Mine died 20 years ago and would be 110ish now but I still miss them so much

The bolster on the bed
An old silky jacquard pink blanket that went under the eiderdown
Warm milk with a teaspoon of grated nutmeg
The sweet bowl next to the fruit bowl
Shape with jelly
Pies
Gin and Its
A kitchen that wasn't always spotless
Whiff of horse, hay and Goddard's linament and occasionally Shalimar
Complete no nonsense attitude but so so kind
Every time I look at dd: petite, blonde, blue eyed and the image of grannie (and named for her)

Cadbury flake cakes, past their sell by date, and the smell of rotting veg (they had a corner shop)
The sound of a teasmaid and the loudest snoring ever.

AureliainBlack · 26/03/2021 20:25

Jelly sandals! My mum always bought me solid, sensible Clark's shoes. All I wanted was a pair of glittery jelly sandals and she always said no.

My grandma bought me them anyway Grin

Bizarrely enough, it's the smells I remember most. The smell of tomato vines is my Grandad's greenhouse and the smell of minted potatoes is my Grandma's kitchen!

Terrylovesyogurt · 26/03/2021 20:33

Lovely thread idea, I loved my grandparents and break into a big smile when I think of them. They died 20 and 30 years ago but I still have strong memories.

Snowballs at Christmas(the Advocaat and winter weather kind!) ,
crocheted blankets,
the smell of ginger biscuits baking,
elderly men dressed smartly wearing flat caps,
a little tub in the boot of their car filled with salt and vinegar, a towel and container of water and soap.. They'd take me to buy fish and chips and then we'd sit eating them out of the paper whilst watching the swans on the lake and wash our hands after!
Twinkle magazine (Grandad would buy it for me - with a 10p mix)
Sitting in the boot of the car (boot open!) eating big ice creams on a day out. My children loved doing this too, the eldest is a teen and still sometimes asks to perch on the boot when having a picnic Grin

Thanks for the nostalgia OP 😍

RosesAndHellebores · 26/03/2021 20:35

Oh I love the idea of soapy water and a towel for after eating fish and chips out :)

The scent of Lily of the Valley. It was my grandma’s favourite.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 26/03/2021 20:40

My nan always made bread pudding but never wrote down the recipe, I made the BBC food one recently and it was just how I remembered it.

Lnix · 26/03/2021 20:41

Sweets in the glove box of the car;
Tick of the clock in the living room;
The super soft pillows and hot water bottles when we got to stay over;
Ginger marmalade!!

Pyewackect · 26/03/2021 20:42

Hard work, honesty, integrity, manners, home made bread, home made jam. And love. Above all love. My mother was an abusive bully and I came back to the UK to live with my grandparents on their Dorset farm at the age of 14. They were lovely. I miss them so much.

puppygalore · 26/03/2021 20:43

My grandma used to make me brown bread triangles with real butter on. She had a special butter Knife that left lines in the bread and made patterns for me. At home we only ever had cheapo marge so real butter was amazing to me! Of course I'd never eat brown bread for my parents, but would for granny - and my kids are now exactly the same with certain food for my mum! I will always think of that snack whenever I think of my grandma. Plus her cardigans. She'd always wear a beautifully embroidered cardi that always matched her skirt perfectly.

Longtalljosie · 26/03/2021 20:44

Apple pie with double cream. Tartan rugs. Benny Hill singing “the fastest milk cart in the west” as the accent is the same. The outside downstairs loo (brrrr)

en0la · 26/03/2021 20:46

The air raid shelter in the garden
The pantry with cold slab for meat
Laundry in with the dolly and mangle
Making paper boats
Grandma giving up the sugar ration for the children as it was healthy for them
Using a stick to draw the curtains
Their red fly swatter
Grandpa going to the cinema and his name being put up on the screen when there was an urgent problem that needed him to go to work
2 shillings when we visited them

LadyCatStark · 26/03/2021 20:49

Yorkshire puddings eaten as a starter (they were from Yorkshire).
The talcum powder tub with the powder puff in the bathroom.
The patterned carpet in the living room.
Getting £1 pocket money a week from my grandma but she would get my little brother’s in change because he thought he was getting more 😂.
Grandad’s sweet tub at Christmas that was shaped like Santa.

Xiaoxiong · 26/03/2021 20:50

Show tunes. My grandmother had one for every occasion and sometimes would tap dance too. She loved a random charity shop bargain, and would also send me newspaper clippings in the post with no explanation.

Every time I watch ballet, or eat chocolate chip cookies I think of my other grandmother.

I didn't know my paternal grandfather as well but his house smelled of pine and wood shavings and every time I smell wood I think of him. Oh and gin! He used to drink gin on the rocks and told me it was called a White Lightning.

romany4 · 26/03/2021 20:53

The smell of putty- Grandad was a glazier
The smell of cigarettes and lemon cough sweets- that was my nannys handbag smell

EwwSprouts · 26/03/2021 20:55

A pile of books, especially Georgette Heyer.
Playing cards.
Watching airplanes go past (lived under a flight path).
There was always cake.
Tea came in cup not a mug.

dayswithaY · 26/03/2021 20:58

Mothballs
A basket of fancy soaps in the bathroom for display purposes only
Plastic fruit for display purposes only including a glittery apple
Maroon nail varnish on toes
Golden Virginia tobacco and Rizlas
White toast cut into triangles
The smell of a Daily Mirror newspaper, folded in half
So much love.

Annietheacrobat · 26/03/2021 21:00

Lilt

Bigpinkslippers · 26/03/2021 21:01

Scones warm from the oven, chips cooked in lard, the smell of cigars is still a favourite and I tear up just thinking about it. Miss them both so much even after all these years.

RandomMess · 26/03/2021 21:02

Toasting bread against the bars of grandma's electric fire with a brass extending toasting fork

Paste eggs for Easter

The smell of her home

Her massive attic with 2 really old carriage prams in it.

user1471538283 · 26/03/2021 21:02

It is smells for one set of grandparents particularly my Grama's pantry. I catch the smell sometimes in mine although I never cook. She would bake so many lovely things and I would help. My Grappa would eat whatever I made.

With my other Grandparents it is their little ways and how hilarious my Papa was. My Dad inherited this and I've always loved funny men.

Most of all it was the time they spent with me. As an adult I'd visit Papa and Nonna and sit talking to them for the whole weekend often weak with laughter. I'm so lucky to have known them as people.

GiveMummyTheWhizzer · 26/03/2021 21:03

Paco Rabane aftershave
Imperial leather talc
Tomato plants

expectopelargonium · 26/03/2021 21:03

I only had one grandparent still alive when I was born, and the only thing of hers I have is a book that my parents gave her one Christmas in the 1970's. After she died, her books went to another relative and when he died, his dd read the inscription in the book, and passed it back to me.

Geamhradh · 26/03/2021 21:04

Yorkshire puddings with jam as pudding
Fried eggs done in the chip pan
Sleeping at their house on a Saturday night and watching Dallas in the winter and Seaside Special in the summer, and on special Saturdays going up to the chip shop and eating fish and chips in the church garden opposite.
Grandad making us hot water bottles in winter and putting me a blue canvas tent on their back lawn in summer. I can still smell the inside of that tent.
Grandad taking us to the municipal park in summer
Going for a week to Blackpool with them for the illuminations.
Them having lunch (dinner) at 12, tea at 4 and bread and cheese at about 8.30
Gran putting her Christmas tree up by early November, (with those Cinderella carriage lights that go for a fortune on eBay) and taking me by bus to do Christmas shopping in Woolies or Boots.
The best Christmas ever when on Christmas morning I woke to find proper furniture, but small, for my dolls, a cot, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers, all made by Grandad in his shed.

Junobug · 26/03/2021 21:05

I love that there is so much food here. They are absolutely my memories. My grandma would have all 8 grand children round on her own. I've recently had no.4 and never fully appreciated her effort. I remember dinners that consisted of pies with pastry baked separately for those that didn't like soggy pastry, potatoes with and
without mint, raw and cooked veg, at least 3 different puddings, a cake tin that was always full, supper of fish and chips.
She had a shitty childhood and did everything to make sure her grandchildren didn't. I miss her and kick myself that I didn't spend more time with her as a grown up.
