Mumsnet classics

to think it's really cheeky to invite someone to a BBQ then expect them to bring...

...The BBQ!?

We were invited last week to a friends today for a BBQ. They called this morning asking to borrow our BBQ, we assumed there's had broken or the one they ordered hadn't arrived etc - but no. They don't have one. So we suggested they come to ours and bring some of the stuff they'd bought as our BBQ is very heavy and large (won't fit in the car without removing the child seats and lying all seats flat) but it turns out, that not only did they want us to bring our BBQ, they wanted us to leave it at theirs as they are having other friends this evening.

Was IBU to say no? That I didn't want to take our large BBQ and gas bottle to their house and leave it with them?

I do wonder if they've seen it.

I do think that a request to a friend to borrow something is totally fine. It was the manor in which it was asked and the attitude that came with it that I had the issue with.

Lazy "journalism".
Just like quoting people's tweet or other social media.

Bet that quote won't make the Daily Fail.

I don't know - I once asked a friend to borrow her bbq when mine broke for a bbq that she wasn't invited to. She lent me the bbq (I bought the gas) I returned it with a bottle of wine as a thank you. I don't see the issue

Did you arrange the BBQ knowing yours didn't work/ didn't have one?
Did you faux invite BBQ owning friends?
Did you getting shitty with bnbq owning friend when they suggested that the charcoal one would be easier?
Did you fail to tell BBQ owning friend that you hoped to keep it for a BBQ they didn't know was happening and they weren't invited to?

If not, then yeah I'd have learnt it you as well! We lend lots of things out.

This is a brilliant thread! I was reading with interest in the early stages, but laughing so much at the poetry and how it has developed.

OP they were clearly not just wanting to borrow it for that evening, but to keep it throughout the summer (or as long as they could manage) like they did with the scuba gear and other stuff. They must have been envisaging a lovely long bbq filled summer, all with your bbq! Which may or may not have been in the same condition it left you in by the time you eventually got it back. Well done for stamping on this and getting your other stuff back too!

Hi HebeMumsnet, just dropping in to ask if you'd be good enough to lend me this thread so I can get paid for flogging it to the DailyMail? I'm always glad to find a good story on here as it saves me doing any work. I'm also planning a barbecue . . .

The answer is no until sadface perfected.

To part with a fee for a cheeky fucker
Is well beyond our remit mucker.

If the DM will pay for a miserable coupon
Longway will get paid in vouchers - Groupon.

That is SO cheeky! I bet they are going through the list of guests and asking if they can bring a bbq.

We’ve been invited to many BBQs where we’ve turned up and been expected to cook and organise the food. Basically handed the meat, and asked if we could stick it on the bbq for them.......then they bugger off and socialise.
We’re both chefs.
Sometimes we don’t mind but other times it’s a bit of a chore. I’m happy to eat any food anyone makes me.
