Has DH got another think coming or have I got another thing coming???

I’ll clarify Blush

DH and I were having a light hearted debate about who was going to sort the garden out this afternoon (there are weeds growing out of weeds, and we have guests coming this week)
DH said that if I thought he was doing it today ‘I had another thing coming’.

I pointed out the phrase was ‘another think coming’ and that he should now go and do the garden as punishment for his failure. Grin
However, he is insisting I am wrong and that ‘thing’ is the right word. I say that doesn’t even make sense! What ‘thing’ is coming?? He just says ‘English doesn’t always make sense.’ (Not technically his first language but he has a British parent so has always been bilingual and is completely fluent)

MN jury needed. Who is correct??
Loser will obviously be doing the garden. Winner will sit down with coffee and biscuits, looking smug and saying 'you've missed a bit.'

Well DH has gone to get the gardening gloves Grin

Although he is grumbling and playing the 'Well I didn't grow up in the UK so how was i supposed to know if someone told me that's what it was' card.

Given that he is not alone in his madness, I have agreed not to be too smug. i will tell him if he's missed a bit

Think.

'Thing' makes no sense.

It's definitely think - that's the whole point of the expression. It's a slangy term for thought.

A lot of people get it wrong - but if they think they're correct, they've got another think coming.

It's think. "If that's what you think, you've got another think coming". It's a play on words.

I can't understand why anyone thinks it's 'thing', the use of the word 'thing' renders the sentence a complete and utter nonsense.

It is of course 'think', OP, tell him to enjoy the gardening and you enjoy the coffee and biscuits.

Think! It doesn't make sense to have another thing coming Grin surprised so many people say it like that but haven't wondered what it means!

We have had this on here before.

To me, another 'think' coming sounds wronger than wrong. I mean, what is a 'think'? To me, it sounds like when numpties say anythink or somethink.

Anyway, in conclusion, I think both are correct (but I still think it's think).

OMG- thing. I meant THING

Someone has explained that the 'think' is a play on words Dick

I've always said 'another thing coming' but no idea what is right

Neither make any logical sense!

Its think - it makes sense, its what I say and the Guardian agrees

It's 'think.' It's the same as saying 'You need to think again.'

GruntledOne · 01/11/2015 15:26

Certainly "think". I suspect people commenting at the beginning of this thread and saying "thing" were jumping on what they thought was a bandwagon.

What??!! It's 'think'!

Report
mercifulTehlu · 01/11/2015 15:28

Wtf? Of course it's 'think'! As in 'you can think again'! How on earth would 'thing' make any sense?

TheSilveryPussycat · 01/11/2015 15:30

Yes it's think.

The one that annoys me the most is "off your own back" instead of "off your own bat."

My Czech friend used to say 'another thing coming' and I thought it was charming (but wrong, obvs). She also says she would like 'a piece of quiet' instead of Peace and Quiet Grin

I also hate it when ordinary sayings get mangled up - like people will say ' a fine tooth-comb', when it is actually 'a fine-toothed comb' . No such thing as a tooth-comb.

Definitely think. Thing makes no sense whatsoever.

Think. I never heard 'thing' until I saw people using on the 'net.

People saying 'think' doesn't make sense, don't you ever say you'll 'have a think' about something?

Report
ipsos · 01/11/2015 15:32

Definitely "thing". Sorry.

Enjoy your weeding.

Both thing and think now look and sound like total nonsense words!
