Hello all,

It's been a year since we last had a webchat about all things Mumsnet and moderation so we thought we'd do it again!

We'll be here between 11.30 and 12.30 on Friday - JustineMumsnet and as many members of the team as we can muster - so join us then or post up any advance Qs here.

Mind the guidelines at the top of the page now - only one question each and be nice Wink

Thanks ChippingInAutumnLover and JustineMumsnet.

Regarding the amnesty on old usernames, what we can do is allow you to release them if you no longer use them. If you happen to have any old posts or PMs with those usernames, we can assign an unidentifiable, random username to them instead. This would disassociate you from that old username permanently without deleting any posts or PMs.

Of course, this would also mean that somebody else could then use your old username after you released it.

@YonicScrewdriver

But I think you might need to lock the thread after that, Justine, as many people keep on posting and don't read all the OP posts.

I love thread locking. Is it technically tricky? It seems a good compromise between people losing thought out posts and allowing free for alls that aren't pa-worthy but are "robust"...

Yes good point. No it's not tricky and it's definitely something we'd consider in this instance.

@Mintyy

The question about making some of the chat threads permanent and deleting AIBUs after 3 months has been asked again and again. Nothing changes. This is why I cba to join in with today's web chat.

You just did Grin

Wasn't aware chat thread question had been asked before and as said, we see no good reason not to make that change, so we'll get on it.

I can't see the purpose of removing AIBU threads after three months - what is the thinking there? Wouldn't it just annoy those looking things up for reference...

JustineMumsnet · 22/11/2014 15:01

I think Aibu can be pretty funny - one of my fave ever threads was supersoakers one in aibu.

JustineMumsnet · 22/11/2014 15:08

@Mintyy

If aibu is used properly then there won't be any facts or anything concrete to research in there. Aibu is or should be all about asking opinions, hopefully on the more trivial conundrums we face in our lives.

It when people use Aibu to ask for advice eg: "aibu to ask how to cure my smelly washing machine" that you get this blurring of the lines over whether the topic is useful or not.

I think there can be lots of useful advice worth keeping when asking people for their opinions, though, no?
