Can't believe what I have just witnessed

Ok I'm not going mad but this did happen:
Went over to my stables to show Dh where I wanted my outdoor security light putting.
Whilst he was up the ladder securing it to the side of the stables I started tying up hay nets and doing waters (we have two horses and my DD pony)
When I went into DD's pony's stable and whilst doing his net I heard something 'plop' into his water bucket (large builders rubble type bucket)
I went to look and it was a mouse that must have just fallen in (we find them sometimes in the horses buckets dead in the mornings but not very often)
I shouted for Dh to come quick. I'm not a wimpy sort but I didn't want to touch it but also didn't want it to drown.
My daughters pony went over to the bucket whilst I was standing in the stable door and looked down at the mouse and then to my utter amazement he pushed some of the straw up the side of his water bucket asthough he did it all the time so some of the straw went into the water and the mouse climbed out!
I have had horses all my life (parents had them so brought up with them) and I have never seen anything like that. One animal helping another from a different species?
My Dh thinks iabu and the pony didn't 'help' the mouse out of the bucket but I saw it with my own eyesAngry so I know it happened.
After a lot of 'yes it did'. 'No it didn't' I tried to recreate it with my DD wind up fish which her pony promptly picked up out of the water bucket (I think he thought it was a treat I'd dropped in as she sometimes puts an apple in there for him to 'bob' to occupy him) and he bit and broke it Hmm but I know he did it.

Mazzystarlett · 11/01/2017 17:57

Awww!

HeirOfNothingInParticular · 11/01/2017 17:58

Lovely. Years ago my DD had a pet rabbit. He got out of the garden one morning and although I tried my best to catch him, he ran off and eventually I had to give up and tell DD that he had probably gone for good. A couple of minutes later the rabbit came running back across the road, chased by our cat, who corralled him back into the garden :)

On my parents farm,I saw a sheep in the field across the way that had overturned onto its back, with all 4 legs in the air-(sheep can't usually right themselves from this position).I was about to go and rescue it when another sheep ran over and used it's head to push the stranded sheep on to it's side,so it could scramble to it's feet. Not so silly sheep!

MadMags · 11/01/2017 18:02

Awwwww he's gorgeous!!!

thecatneuterer · 11/01/2017 18:03

Lovely story (and well said SuffolkBumpkin)

monkeymamma · 11/01/2017 18:03

Oh my word I thought this was going to have a grisly ending - love this!

I needed cheering up due to ratty kids and this really has :-)

JustCallMeKate · 11/01/2017 18:05

One of my mares is very protective of my cat. You always know when the cat is in the field as she stands over her. If any of my other horses go near aforementioned cat they get a face pulled at them by the mare and she has a nip at them. The cat is often asleep in her stable when I go to put them out in the morning.

Her pony and her are amazing together. she has taught him how to bow and how to Stand on the mounting block for treats.

I wonder if he has done it before, or how often it happens? Worth setting up a camera?

Also, how about some tiny mouse ladders in the buckets?

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 11/01/2017 18:13

Is he Champion the Wonder Horse? Bet DD loves him even more now.

VanessaBet · 11/01/2017 18:17

One of the farm cats used to love my pony I had as a child. Pony was less enthused by the cat and was unimpressed by the dead rabbit he proudly presented her!

Deadnettle · 11/01/2017 18:17

Lovely story.

When I was a kid my hamster escaped during the night. One of the cats, caught it and brought it to my sister and dropped it on her bed. We always thought that the cat knew the hamster was a pet because she was a capable hunter and the hamster was delivered unharmed.

IreneInRuins · 11/01/2017 18:18

Thanks for telling us all about that -- I came to MN for something cheery, and that absolutely fit the bill!

CremeEggThief · 11/01/2017 18:23

Aw, that's so sweet. And I don't even like mice!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 11/01/2017 18:23

What a lovely story, and an even lovelier pony.🍎 Here's an apple for him, for being such a good boy.

TheDailyWail · 11/01/2017 18:30

Aw!

Patriciathestripper1 · 11/01/2017 18:32

Thanks sugar and BBC will look up ladders. See if they are pony friendly!

Our cat when we were kids used to knock down treats from high shelves for the dog. I think animals are fairly co-operative.

CafeAuLaitMerci · 11/01/2017 18:36

That's lovely 💐

Tell DH to stop being such a misery!

DonkeyOaty · 11/01/2017 18:36

Oh that's really sweet. Cute pony.

CafeAuLaitMerci · 11/01/2017 18:38

11 yo. That's SO cool and her DD are s SO lucky. (11yo rides & would kill for her own pony!)

MollyRedskirts · 11/01/2017 18:39

Awww, I was expecting this to be a horrible thread, but it's lovely!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/01/2017 18:39

Oh that's just adorable. Such a kind pony. Animals are just like us. They feel compassion for others.
