We've all be ill on and off since they went back to school.
One morning Dd was telling me that she had a 'bummed up nose' I asked her to repeat it and she said the same.
I tried to clarify what she was saying and told her it was actually 'bunged up nose'. She laughed and thought I was joking!
She's decided she's going to carry on saying it the way she does Grin
Please tell me it's not just us. Confused

After spending what was supposed to be a relaxing bath saying pork and stork about a hundred times I got out and called

My Geordie friend
My Welsh aunt
My Cousin’s husband who’s Scottish

I asked them all to say pork and stork and they all rhymed! I cannot fathom how they don’t no matter what explanations have been given. The examples in the explanations still rhyme for me.

The other thing that baffled me is that my Aunt didn’t question why I was asking!

Jenasaurus · 03/10/2019 19:07

My DS when quite old, lateish teens used to say phewman being instead of Human Being, I don't understand how he thought this, in other ways he was very articulate

Marshmallow91 · 03/10/2019 19:07

@Idontwanttotalk

Grin haha I learned something new today at 28!

Jenasaurus · 03/10/2019 19:08

and I say somethink instead of something, still do someone picked me up on it, and said it was typical of the town I live in to say that, I don't know anyone else that says it but its become a habit

DontCallMeShitley · 03/10/2019 19:09

I used to think the company "artimage shanks" was "artimage sharks" when I was about 6...i never put my hands near the plughole in case I got bit grin

It's Armitage Shanks not artimage.

Jenasaurus · 03/10/2019 19:09

I also used to confuse the word famished with ravished and say I was ravished if I was hungry

From the internet. I forget where I saw it, (I think it was Facebook) but I had it saved on my computer:

Reasons Why the English Language is Hard to Learn

The bandage was wound around the wound.
The farm was used to produce produce.
The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
We must polish the Polish furniture.
He could lead if he would get the lead out.
The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.
A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
I did not object to the object.
The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.
They were too close to the door to close it.
The buck does funny things when the does are present.
A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.
To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
After a number of injections my jaw got number.
Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Rainonmyguitar · 03/10/2019 19:11

It is basic phonetics. It is the OR that is the link. The clue

But you're not even using the R, I am equally as confused that you say Pork, fork, stork, cork all all pronounced exactly the same way. Using 'paw' as rhyme sound, it is; pawk, fawk, stawk, cawk

diddl · 03/10/2019 19:11

"When someone drops glasses/plates she shouts 'slap the juggler' or once 'slap the joker'

What is she trying to say?

Lazysundays18 · 03/10/2019 19:12

I'm in Scotland and Pork and Stork sound totally different when I say them 🤣

My DM couldn't believe at the age of 40 that they were called Tampax tampons not Tampax tampoons (rhymes with harpoons). My obnoxious, gleeful teenage self soon put her right.

Jenasaurus · 03/10/2019 19:16

my DD used to say pacifically instead of specifically

Afternooninthepark · 03/10/2019 19:16

I’ve been with my husband since we were in our teens. When we were 18 we (and some friends) went to London for the day. We hopped into a taxi and my husband asked the cabbie to take us to ‘Piccalilli Circus’ we all fell about laughing, thinking he was being stupid but he looked at us blankly. He had genuinely believed, all of his life that was what it was called. He’s a bit of a country bumpkin, bless him!

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 03/10/2019 19:16

diddl it’s “sack the juggler”.

Rainonmyguitar · 03/10/2019 19:16

I'm in Scotland and Pork and Stork sound totally different when I say them

And here in Ireland. 2 completely different sounds.

DisneyMillie · 03/10/2019 19:16

My DH calls the poppers on clothes snacks instead of snaps - he won’t believe that it’s the wrong word

Bigearringsbigsmile · 03/10/2019 19:17

Oar and or and aw while being different graphene are all the same phonemes. They ALL rhyme.
Pork, stork, war, oar, pour, core, lore, law, for, four , your...all rhyme.

Jenasaurus · 03/10/2019 19:17

and my EX even as an adult used to write Gnow instead of know,

Bigearringsbigsmile · 03/10/2019 19:18

Graphemes

RumpyBall · 03/10/2019 19:22

My son called rugby rumpy. “Look mummy there’s a rumpy ball” Grin

OkPedro · 03/10/2019 19:23

I pronounce the R in all those words you listed bigearrings
Law doesn’t rhyme with Lore in my accent
I’m Irish and quite surprised that other Irish pps say pork and stork don’t rhyme

Solitaryradiator · 03/10/2019 19:23

The worst is when people say ‘on tenderhooks’

Dirtyjellycat · 03/10/2019 19:25

Are the any linguists on here who can transcribe the Scottish pronunciation of pork and stork using the phonemic or phonetic alphabet?

exWifebeginsAgainat46 · 03/10/2019 19:26

@wellhelloyou likewise, Missy Elliot wants you to Get Your Free Corn
