AIBU to ask you if a daily habit has transformed your life?

CarlyWarly1980 · 25/07/2020 20:27

Just that, really..
Do you have a daily habit that has transformed your life for the better? A friend recommended a book along these lines but am I being unreasonable to think a daily habit can't really transform your life?
My friend has said the new habit of drinking water and putting on mascara every day helps her feel confident and think clearer improved her skin and helps her concentration. So I'm asking others on here AIBU to think one habit done daily can't really "change" your life?

So earlier on picking 3 things a week was mentioned.

I've already said I'm going to do daily stretches, this stemmed from thinking about yoga so I might do yoga instead in a couple of months or so. I've never done anything particularly mindful in the past so this really is something new, hence starting with stretches.

Another 2:
Guided journal (I love the idea of this. Already keep a journal, but its more of a dear diary type of thing that I write in on various days if I have something to say)

Spend an hour outside every day (currently do this 4 or 5 times a week with running or outdoor bootcamp, but will walk or just sit in the garden the other days)

A great book about changing bad habits is The Kindness Method by Shahroo Izadi.

Weetabixandcrumpets · 26/07/2020 21:22

Those of you who do Yoga...can you recommend a book or an online video or anything? Smile

Weetabixandcrumpets · 26/07/2020 21:29

Ah..I see @CarlyWarly1980 has already answered my question. Smile

Wolfcub · 26/07/2020 21:48

Vitamin D religiously in the morning after being confirmed as low. I also take a multi vit.

Magnesium religiously at bedtime

Pilates twice a week. Made a massive difference to my physical and mental health

I'm reading feel better in five which has some great ideas I'm going to find a few from this thread and the book to add to my routine.

mofro · 26/07/2020 21:54

Some fab ideas there! I’ve been trying to drink 2LF of water and walk 10k steps a day but not doing it daily
Would love for it to become a non negotiable !

mofro · 26/07/2020 21:58

Just start again tomorrow! Habits can take years to form and you will slip up so don’t let those undo all of the work that you’ve already put into it

Just start again

KatherineParr4 · 26/07/2020 21:59

@Weetabixandcrumpets

Try yoga with Adrienne. She has loads of yoga sessions on you tube. I love her.

Smallsteps88 · 26/07/2020 22:09

This is such a good thread. I had my life together until I had my youngest and fell into a really bad PND. All those good daily habits that held my life together seemed to fall out of my head. I’ve been outing myself back together ever since and this thread has reminded me of so many little things I used to do but had completely forgotten. And also given me new things to try. Thanks for all your input!

lindauk5 · 26/07/2020 22:19

@bridgetreilly Me too, having paper planners and writing things down really helps me, I may have more than two though Blush.

Thedogscollar · 26/07/2020 22:20

@CarlyWarly1980 thank you. Will try Adrienne on You Tube.

Emeraldshamrock · 26/07/2020 22:43

Lots of great ideas I'll be rereading this thread slowly tomorrow.
Onwards and upwards. Smile

bridgetreilly · 26/07/2020 23:16

@lindauk5 I mean, I HAVE more than two, but I only regularly use two every day...

Lifeisgenerallyfun · 26/07/2020 23:46

@Weetabixandcrumpets I would second yoga with Adrienne. She have a video for absolute beginners on you tube, really calm and great guidance (how the hell does she know I’m scrunching up my shoulders at that precise moment??? Just ease yourself in slowly, it’s the best part of every day for me

Cantbelieveit101 · 27/07/2020 02:30

Daily exercise.
Can't do without it.
I am in Australia so its a bit easier with gyms open.

coronafiona · 27/07/2020 02:52

Following this thread!

Ruralbliss · 27/07/2020 05:05

I love this thread so much!

Seriously inspired by all the good habits (& feeling a little ashamed of how I've slipped into slovenly unhealthy ways since working from home - rolling out of bed 10 mins before first meeting seems to have become the stupid new norm)

Daily budgeting & bank account review using You Need A Budget (YNAB) software seriously changed my life about 10 years ago now. Can't recommend it enough.

Thanks to this thread I'm going to try to do the following each day:

  • Get up early (my best friend is up at 5am & runs for 10k) - I'll be happy with 6am and some yoga
  • Drink 2 litres water
  • Take vitamins
  • 15 mins writing (I've got a book in me but always claim I have no time to do it)
  • 30 mins HIIT/Dance/weightlifting etc
  • Bed by 10pm

👍

CleanQueen123 · 27/07/2020 05:58

Well I did it! Day one of taking back my life and forming healthy new habits started with getting out of bed at 5:15am and doing 20 minutes of yoga. I feel amazing!

Thanks for starting this thread OP and to everyone that's shared their advice Flowers Grin

KatherineParr4 · 27/07/2020 06:15

@blackcat86

Do you mind me asking what the tea is called?

blackcat86 · 27/07/2020 06:36

@KatherineParr4 its called clipper sleep easy tea. Its not always in the supermarket so we ended up ordering off of amazon

KatherineParr4 · 27/07/2020 06:38

Thank you!

CarlyWarly1980 · 27/07/2020 07:16

One of my habits is going to be no alcohol Monday to Friday. Gradually noticed my evening drinking has increased (massively) and its not a habit I want to foster at all so that's an important start for me. I will exchange it for sparkling water and lemon /lime instead. Lots of brilliant ideas here, too! Thanks everyone for being honest and sharing!

It's a new week and I wish you all the best in your new habits! Have a great day everyone!

I know that doing yoga and/or meditation every day makes me feel better but often life gets in the way and I don't find my way back to it until I'm really in need of it.

I really recommend Yoga with Adriene. My favourite 30 day course is True (half way through it at the moment - I find the summer holidays the ideal time to restart).

I also read every day. A few years ago I realised I'd lost my reading mojo and it as because I felt like I always had to read "worthy" grown up literature. Since I've gone back to reading detective fiction (love Christie and Anne Cleeves) and YA fiction I'm much happier. I usually read about 60 books a year, often find myself going to bed earlier and watching less TV so I can read. Have read lots of articles about the benefits of regular reading!

I also try and get outside every day, whether it's for a short walk or just a cup of tea in the garden (or combine with reading). Harder when working with commute.

When the kids were babies I also started doing one of the Flylady threads on here. I got myself into the habit of making sure the washing up was done/floors sept/kitchen clear before I sat down for the night which made mornings much less stressful.

New habits which have emerged during lockdown have been related to practicing a musical instrument or drawing/painting (but not managed every day).

Wolfcub · 27/07/2020 07:24

I've ordered some sleepy tea thank you. It won't fix being woken by a teen prowling the house all night but honestly I'm so exhausted I'll try anything

A few Pilates stretches to start the day. Might do some in between meetings too as my back is still as a board today

CanICelebrate · 27/07/2020 07:32

A few!
Mindfulness, a daily walk, eating breakfast and a simple pattern of daily prayer.
