On Friday 26th November between 1.30 and 2.30 pm Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are joining us for a live chat.

Torvill and Dean became world famous at the 1984 Winter Olympics when they became the highest scoring figure skaters of all time, scoring maximum points for dance to Ravel's Bolero. (If you've never seen it or haven't seen it since the 80's it worth a look - we've been marvelling at it this morning on YouTube at Mumsnet HQ)

They were enticed out of retirement to take part in ITV's Dancing On Ice which begins again in early 2011. The Dancing on Ice Live Tour 2010 DVD is out on November 29th and Tickets for the Dancing On Ice Live Tour 2011 are now on sale from Dancing on Ice Live Tour 2011
Join us on Friday to chat Jayne and Christopher and if you're unable to make it, send your questions to them in advance of the chat to this thread.

Like lots of other posters I remember Bolero really well from when I was young and was quite fascinated by the behind-the-scenes story in a documentary I saw about it a while back-- like how the opening on your knees was because the music was too long for the time slot but you weren't technically dancing until you were actually up on your skates... genius!

Anyway, my question is kind of similar to stranded's, but it seemed in the documentary that although you weren't a couple you never actually came out and said that you weren't in interviews when people were asking 'When's the wedding?' and so on. I just wondered if you were under some kind of pressure to pretend you were a couple because the public seemed to want you to be so much?

We never found it a pressure. We were asked all the time and only told the truth - people wanted us to be together, I think it's like when you watched romantic movies, you walked out seeing them go off into the sunset and after we finished our routines, I think that was the same perception.

@Mimie13

Hi Jayne and Chris so glad you are doing another webchat we have all really missed you especially on twitter. My question is:
Do you ever get the time to watch or have you ever watched the compilations people make of you both on youtube,Teenage dreams is one of my favourites.There are alot of good ones out there.
Hope your both well. Smile

yes I sometimes get chance to watch and really enjoy them. They bring back a lot of memories and make me realise how many routines we have done over the years.

RozzyJnC · 26/11/2010 13:59

Random question, do you watch casualty Jayne? As I swear I have heard you do lol! I love it :) xx

hannah19 · 26/11/2010 13:59

John and Sinead Kerr are the only British skaters that have come close to your success how does it make you feel that we dont have the funding here to support ice skaters but we do for footballers (i mean how hard is it to kick a damn ball lol) x

Whats your favourite thing to do apart from skating?

Trainings going well thank you!

ChristopherDean · 26/11/2010 14:01

@DidEinsteinsMum

Welcome to you both.

Do you get a say in the filming of DOI and do you ever get frustrated by the way it is shot? it gets very frustrating that you cant see the footwork very much as this technical ability is such an integral part of why a level espressive skater is kept in over a more pleasing presentation.

TIA

By show days we are involved in all aspects but mainly getting the skater prepared and confident to perform. We do watch playback in rehearsals and if we feel they are missing something important we mention it to the director. I think if they missing the footwork sometimes its cos the director feels the emotion is an important part at that time or they may be just too close to the cameras.

ZaraC · 26/11/2010 14:02

This Chat is brilliant XD

JayneTorvill · 26/11/2010 14:02

@JoTillo

Music wise, what do you think about Josh Groban... his new track Hidden Away seems like a great choice for the new season? ;)

Thank you for this, we'll have a listen!

ChristopherDean · 26/11/2010 14:02

@ZaraC

Whats your favourite thing to do apart from skating?

I've become a road bike and moutain biker - that's my new work out and hobby. Problem is I live on a mountain and its always up hill at the end!

DidEinsteinsMum · 26/11/2010 14:02

Thank you. :)

Dulcinea · 26/11/2010 14:03

Are you guys familiar with the new format of Ilya Averbukh's Russian TV show "Ice and Fire" (where they combine floor dance with ice dance) and if yes, what do you think of that? Would you consider that kind of variation for DOI in the UK?

ZaraC · 26/11/2010 14:03
Grin
JayneTorvill · 26/11/2010 14:04

@kc9music

It would be so cool if you were able to skate with him (Buble) singing.

We've tried but the timing was always wrong

I've heard he's got a new show, sounds really interesting - would love the chance to see it!

WE didnt have the funding when we were skating either. Having said that, if there is a strong structure producing young talent that would be the ideal. The last successful country to continually turn out champions was the former Russia - I don't think I'd like to live in that climate. As for football, Jayne's become a real devotee, so be careful what you say Wink

bridlah · 26/11/2010 14:06

With Dancing On Ice and other commitments such as charity work and choreography for others taking up so much time, what do you both like to do to relax and escape?

Brina.
