Labour leadership hustings - Webchat with Andy Burnham, Thursday 30 July, 2pm

Hello

We’re pleased to announce the final webchat in our Labour leadership hustings series. Andy Burnham will be joining us for a webchat on Thursday 30 July at 2pm.

Andy was elected MP for Leigh in 2001. In Government, he was Secretary of State for Health, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Chief Secretary to the Treasury. He was also Shadow Health Secretary under Ed Miliband’s leadership (and in that role ).

During the heated leadership campaign, Andy has warned that Labour is becoming 'frightened by its own shadow' and has had to fight back against allegations of sexism, due to a row about remarks made by one of his supporters.

Please do join us on Thursday at 2pm if you can, or post a question for Andy here in advance if you can’t.

Labour leadership voting is open until Thursday 10 September and the ballot results will be released on Saturday 12 September.

Thanks

MNHQ

Hello Andy

All the other candidates think that Liz and Yvette have been on the end of damaging sexist attitudes during the leadership contest. Do you agree?

Hi Andy

We've just had a poll showing Jeremy Corbyn in the lead, you've just released a private poll showing you're in the lead and Yvette Cooper has a poll showing - surprise! - she's in the lead.

What is the point of these polls?

It feels like a waste of time to me. Isn't there something you'd rather be doing than wasting your time and money on these types of polls?

Andy, thank you for supporting Mumsnet's miscarriage campaign, it's a very emotional issue for lots of MNers.

It feels like there are lots of patient groups trying to make changes to aspects of the NHS and a lot of the issues are around basic qualities like empathy and compassion.

If you were a campaigner trying to change attitudes in your local NHS services, what's the first thing or the first few things you would do? What are your tips for getting the NHS to sit up and take notice of 'soft' care issues like this?

I'm going to ask the same question i asked already, that the others failed to answer

Do you think the proposed coup if JC wins is a good example of democratic process?

A little aside but its amazing how i became very ill from teenage years (leading to severe disability), with a cause not being diagnosed until my very late twenties. Yet without being young enough for the evil hpv vaccine. Weird, eh. But then i had the mmr, so i guess that is to blame for my asd?

Sorry hq, i probably shouldnt have risen to that Blush
Its just that some people arent as 'well' as others. Its shit, but blaming vaccines etc is imo a form of disabilism. "Well my daughter isnt like those people, she couldnt possibly be Just Ill"

Andy, 3/5 of lone parents do not receive 1 penny in maintenance.

3/5. The majority. We are not talking about LP's who have shared care here, or who are widowed, we are talking about LP's who have sole care and control of their children, with a Non Resident Parent still living somewhere, who should be getting maintenance and aren't.

This is in spite of the fact that the CSA was set up nearly thirty years ago to force financially abusive parents, to support their own flesh and blood.

The CSA has been a total and complete joke and the Tory/ LibDem coalition made sure that it will become even less of an option by deciding that Resident Parents who are being financially abused by NRPs, cannot use the CSA without paying £100.

Even where resident parents do get maintenance, the sums involved are laughably small - my XP pays £5 a week for 2 children (and the only reason he does, is because the CSA take it directly from his wages. If his wages go up, his maintenance payments don't, unless I pay £100 to get the CSA to re-calculate. I have to pay the charge, he doesn't. How come?)

Research shows that 5 years after a divorce or relationship breakdown where children are involved, women on average have far less disposable income than they did when married, while men on average, have far more. This is because mothers spend far more of their income on their children and fathers are allowed to financially abuse their children without anyone recognising it as abuse.

Do you think this situation is right and proper and what are your plans, if any, to tackle it?

I am asking the same question I asked the others - no reply so far.

I am appalled by religious discrimination in the state funded education sector. Why should a child be turned down for a place at their local state funded school where all their nursery friends are going due purely to the religion of their parents?

In this climate of fear of extremism, shouldn't we be encouraging religious integration in education rather than segregation?

To put it in a nutshell, what is the point of the Equalities act 2010 if state funded education is exempt from it?

I'm curious to know what you think about all the 'sexy eyes'/Bambi stuff.

Hope you don't think it's rude to ask, but I wondered whether it gives you a bit of insight into how female politicians are scrutinised for their looks.... or not?

Thanks

beyond - what are you snorting for? Isn't it obvious that anything that happens within 6 months of a vaccination MUST have been caused by the vaccination?

MNHQ has this webchat been abandoned?

It's not until 2 pm.

I guess the snort is because beyondMNHQ and I are fed up with the vaccine questions. I even backed you up earlier. You are OTT and this Web chat is about more than your agenda.

It certainly appears abandoned by everyone bar the new posters...?

No! Justine and team are en route to Andy's office right now.

We'll see if we can do some back-end trickery to stop the derailing - thanks for the reports

Andy what can be done to reduce sexism and gender stereotyping in advertising to children? I strongly believe this damages society at a similar level to the advertising of fast food to children, which the ASA has powers to stop.

Hello,
Why do you think we lost so drastically last election and what will you do differently to avoid being slaughtered again?
