Thought it was a good idea to start this lw, so we stopped cluttering up the Austen Thread (thanks onebatmother, for the suggestion). But I have only just managed to get around to it, so is there anyone else out there who is keen?

What are your favourites, I love These Old Shades, Devils Cub, The Grand Sophy and Venetia. I also managed to discover a historical novel I didn't know wbout "The Great Roxhythe", unfortunately out of print. When googling, I also managed to find www.georgetteheyer.com, which is a mine of info I didn't know about, esp about her modern novels.

draws herself to full malnourished dwarvish 18th Century height (4'8") and says,

Sir, said failure is no failure at all. Everyone with whom I she care(s) to converse speaks perfect French. Je n'ai besoin de cette langue imbecile.

is this an Intervention?

wombling · 17/01/2008 19:02

lol at you two, and at slash Heyer!

This thread has made me so happy, it is a bit scary. I never knew there were so many kindred spirits out there.

Happy sigh, and nervous giggle at OBM.

this must be what people who like to dress up as fluffy animals feel like when they go to those scary conventions in Vegas.

How did I miss this thread???

I've been a fan for years and years, ever since my mum introduced me to the books in my teens - Frederica was my first and Alverstoke still remains a firm favourite (Restorative Pork Jelly, anyone? ). Other favourites are The Grand Sophy, These Old Shades, Regency Buck and Venetia (ooh - that hero fuelled many a teenage fantasy - our poor dhs don't know what they have to compete with, do they?)

And then I watched Sharpe which brought the whole Peninsula War thing to life (and fuelled a few more fantasies - sigh!)

As another poster said, she is the ultimate comfort read as far as I'm concerned. I've read her over and over again - just perfect stuff.

Going to miss my daily fix

Issy, to my shame it's some time since I've been fully au fait (french, see?) but yes, I can definitely go with your thesis...
I need to re-read a couple (off to library tomorrow) and then re-read whole thread.

I'm liking your arched brow and curled lip, Issy.

callmemadam · 17/01/2008 19:58

Lady Callmemadam would like it to be known that she has returned to the Metropolis and would most certainly wish to be numbered among the throng of Miss Heyer's admirers. She would like to remind all Gentle Readers of the very un-Slashy hero of Cotillion, Freddy (and the poor sap Dolph!) and to declare that she since encountering Tristram (The Talisman Ring) at the tender age of 14, has always wished for someone to ride ventre a terre to my deathbed....

ghosty · 17/01/2008 21:07

I love you all
This thread has made me very happy

SIL gave us a big Amazon voucher for Christmas. We couldn't decided what to get. I have now decided to start my own GH collection - I don't think I can wait until June to get my hands on Venetia again.

DH can get a cd or something

I would say that GH novels are the only novels that I have read and re-read many many times and had the same amount of pleasure every single time ...
Can't do that with, say, Harry Potter, can you?

slayerette · 17/01/2008 21:07

Every now and then, I say to dh (who, bless him, has read GH!) 'Will you still ride ventre a terre to my death bed?' His answer is always 'But of course!'

And they say romance is dead!

Thank you for reminding me of quite my favourite phrase, callmemadam!

And OBM, Restorative Pork Jelly will only help if you have contracted pneumonia as a result of falling out of a hot air balloon, I'm afraid...

slayerette · 17/01/2008 21:11

ghosty, where else would you be able to find a big gang of people to chat about GH other than here? Let's raise a glass of ratafia to MN before we all try to procure vouchers for Almacks and scandalise society by waltzing!

Does anyone share my fondness for The Nonesuch and the Beautiful Tiffany Wield by the way? I loved the way no-one fell in love with her and went for the practical, no-nonsense types instead; it was very encouraging to the teenage me.

ghosty · 17/01/2008 21:11

Oooh, but I really AM going in a hot air balloon tomorrow ...

slayerette · 17/01/2008 21:13

Just remember to get in it before it takes off - that was where Felix made his first big mistake, remember.

And if the worst comes to the worst, just hang on for Alverstoke - he'll be in hot pursuit in his curricle...

slayerette · 17/01/2008 21:47

Why, I do declare, I used my last drop of laudanum yesterday. But I am planning on trying this wonderful diet where you drink vinegar with each meal - I'm reducing you know!
