Meryl, what a treat!

Very much looking forward to seeing your new film.

My question is a light hearted one- If you were to be stuck in a elevator with anyone, who would it be?

Thank you!

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 08/10/2015 13:20

Hi Meryl, I just wanted to say my favourite play & film is Dancing at Lunesa, your Donegal accent was really good in it (I'm a Donegal girl Grin how did you pick up the accent so well? Was there anyone in particular you listened to? And was that the first play of Friels you had come across? I love so many of your films, you really are a great role model for women. Thanks Smile

@NickNackNooToYou

Hi Meryl

It's brilliant that you have come to chat with us - thank you Totally star struck

My question is do the film roles you take change you as a person, just as life events do? Which one has changed/affected you the most?

Thank you StarBrewCakeFlowers

I think that I'm drawn to material that already lives inside me in some part of me - I'm drawn to women who have something to say, that I understand myself. There are exceptions, like Death Becomes Her - although that also had something that I wanted to say about women's obsession with how they look, staying young and the distortion of that in society.

Hi from Germany!
My question is about the project you were supposed to do with Bob de Niro - The Good House? Is this still going to happen? Loved the book!

Anyway, I'm a huge admirer - love your work and what you do for girls and women around the world! Thanks!

ShowMeSaturn · 08/10/2015 13:23

Hello Meryl,

I'd like to ask if you might consider acting on stage in the UK in the near future, touring regional theatres rather than just London.

Thankyou!

MerylStreep · 08/10/2015 13:23

@Devora

Wow, what a coup MN Grin. I won't be able to be at the webchat because I will be at a screening of Suffragette.

Here's my question: Sylvia or Emmeline Pankhurst, which gets your vote?

I think I pick Emmeline, because I know more about her, and have looked more deeply at her life - although Sylvia's lifelong dedication to to issues of poverty is really inspiring. Sometimes I think public life can push you to extremes that are not good for you: Emmeline was repeatedly imprisoned and became ill as a result of that. And sometimes people are driven crazy by the pressures of that kind of leadership role. I don't know if I'd want to be either one of them, or have the stamina or bravery to jeopardise everything that I know.

Firstly Hurrah! for you, you've given so many touching and authentic perfornmaces.
I wonder, given the general attitude to ageing women in Hollywood, how you have felt about this and how you've managed to forge a career as a woman over forty, and combine that with family life. I am over forty, I want to see films that portray the things I am experiencing (juggling elderly parent and small children etc). But there are so few older women given meaty realistic roles.

It would be my husband, because in a way I AM stuck in an elevator with him!

Sorry for typos. I can spell, honestly. Computer slow as a slug today.

mynamemolly · 08/10/2015 13:24

Hello,
My question is what have been your top three favourite roles of yours?
Also, while I'm here I just want to say i'm a huge fan and thank you for being a great inspiration!
With love, Molly xxx

coconutmidler22 · 08/10/2015 13:24

Hi Meryl, first I want to start off and say that you an INCREDIBLE actress and one of my favorites.

My question is, what role are you most proud of playing, and why? (How did it inspire you?)

NobleStripes · 08/10/2015 13:25

Hi Meryl urk I'm a -uh- fan from the Philippines, and -ah- I think you're one of the greatest actresses that I have ever ever watched on cinema and television. I hope that Filipino fans will get noticed by you, but it seems to be highly impossible to catch your attention and I'm on the verge of giving up my hopes.

xxx ????

@BitOfFun

This is amazing, I so admire Meryl's work!

Meryl, your ear for accents is incredible- which one have you found the hardest to master, and do you find yourself subconsciously slipping into the speech patterns of people you are talking to? Grin

My children used to tell me when I was on the phone with people, they could tell where the person was from, because I would sort of pick up the lilt or the sound of their voice. They would relentlessly make fun of me, but that is the role of children. And I think I do pick things up. I'm better at remaining American here than I used to be!

Hi Meryl,

Hello from Ireland (via Mumsnet) my question is, mosts actors say they hating watching themselves on screen, do you and more importantly does you daughter hate you watching her on screen? :)

Just to add - the toughest, really, was Lindy Chamberlain, the character in A Cry in the Dark, which is New Zealand and slightly different from Australian. Every American thinks they can do it, because they can do Australian, but every subtlety was different, and important to me, because it made her an outsider in Australia where she was tried.

Hi meryl!!
What's jack Nicholson like to work with?
I love your work , you are an inspiration to myself and my daughter.

beckyfalls · 08/10/2015 13:28

Can you put my husband out of his misery? He's been told that in the film "The French Lieutenant's Woman", a stunt man took your place at the end of the pier - true or false?

hookedonamoonagedaydreem · 08/10/2015 13:28

Hello Meryl,

I had no idea that you had 4 children!

You always appear so calm and together, do you have any tips on keeping calm and together when you have 4 children? I have x4 DC's and often feel harassed and stressed at the moment. They are very young still though, oldest is 8.

mynamemolly · 08/10/2015 13:28

Hello Queen Meryl!

This is a bit of a silly one- but if you could have any superhero power, what would you choose and why? :)

I'm a HUGE fan and can't wait to see Suffragette. I recently saw Ricki and the Flash by myself, and was singing along at the back of the cinema!

MerylStreep · 08/10/2015 13:29

@LumpySpacedPrincess

Hi Meryl, you recently described yourself as a humanist as opposed to a feminist and I wondered why. I'm a feminist because it's females as a group who are treated unfairly, not all humans, so I feel it's right to help the oppressed group.

So that's my question, are you a feminist? Smile

Yes, I recently described myself as a humanist, but I didn't describe myself as a humanist as opposed to a feminist. I am of course a feminist, and the actions of my life have been defined by that stance - all my life, from the time I woke up. But I feel we have to declare ourselves in support of the whole human family, because different people are oppressed in different ways, and we have to listen and respond to all of it. This is something a mother understands, deeply, because you work on behalf of everybody in the family.

I dispute that Kiwi accents are hard!! Just remember we only have one vowel, the "U"

Shakey15000 · 08/10/2015 13:30

Quick 2nd question (might have missed my non-cheeky first one)

Can I have a bit part in your next movie? well, you never know!

Grin
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/10/2015 13:31

slug - and the ih for an eh - my favourite Kiwi comment from a client was "I'm sorry I'm running late, I'm in Tisco at the chickout". Grin

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 08/10/2015 13:31

In my tale to the grandkids she'll have offered me a bit part but I've had to graciously decline as I wouldn't want to put her under any obligation. Grin
