We're delighted that the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, will be joining us for a webchat this Thursday evening 8 and 9pm.

Next week the Deputy PM will be joining other world leaders, celebrities and business leaders who are gathering in New York for the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Summit. He will be aiming for global action to reduce the shocking number of women who die during pregnancy and childbirth in the world's poorest countries.

Nick is happy to answer your questions on the UN summit as well as on his role as Deputy Prime Minster. Join us on Thursday evening or if you can't make it along then post your question (one each only please) here.

Thanks.

Seriously LOL @ Cupcakesandbunting.

On the NHS.

Explain it. Explain all of it please...

FrameyMcFrame · 16/09/2010 21:03

Bah! Nick, I liked you on the TV and I liked the lib dem policies.

But I can't stand the tories, and you've turned into one.

LadyBlaBlah · 16/09/2010 21:03

Nick - just so you know - the only positive comment you have had tonight is from Long Finger Nails - and she thinks Thatcher was a Saint

NickClegg · 16/09/2010 21:04

I'm afraid the Fawcett Society case is part of a legal proceeding so I can't go into any detail.

What I will say is that the last Budget gave more consideration to its impact than any before. We published detailed distributional analysis of the impacts for the very first time.

The Budget is not a single policy but a series of policies. Those policies are dealt with by different departments who do consider their equality impact, as is required by law.

@LadyBlaBlah

You really have not answered the Fawcett Society question.

It is quite important, you know us being a group of women and all

cupcakesandbunting · 16/09/2010 21:04

NickClegg "I understand that people are very anxious about what is coming. The public's finances are a mess. We have to make difficult decisions about cuts because it is not liberal, progressive or fair to force our children to pay back our debts. Instead of putting money in the pocket of bonds dealers who profit from our rapidly increasing debt, we should be spending it on the public services that matter to us all."

Utter mince.

What you're doing is shafting families like mine (earning 45K) because you deem us high earners. We are not high earners. We contribute a lot, which we have absolutely no problem with as we are both big advocates of the welfare state. However, we see zero reward for being one of the families that through high taxes help keep this country where it is. You are taking from us with BOTH hands, in taxes and now the WTC and most likely the child benefit you will take from us.

How about having a word with your chum Dave regarding inheritance tax, amongst other things?

Give us a break, would you?

I realise that my post is only skimming over this issue, that's because Alan Davies' Teenage Revolution is on in a minute and I'm rushed but I know I am not the only MNer to feel this way.

The coalition government strongly supports and advocates for the elimination of FGM and other harmful traditional practices as part of our sexual and reproductive health, maternal health and gender equality strategies. We support the UN International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) programme of action, which urges governments to prohibit FGM and protect women and girls from such dangerous practices. On such a complex and sensitive issue it's sometimes frustratingly hard to know if you're making any real progress - but I'm determined to keep this high up the international agenda.

@AnnieLobeseder

Dear Mr Clegg

Perhaps while discussing pregnancy and childbirth, you could raise the related subject of the ongoing horror of female genital mutilation. According to the website of the charity FORWARD, FGM continues to be inflicted upon approximately 100-140 million African women worldwide, and each year, a further 3 million girls are estimated to be at risk of the practice in Africa alone.

Even more appallingly, this practice is carried out right here in the UK, where an estimated 6,500 girls are at risk of FGM every year.

While the practice is illegal under UK law, no-one has ever been successfully prosecuted for this crime, so among communites where FGM is practiced, this law is no deterrant.

I would like to know where the current government stands on the issue of FGM, how it intends to raise awareness of the issue, how it intends to make sure that no UK citizen ever has this horror inflicted uopon her, and how it intends to raise the issue with other world governments to eliminate FGM worldwide.

ruthie48 · 16/09/2010 21:05

Agree with midwife. Not one, not one answer comment on NHS! Dissappointed Nick and such a good looking bloke as well.

MoralDefective · 16/09/2010 21:05

Clegg.....Horsefly...O.E.D

LadyBlaBlah · 16/09/2010 21:05

So you are saying that you did do the required due diligence ?

ShirleyKnot · 16/09/2010 21:06

Oh Nick, you are behaving like the Orville to Keith Harris.

We all wish we could fly, right up to the sky, but we can't, we can't.

NickClegg · 16/09/2010 21:07

@breathtakingben

Nick, do you still support a levy on the banks, despite the fact that it will decrease trading and therefore growth and put us at a greater risk of double dip recession?

We've actually imposed a new levy on the banks in the last budget - again something which people are forgetting Labour never got round to doing.... It will raise about £10bn over the coming Parliament, and will help deal with the economic effects of a recession which the banks helped create in the first place. But we're also going further, we're actively looking at introducing a Financial Activities Tax, we're going to make the banks publish their pay and bonus deals, and we're trying to find a solution to the bank lending crisis (esp to small and medium sized companies). I totally agree when people, especially in the public sector, say they don't know why they're having to pay the price of a recession they didn't cause, the bankers should do their bit too.

c0rns1lk · 16/09/2010 21:07

I wondered where you all were.

ThatVikRinA22 · 16/09/2010 21:07

did anyone else click on bobs "nice hair" piccy...? i suggest you do.

LadyBlaBlah · 16/09/2010 21:08

That is the quote of the night Cornsilk

CheekyLittleSox · 16/09/2010 21:08

my step mum said all questions and asnwered wouls be veted first = she was right! pathetic

LadyBlaBlah · 16/09/2010 21:08

I am actually bored

pollycazalet · 16/09/2010 21:09

I do wonder why you have come on Mr Clegg. I realise 'come on Mumsnet' is on the to do list of all politiocians these days but suggest you might need to rethink now you've got a bit of power and therefore responsibilty, and we're all SO OVER 'I agree with Nick". I wonder whether you were aware just how angry people are? and it's not directed at Dave - he has very successfully designated you as the fall guy.

reallywoundup · 16/09/2010 21:09

well said polly!

pollycazalet · 16/09/2010 21:09

LMAO at Orville and Keith Harris.

missbeehiving · 16/09/2010 21:10

tinkgirl · 16/09/2010 21:10

education questions please!

NickClegg · 16/09/2010 21:10

@ruthie48

Well I,m not likely to get my question answered about Nurses retiring (180,000) over ten years. Still I have just clocked 30 yrs long service! Only 9 to go!P.S I adore my NHS xThe very best and ifI could afford time off work I would work voluntarily in Third World.

It's difficult for me to know exactly what's going on in your ward/hospital - as you know, it depends on what PCTs, hospital Trusts are deciding in each area. But I think it's important to remember that we've explicitly excluded the NHS from the cuts falling elsewhere, ringfencing the NHS budget is really important for a public service which is not only crucial to every familiy in the country, but also the largest public sector employer in the country.

cupcakesandbunting · 16/09/2010 21:11

I love ShirleyKnot tonight.

One more question before I settle down with Alan Davies; Nick, David Cameron doesn't half look like Iggle Piggle.

Agree or disagree?

ruthie48 · 16/09/2010 21:11

What,s happening to my employer, the NHS Nick?

UnePrune · 16/09/2010 21:11

Remembering how well Charlie Brooker did, you should have a) typed faster, and b) called us all a bunch of bastards, immediately, and in capital letters.
