We've all be ill on and off since they went back to school.
One morning Dd was telling me that she had a 'bummed up nose' I asked her to repeat it and she said the same.
I tried to clarify what she was saying and told her it was actually 'bunged up nose'. She laughed and thought I was joking!
She's decided she's going to carry on saying it the way she does Grin
Please tell me it's not just us. Confused

@Likethebattle it sets my teeth on edge 😬 I dread making it when she's round!!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/10/2019 13:10

I'm sorry, WellVersedIn Etiquette, I am a bit waspish at the moment for reasons nothing to do with this thread, and having lived away from England for a long time, was not aware till I googled it after your post that it is now accepted in UK English as well as US English to pronounce February what I think of as the American way Grin I hope that makes sense.

clickymad · 06/10/2019 13:12

I was 16 when I learnt there was no p in ham(p)ster.

But there is Confused

clickymad · 06/10/2019 13:13

DH says 'corn rolls' for the hairstyle and 'cumberbund' instead of cummerbund.

It's cumberbund isn't it?! This thread gets weirder.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/10/2019 13:35

I'm sorry (and confused), clicky, hamster is pronounced as it is spelled, with no p in it, and cummerbund is also pronounced as it is spelled, with no added b in the middle. Or are you just winding us up? Grin

AtleastitsnotMonday · 06/10/2019 13:51

clicky there really is no p in hamster

littlepaddypaws · 06/10/2019 13:58

Oh dear.

clickymad · 06/10/2019 14:03

Oh dear God. What else have I been spelling and saying wrong for 42 years?! How the fuck can nobody have pointed it out?!

iklboo · 06/10/2019 14:08

there really is no p in hamster

Not unless it's had a big drink Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/10/2019 14:28

There, there, clicky, you're among friends. How often in life have you had to write "hamster" anyway?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/10/2019 14:28

Sorry @DefinatelyAWeeGobshite I can't hear the difference! And I thought I was good at language type stuff!

Whatisthisfuckery · 06/10/2019 16:43

My parents used to tell us to stop being obstroculous. Then I wrote it in my english work at school. Cue lots of confusion from the teacher, ‘what does obstroculous mean?’ I was absolutely adamant it meant being difficult and contrary. Cue more head scratching. Anyway we went through the dictionary to find a word that matched my description. In the end we decided I probably meant obstreperous, I was utterly indignant.

To this day I have no idea where my parents got that word from. When I mentioned it at home they soon stopped saying it. It’s either an old Black Country word which I haven’t heard since (my mother was ashamed of her Black Country accent and that we should all learn to spake proper) or someone got the wrong end of the stick somewhere along the line.

I asked her a few years ago where obstroculous came from and she denied they’d ever said it. I quite like it though.

When I was in the first year of secondary school, I went home to tell my Mum that someone from the building society had come to assembly and given us all bibles. Took her a while to work out it was actually someone from the Gideon Society!

I used to think Jason Donovan was two people - as in 'Jase 'n' Donovan'.

When I first heard the song Golden Brown by the Stranglers I asked my Dad why they had made up a whole song about Gordon Brown.

In my ballet class the teacher used to call us all by our first names apart from one girl where she always used her surname as well - Anne Harrod (Angharad) - I thought this was unnecessary as there was only one Anne in the class Grin

When reading St Clare's stories (or was it Mallory Towers?), I always thought Doris was a boy as it sounded like a boy's name - it never occurred to me that it would be strange to have a girls school with just one boy attending!

Fluffysunshinepants · 06/10/2019 17:00

We still eat Pissa instead of Pizza after my elderly father got confused many, many years ago.

Also I was gated and not grounded, another confusion on his part

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/10/2019 17:33

Grounded is an American import. Before that we were gated!

Batteredoldchesterfield · 06/10/2019 18:03

Panetent/paintent instead of the correct "patent" as in shoes. Mostly a SE thing.

Why is the extra N added??

Carriecakes80 · 06/10/2019 18:17

My brother would sing the Bee gees song as 'Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah Stabalise'
and also thought the Boy George song was ' I WANNA BECOME A COME A COME A COME A COME A CHAMELEON!'And

And my youngest daughter still calls Prawn Cocktail, Pink Prawntail.

My eldest daughters used to keep me wondering though as she used to say Sponge-bob Squarepants was 'BumBum Squareballs, and would refuse to believe it was anything but.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/10/2019 18:23

Thanks for doing that, @DefinatelyAWeeGobshite. I think you've got a lovely voice and accent but I still think those words rhyme, even the way you say them!

Motherinlawsdung · 06/10/2019 18:37

No they don’t!!!Smile

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 06/10/2019 18:40

Woah, what's this about February? Since when has it been ok to drop the first 'R'?
