Labour leadership hustings - Webchat with Andy Burnham, Thursday 30 July, 2pm

Hello

We’re pleased to announce the final webchat in our Labour leadership hustings series. Andy Burnham will be joining us for a webchat on Thursday 30 July at 2pm.

Andy was elected MP for Leigh in 2001. In Government, he was Secretary of State for Health, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Chief Secretary to the Treasury. He was also Shadow Health Secretary under Ed Miliband’s leadership (and in that role ).

During the heated leadership campaign, Andy has warned that Labour is becoming 'frightened by its own shadow' and has had to fight back against allegations of sexism, due to a row about remarks made by one of his supporters.

Please do join us on Thursday at 2pm if you can, or post a question for Andy here in advance if you can’t.

Labour leadership voting is open until Thursday 10 September and the ballot results will be released on Saturday 12 September.

Thanks

MNHQ

Dear Andy, we met way back in 2012 with families whose daughters had been injured by the HPV vaccines. Pat McFadden, MP was there with us. You showed great concern at the time at how this vaccine was harming many of our teenagers up and down the country. We need you to show this same concern now as many more young girls have become seriously ill following HPV vaccination. How many more have to suffer before someone takes this seriously and investigates why this is happening? There are only so many times you can call this a "coincidence".

Dear Andy, please can you help. There are hundreds if not thousands of girls who are currently suffering the side effects of the HPV vaccine. We are constantly lied to, but more importantly these poor girls are denied assessment, treatment and understanding. The extent of the scandal is beyond comprehension. My daughter suffers from seizures. Please let this be a warning to other parents. We need someone to start listening urgently and start to help the girls as is now happening in Japan and Denmark. Please please help. These girls have already had the best part of their teenage years ripped away from them. They deserve more then this.

My daughter has been injured by the HPV vaccine and suffers from CRPS as a result. I would also like to know if the government is prepared to investigate the adverse reactions that so many of our children seem to be suffering with.

Hi Andy, my daughter had the HPV vaccination at school and now suffers daily with serious medical conditions. My question to you is will you support a thorough safety review of this vaccination to stop other girls being put through the same hardship? My daughter and many others need the help of the NHS along with research into the medical issues so they can be treated and get their lives back.

Hi, my daughter has been ill for the last 5 1/2 years after having the cevarix vaccine. I would like to ask what can be done to help her and the many other girls who have been affected by the HPV vaccines?

Hi Andy, It seems no one is wanting to tackle the huge problems with the CSA and the unfair charges for resident parents who are being punished for non resident parents choosing not to pay maintenance.

What can be done to help single parents get the correct child maintenance when the non resident parents are self employed and are able to get away with paying nothing despite having assets?

Hi Andy my question to you is my daughter along with countless others has been left with chronic debilitating illness since having a adverse reaction to HPV vaccine. We have fought for 4 years now to try to find support with health needs and education none successful. So much so that we now find ourselves totally outcast. I therefore ask you to investigate the effects that young people have suffered and support us to have quality medical and educational support not to be left behind as is the way at present.

HPV VACCINE ***
My daughter had an adverse reaction 24 hours after receiving the HPV vaccine, which landed her in HDU suffering from seizures. She has been absent from school for over 1 year. Will there be an investigation regarding the number of girls injured after receiving this vaccine? I need to know the truth why this is happening to girls all over the UK and abroad. Thank you

Hi Andy

I would like to know what your thoughts and plans are for giving support to young girls whose lives have been changed due to ill health since having the HPV vaccine? Will they be entitled to vaccine damage compensation? What about support for them to try and continue their education? I also believe the medical profession need to be educated on recognising that the symptoms patients present to them , could be linked to the vaccine. My daughter is one of these girls and for the last 3 years life has been a struggle not only for her, but her family too. Thank you.

Why has this particular webcast and its proposed questions now been dominated by posters concerned about the HPV vaccine?

Report
SteveCA7 · 30/07/2015 08:10

Andy,
My daughter was severely disabled by the HPV vaccine and has not been able to attend school or receive education for over 4 years. We are in contact with hundreds of families in a similar situation. The Department of Health and NHS insist that the chance of a severe adverse reaction is ‘1 in a million’ and deny that the severe disabilities are caused by the vaccine. However, Freedom of Information requests to the MHRA identify:
• 2598 Yellow Card reports have been raised for serious adverse reactions (the MHRA acknowledge only 10% get reported)
• Serious adverse reactions are more than 10 times more than all other vaccines in the national programme
• Over 19,000 reactions have been reported
Even if the vaccine is a benefit (for the majority) there are going to be many thousands of girls severely disabled and needing care. What will you do to:

  1. Investigate the true scientific facts about this vaccine?
  2. Support those that have been severely disabled?

Hi Andy
Please could I ask you to look into the safety of the HPV vaccine? My daughter has had the worst four years of illness since the vaccines and has been diagnosed with two chronic illnesses. She is still having tests now as is still unwell. She was a straight A student before the vaccines but has scraped through just 5 GCSEs and not been in school full time for four years. Her quality of life has been vastly affected
Thank you

Hi all,
We'll make sure Andy Burnham sees the questions about the HPV issue but can we suggest that you don't ask any more on the same subject as there really is no point - we'll remove any further ones on that issue so it doesn't totally dominate chat.

Thanks

I'm sure there will be plenty of other questions by the time of the web chat, but perhaps there are lots of questions about the HPV vaccine safety because families of girls who have been adversely affect rarely have the opportunity to have their concerns heard.

My own daughter has been to hell and back over the last 5 years because of the HPV vaccine and her doctors still have no idea how to help her or how to properly diagnose her. Our girls need help.

I was lucky to hear Andy Burnham speak at a meeting in Barnsley earlier this week and I was able to ask my question then, which is why I haven't posted a question here. I was impressed with his passion, his convictions and the tone in which he spoke and he agreed to listen to my concerns, which sealed it for me and he now has my support and my vote. I hope he listens to the other parents on this forum about the HPV vaccination because they're just the tip of the iceberg and its an issue he'll have to deal with as either leader of the Labour Party or shadow Health minister

Hello Andy

You make a lot out of your working class roots but as far as I can see once you left Cambridge you followed the same path as others. What would you have done had you not been a career politician and how do you feel about Oxbridge politicos with no experience being parachuted into safe labour seats?

Mnhq, I have been on all three Labour leadership threads and actually I am glad this vaccine question is being asked as I too have a daughter damaged by it. I have no prior links to the other posters From my research it damages those with conditions like Ehlers danlos syndrome and makes their already sensitive autonomic systems worse. Potsuk are working with government on this issue and my daughter in the past week or so has reported symptoms we didn't report at the time for fear of being called you know what at the time. Now the recent research has been released we feel we can say something.
Anyway I do hope my CSA question is also answered along witg the vaccine question. These girls have enough to be getting on with, without financial abuse from the father who abandoned them and leaves them in poverty.

Hello Andy

What's your personal take on how the leadership election has gone so weirdly haywire? I don't think anyone would have predicted we'd be in this position a few weeks ago, even given the shock of losing the election.

I'm guessing you have a fairly good handle on what Labour activists and members are like; do you think this reaction against the mainstream was predictable - did you see it coming?

Seriously folks - enough with the HPV vaccine posts now please. We'll do our best to ensure that Andy addresses the issue.

JustineMumsNet - by removing any further posts from parents concerned about the devastating affects the HPV vaccination has had on their daughter's, MumsNet is surely going against it's own mission statement of being a support network for 'parents by parents'. Some of us have been fighting to have our daughter's recognised as injured for many, many years and, I for one, am utterly crestfallen to read that an organisation that purports to be supportive is, along with the medical profession, pharmaceutical companies and the government, attempting to silence us.

I really need some clarification on the reason for abstaining the Welfare Bill. I have heard your comments post vote and they really do not make sense.

I am a Labour supporter but I am underwhelmed, seriously. How are you now any different to the Tories? (as if you have been anyway for the past 13 years)

Sorry that it feels like silencing Chrissie, but Mumsnet webchats are primarily for Mumsnet users to talk to the guests and we do take action if it feels as though there's an awful lot of posts by brand new members on a single issue. There are 6 or 7 posts about the HPV vaccine now so the issue has definitely been effectively raised, and as we said we'll do our best to make sure Andy addresses it during the chat.

Andy

You and the other candidates need to be honest with the electorate. Will you commit to tell the truth about the deficit and national debt?

For the last 9 years of labour government you spent way in excess of what was received.

Will you tell the truth about austerity in that as a country we still spend far more money than we receive - and that government spending under Osborne is still higher than for 8 of the 13 years of Labour?

Will you tell the truth about the total debt which has been dumped on the NHS by your PFI contracts and the massive impact this has had on health expenditure?

Or will you trot out the same populist tosh the likes of Corbyn does - without facing up to the economic reality.

Britain is not a rich country - it has no money in the bank. In fact it is in hock upto its eyes.

Will you also agree that the best way to pay this off is to grow the economy? Not by borrowing more but by encouraging work, encouraging growth and encouraging business and job creation?

Or will you be answering the questions about biscuits rather than this one?
