To wonder how my dd got to 14 thinking this was the real phrase?

We've all be ill on and off since they went back to school.
One morning Dd was telling me that she had a 'bummed up nose' I asked her to repeat it and she said the same.
I tried to clarify what she was saying and told her it was actually 'bunged up nose'. She laughed and thought I was joking!
She's decided she's going to carry on saying it the way she does Grin
Please tell me it's not just us. Confused

So did bluntness ever come back to defend herself after setting this thread alight with her pork debate?

lms2017 · 12/10/2019 17:41

I only just realised when you say " have a wiff " of something it's not " have a woof" .

Have a woof of that!

It's amazing how many secondary children still think an Inset day is an Insect Day!

DS used to think this when he was about 6.

I asked him what he thought the teachers did on "insect day".

He told me they dress up as bugs and run about being bugs.

Like, duh, of course Grin

I can't help imagining the teachers doing this every inset day now!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 12/10/2019 17:53

DS2 spoke earlier about 'crossing the T's and dropping the I's and I INSTANTLY thought of this thread Grin

In my younger days as a Wren, if there was a call to the gangway we would have call for the appropriate person by saying ‘OM Smith Shore telephone call, gangway’. Only, I thought it was ‘ OM Smith Short telephone call gangway’ and would get quite miffed when people were on the phone too long. I got the piss ripped out of me when people realised 🤦‍♀️

I never understood the expression ‘turning over a new leaf’. I thought it was a stupid to try when the leaf was still on the plant, because it would simply revert to its original position. I must have been in my 40s when I realised what the leaf actually was...

DrydenAird · 12/10/2019 18:29

When I first heard about the supernatural drama "Being Human", I heard "B&Q man" and thought my friend was recommending a DIY programme.

Happyher · 12/10/2019 18:38

When very small my mum used to say ‘night night sleep tight, hope your sleeves don’t bite’ ..... or so I thought and I was wary of my sleeves. It wasn’t till I was about 18 that I realised she was saying ‘fleas’ not ‘sleeves’!! 🙄

syskywalker · 12/10/2019 19:04

Ahem pork rhymes with stork. If you say stark instead of stork, you’re saying it wrong. And it’s not pour-k either both have a clear o-sound

You know thesaurus and dictionaries should have phonetic spellings shown if ever in doubt. But then there may be regional variations like in brum a nine is a noin, lol. And don’t get me started on Black Country it’s like another language all together, even so only few miles the other side of brum.

syskywalker · 12/10/2019 19:16

You guys might want to google homophones (things that sound the same but spell different)

Like pour and poor should make the same uh sound.

Wombleish · 12/10/2019 19:46

So people aren't allowed to have regional accents, @syskywalker? In my accent, pour and poor don't sound the same. Pour has an or sound and poor an oo sound Hmm

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 12/10/2019 19:50

"Like pour and poor should make the same uh sound."

I'm just gonna go ahead and say that these words sound NOTHING alike (when I say them)

StrawberryTot · 12/10/2019 19:54

I always thought it was ‘splesh ew’ not ‘bless you’. I was well into my 20’s before I found out the truth Shock yes, I am ashamed of myself!

Wombleish · 12/10/2019 20:20

@StrawberryTot, that's quite sweet!

Erm... I thought it was a leaf too!

What is it? Am I going to kick myself?!

It is like a new page maybe?

Bubbinsmama · 12/10/2019 20:49

@SistersOfPercy I actually always thought the lyrics were....
Three lines on a shirt (Adidas)
Jewels remain still gleaming

I'm off to consult the Google Grin

DadDadDad · 12/10/2019 20:55

@AllTheNameAreTakenEvenThisOne - that's how I understand it, turning a leaf in your journal / copybook / whatever to start afresh.

VK456 · 12/10/2019 21:57

AllTheNameAreTakenEvenThisOne
Yes - turning to a fresh page.
I’m glad it wasn’t just me ☺️

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 12/10/2019 23:21

Forehead is always fod here!

Decadoma · 12/10/2019 23:24

How many of you think the name Jane has one syllable? Most if you are reading this with a puzzled expression "yes, of courseit does what is this nonsense?"
Anyone in Northern Ireland? Say it out loud - 2 syllables! Jayunn.
Mind. Blown.

Mummygreenpea · 12/10/2019 23:44

My DD age 8 has been asking for a few years to have her ears ‘pissed’. I’m desperate to tell her the real pronunciation but obviously don’t want to teach her swear words!

MetallicHighlights · 13/10/2019 00:11

Living On A Prayer - according to DS aged 5 the lyrics were “Take my hand and we’ll make your dad swear...” Grin

Jojo2wyatt · 13/10/2019 01:45

Lol, I have an American South Georgia accent and pork, fork. Stork, dork, torque, cork, all rhyme in my accent, too.

QueenofallIsee · 13/10/2019 01:54

I’ve posted this before but I was travelling home by train next to a lovely woman whose father had been seriously injured and she was going home to see him. He was in an accident so severe he endured an amputation and had to have a ‘prophylactic leg’ fitted.

cassie2and2 · 13/10/2019 08:43

my very young son wanted a Happy Anno for christmas,
took him to toy shop so he could point one out, no luck,
he said auntie Joan had one, turned out to be .......A Piano
