We've all be ill on and off since they went back to school.
One morning Dd was telling me that she had a 'bummed up nose' I asked her to repeat it and she said the same.
I tried to clarify what she was saying and told her it was actually 'bunged up nose'. She laughed and thought I was joking!
She's decided she's going to carry on saying it the way she does Grin
Please tell me it's not just us. Confused

With my mind she runs...

Mind. Blown.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 04/10/2019 09:07

I think I've got it! Is pork "poo-aw-rrk" and stork "staw-rrk?" If so, how on earth did that come about?

Yabbers · 04/10/2019 09:14

They are different sounds (in Scotland)

@Motherinlawsdung

We’re in Scotland. One of DD’s friends would rhyme these words. One of her parents is from Orkney, where that sound is definitely the same in both words. With Scotland being a big place with a very wide range of accents, I dare say that’s not the only area that rhymes it.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 04/10/2019 09:20

My best friend always assumed that God was called Peter (he was dragged to church as a youngster) .....

..... Thanks Peter God Grin

MrsLinManuelMiranda · 04/10/2019 09:37

My take on the stork V pork thing. I believe that many people are pronouncing stork how I would pronounce stalk, which definitely does not rhyme with pork.

BrusselSprouts12345 · 04/10/2019 09:39

@MrsLinManuelMiranda where I'm from (east London/Essex) there definitely are people who would pronounce both pork and stork like walk and stalk. My dad's side of the family and DP's family, are very working class and that is how they would say it. My mum's side would not.

Sherloidbaisherloid · 04/10/2019 09:40

Not mine but I saw on Facebook someone’s husband thought the words to the Christmas song were ‘a wean in a manger’ Scottish folk will understand! It did make me laugh

Xiaoxiong · 04/10/2019 09:41

DS2 calls Audi's "Howdy's" like they're some kind of country western vehicle. It gives me a giggle to imagine them only being driven by rednecks and cowboys.

diddl · 04/10/2019 09:44

"Scottish folk will understand!"

You don't have to be Scottish to understand!

MrsLinManuelMiranda · 04/10/2019 09:50

@DressingGown I also misheard the Wombles of Wimbledon, but I thought that the Wombles were common as in not posh! @thatonesmine I thought the Irish PM was the tea shop! @strangerthongs I also thought Bryan Adams had his first real sex dream. @Warpdrive and @Slappadabass PMSL at Cork and pre Madonna.

Listening to music in the car, my son says "play 'take my picture'"
I was listening to prodigy.
His favourite song was actually called "smack my bitch up."
Oh dear

Bouledeneige · 04/10/2019 10:24

My friend at college wanted to paint a Muriel on her wall.

We call dinner ding dongs in our house. And conditioner is 'unditioner'.

I've been sitting on the train testing out saying pork and Stork and fork. They sound exactly the same to me.

Stalk of a plant is different though.

But work is werk.

And boot and foot are different.
Look is like book.

In my London accent.

AryaStarkWolf · 04/10/2019 10:30

“Merrily merrily merrily merrily life is butterdream...”

I thought butterdream was some kind of amazing cake topping. Didn’t work out it was wrong til in my 20s

Dramaofallama · 04/10/2019 12:22

I always use to say cock handed instead of cack handed. Even now, if I am talking in a rush or not concentrating on it I will say "i am cock handed" when moving cutlery around Blush

IncrediblySadToo · 04/10/2019 12:22

My only excuse is that the radio sound was quite distorted back in the day. I used to sing "The Reverend Blue Jeans" for Forever in Blue Jeans.

😳😳 say what??? Really. Surely not....

Grumpyperson · 04/10/2019 12:33

I get why stork and stalk are different (although I pronounce them in the same way) but how are pork and stork different?

Or indeed, port and sort?

Loopydizzylove · 04/10/2019 12:38

Sat like a loony repeating pork and stork over and over again in different accents, failing to find and difference in pronunciation Confused

In other news.... Celine dion my hear will go on.... She clearly says "the hotdogs go on" listen and be amazed!

Ds1 also treats us to several renditions of 'I wish it could be Christmas every may" stuff of nightmares

Loopydizzylove · 04/10/2019 12:40

Also my dh used to quite often ask me to start ordering some erotic fruit from the supermarket....... Grin
