Hypothetical question about giraffes

Curlygirl06 · 05/04/2025 21:37

Dh and I were having a debate about giraffes (wild evening here!).
If you had a pet giraffe and you took it out for a walk, would you put a collar and lead up the top by its head, or down the bottom of its neck by its body?
One of us thinks it should go up by its head, so that you could gently pull its head down if you were going under a low bridge, for example, or pull it to the side if you were going round a corner so it could see where its going.
One of us thinks it should be by the body as otherwise you'd have a bloody long lead (duh, it's a giraffe so obvs!) and you could guide it just as well from the bottom as up the top.
YANBU of course it should be at the top by the head.
YABU of course it should be at the bottom of its neck near the body.

I love giraffes 🦒 I'd have both to feel more in control.

TheSassyAmberNewt · 05/04/2025 21:38

I think it should be reigns style round the body and neck tbh - like a bolting toddler - otherwise it would wriggle away!

Octavia64 · 05/04/2025 21:39

If you put it by the head how would it stay up?

DustyLee123 · 05/04/2025 21:39

I’d put a saddle on and ride it.

lostinthesunshine · 05/04/2025 21:40

Neither. I think it would prefer reins.

JaffavsCookie · 05/04/2025 21:40

Headcollar rather than neck collar

TooFancyNancy · 05/04/2025 21:41

Came to say the same thing as @DustyLee123 😂🦒

JeanGenieJean · 05/04/2025 21:41

Harness round the body I think.

ThisCatCanHop · 05/04/2025 21:41

I have no clue but I love the utter randomness of this conversation!

HowManyDucks · 05/04/2025 21:41

I'd put it in a harness. You know, like the dog ones that go around the front two legs. When you guide (steer it) you'll move it's shoulders and the neck & head would follow. (Does that even make sense?!) I hope it would have the sense to duck if it came to a low bridge, you may just need to distract it with a leaf or something.

TheDogsMother · 05/04/2025 21:41

Down at the bottom of the neck definitely. More chance that you could reach the end of the lead too.

DonnaSueWeloveyou · 05/04/2025 21:42

Reins would be best, but definitely down near its body.

I don’t know how intelligent giraffes are, but I can’t imagine one would try to walk through a low bridge rather than ducking under it.

FvhgvgghhNC · 05/04/2025 21:43

I agree with harness, using dachshund dogs as a thinking point, leads are bad for their long backs, so I think leads would be bad for a giraffes long neck.

RatedDoingMagic · 05/04/2025 21:43

I think you'd use reins over the shoulders, the neck shouldn't have the pressure of a lead, it wouldn't be good for the animal whether high or low

Pleatherandlace · 05/04/2025 21:44

I feel like the giraffe would know to duck under a low bridge.

EmotionallyWeird · 05/04/2025 21:44

YABVVU not providing a diagram.

I think maybe a lead attached to a harness too. Bear in mind even their legs are pretty long so you're going to need quite a long lead.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 05/04/2025 21:44

They have HUGE hearts ❤️ they’re gorgeous there is an island near Abu Dhabi that has lots of pampered imported ones . Sorry not sure about the reins though

Needs to be like a horse’s headcollar, so on the head… for control of speed and direction as well as height of head for passing under bridges.
If girafe is frisky you may need a bit, so more of a bridle arrangement with very long reins.
I love girafes too. Those sculpted heads, those lashes, those squidgy feet.

deeplybaffled · 05/04/2025 21:46

Hmmm. You’ve now got me wondering about where they would wear necklaces, scarves or ties. Maybe it’s personal preference and you should check with the giraffe in question ?

Harness. And definitely not an extendable lead.

TyneTeas · 05/04/2025 21:50

I do not think my imaginary giraffe would like a collar

My imaginary giraffe, if it needed anything at all, would prefer something like a no-pull halti harness gently across its nose

Fatloss · 05/04/2025 21:50

love the discussion- where would it wear a tie and would it be different to a scarf?
Seems by the head reins like a horse Wildlife sanctuary

Thought it would say - coulter the giraffe walks on a leash - not sure why he’s in Florida though

Just been inspired to Google giraffes & am delighted to discover a group of them is called a tower of giraffes!

Giraffes basically do the splits with their front legs when they have a drink, so I guess they may sort of limbo dance under the low bridges?
