

Hi Jeff
My 8 year old son is a massive fan of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He was given a boxset of your books last Christmas and they triggered his love of reading - so thank you!

His question is: "How do you come up with the names of your characters?"

Thank you Smile

Chilimama · 19/11/2015 18:16

Hi Jeff

I love your boooookkkksssss!!! I have read every book over and over again and really loved Old School.

My question is what will the next book be? plus I would like to know how to get my own book published because I've written lots of comic books.

TinaMumsnet · 19/11/2015 18:20

Hi Jeff,
Welcome to Mumsnet! We’re so pleased that you’re able to join us tonight. There are loads of great questions on the thread already but I'd like to kick off with the questions we ask all the authors that join us:

What childhood book most inspired you?
What would be the first piece of advice you would give to anyone attempting to write fiction?
What would be the first piece of advice you would give to anyone attempting to write fiction?
And the best you've received?

Over to you...

Where can I find Jeff's answers?

JeffKinney · 19/11/2015 18:22

@Stillnoidea

All of my kids are wimpy kid fans. We'd like to ask:

Greg has had a lot of embarrassing moments: what's your most cringeworthy memory?

I've got lots! I actually used to hide from my swimteam instructor in the locker room, just like Greg. I'd wrap myself up in toilet paper to stay warm!

@PirateSmile

I want to thank you for all the brilliant books my two ds have both enjoyed. My ds have both been keen on reading from an early age and I think that's down to finding things they enjoy reading, in particular the Wimpy Kid books.

I haven't read the books myself but I have seen the film and I think that the Rowley and his mum dancing scene is one of the funniest things I've ever watched in a kids' film. Was that in the book or just for the film?

Thank you!! I'm really glad your sons like my books! The Rowley dancing scene was just for the films, but I wish I had thought to put it into the books!

hi we would like to know, 'where do you get your fab ideas from?'

I take lots of long walks! Sometimes the ideas come, sometimes they don't!

Hi Jeff
My 8yo daughter is crazy about Wimpy Kid! In fact we were just watching the movie yesterday after school ! (Just a teeny bit) Blush The character is like the best is Rodrik! He's absolutely funny!

My questions are:
Are any of Greg's experiences really your own life experiences? Which one do you find the most hilarious?
How old could Greg grow up to be by the end of the series? It would be interesting to see if he actually fulfils his dreams to be a celebrity Grin

Thanks

AlbusPotter · 19/11/2015 18:25

hi Jeff! im the one who asked the question about the pig! im annabel

JeffKinney · 19/11/2015 18:25

@Shakey15000

Hi Jeff Smile

My son loves your books. I have a question-

I've an idea for a series of children's books, have written the first two. What's the best nugget of advice you could give me before I throw myself to the wolves and submit it to an agent?

Thanks

My best advice is for you to show your work to as many people that you can find who will give your their honest, unfiltered feedback. If you show it to your relatives they'll tell you they love it no matter what. So find some people who can tell you what they really think. That'll help you hone the work!

Oh and my son asks- In The Long Haul, why did Greg want to go to Soak Central? (?!)

Who wouldn't want to go to a water park?

Hi Jeff, My DD is a big fan of your books. She would like to know whether you have any plans for a book where a girl is the main character. Thanks!

I've thought about that but I'm not sure I could write a credible female character! I'd like to try, though... I think it's time to spread my wings!
