To ask what the weirdest thing you experienced or saw at someone else's house when you were a child?

Inspired by a Reddit thread...there were some absolutely weird things that people experienced or saw at their mates' houses as children.

There was a man who said he hated eating at his friend's house because they weren't allowed to drink water with a meal.

There was someone who said their friend wasn't allowed in any other room but the kitchen and their bedroom.

That kind of thing! I'm thinking myself and can't really dredge much up. There was one friend who lived in a huge mansion...think National Trust style place...and it was empty!

Just room after room with less furniture in the place than in an average semi!

Normal-ish family...I think they were broke due to having 5 kids and privately educating them all!

I’m having fish & chips for tea as well now because of this thread. I will be putting them on plates this evening as I’m gonna have curry sauce, but would normally not bother, cos I is common.

Went to visit my godmother and their children in their mahoosive house. We weren’t allowed upstairs at all. The children weren’t even allowed upstairs to fetch toys that they wanted to show us as no children were allowed upstairs in the daytime’ Confused

Theroigne · 10/01/2020 18:58

Sorry - her children

I dunno what happened there!!

hiredandsqueak · 10/01/2020 19:31

My sister's friend had three goats that lived in the house with them, there was straw on the kitchen floor as that was where they slept but they'd obviously gone further into the house as the soft furnishings were half eaten. The house stunk.

BillHadersNewWife. I've loved the anecdotes from your grandmother about Liverpool in the turn of the century. My own grandmother was killed in a bombing raid on Mill Road hospital in 1942. A real tragedy as my dad was only 4.

Anyway, my mum was odd when we were kids. She would do a "big shop" on Saturday, then we would be locked in our rooms on Sunday morning so she could have a lie in and we wouldn't eat all the food. My dad worked on Saturday night, and if he got home and we were still locked in, he would go ballistic at her. He'd then make us mountains of toast and buckets of tea!

The only explanation I can think of is that she was a war child and was really stingy with food. My dad was too, but he went the other way and had the attitude that his daughters wouldn't grow up like him.

Ironically, she left when I was 9, so I did grow up without a mother. My dad's biggest fear

Itsallgonewoowoo · 10/01/2020 19:36

Fish and chips on plates here too, but that's because we split the portions up, two between 5 as they're huge!
Knew my home life was odd but my brother's friend recently wrote an article about her life, daughter of a rock star, had Queen (band) over, very chaotic childhood. Turns out she thinks our home was weirdest. Must admit, most shocking house I went to was clean and we had tomatoes, fresh , home grown and it was warm in the house.

I'm absolutely loving reading through this thread! Some proper laugh out loud stories and my gosh (!!!) for the sadder ones!

Not necessarily weird but growing up I had one friend who's dad was quite rich and he had a fancy pants house all designed. Looked great, airy and bright especially as some of the walls and doors were glass (probably something like Perspex but glass effect). Not frosted, full on see through glass.

Even the bedrooms had a glass wall feature, including her bedroom.
I remember playing there and we'd go play in the bathroom (no glass walls thank god) for privacy.

Looking back now, probably an architectural dream but seems very zoo enclosure like....

A stuffed elephant’s penis on the wall of a big game trophy room. Not kidding.

(On a plate, with a fork sorry)

You are dead to me, Oldish

Fish and chips on plates here too. Because its steaming hot, greasy and has to be shared out anyway.

Patroclus · 10/01/2020 20:36

Worse one ever was I went into a dark room there were two big dolls in the bed. The woman who lived there was injecting. Suddenly these dolls moved and I realised they were her twin grandkids.

DameBaggySmith · 10/01/2020 20:47

I remember my friend, probably about 10 or so finding her mums vibrator... then pinging her mums knickers at the ceiling fan

Neveranynamesleft · 10/01/2020 20:59

Soup over chips or a potato and meat pie was a common thing to have when I was young. As was mashed potato butties.

kerkyra · 10/01/2020 21:01

I remember in the mid seventies when I was about 5 asking my mum to pack me an oxo cube for my school snack and looking forward to this every day

olbndansmummy · 10/01/2020 21:03

Weirdest one for me was friends whose parents had a substantial pools win, early 80s. House was an absolute shitstorm, but they had a potato cut in half and each half attached to a length of string, hanging over the picture in the lounge. When I asked what it was the mum replied, "it's an air freshener" 😕

kerkyra · 10/01/2020 21:09

I also remember my sis and I,we were 10 and 11,going to stay with my Swedish godfather and his new wife, between them they had four kids around our age.

We arrived in Sweden after flying on our own and played lots of yahtzee . I think after a few days godfather wanted rid of all the kids,so we all got on his speed boat, packed with two tents and trays of this under cooked chocolate cake and he dropped us at this island a couple of miles away and said see you the day after tomorrow.
My sister and I were terrified. But the other kids sorted the tents and stripped off and jumped off the cliffs naked.
We lived off this cake stuff until we got picked up. Looking back it was an adventure but seems such a strange thing g to do

Friend's mum was quite posh. Would not let us fill the toy teapot with water (even though we were playing in the garden with it). Older sister secretly lowered bottles of water to us via a string from the bathroom ... until her mother caught her and walloped her.

Some adults are really screwed up.
