Has DH got another think coming or have I got another thing coming???

I’ll clarify Blush

DH and I were having a light hearted debate about who was going to sort the garden out this afternoon (there are weeds growing out of weeds, and we have guests coming this week)
DH said that if I thought he was doing it today ‘I had another thing coming’.

I pointed out the phrase was ‘another think coming’ and that he should now go and do the garden as punishment for his failure. Grin
However, he is insisting I am wrong and that ‘thing’ is the right word. I say that doesn’t even make sense! What ‘thing’ is coming?? He just says ‘English doesn’t always make sense.’ (Not technically his first language but he has a British parent so has always been bilingual and is completely fluent)

MN jury needed. Who is correct??
Loser will obviously be doing the garden. Winner will sit down with coffee and biscuits, looking smug and saying 'you've missed a bit.'

Thing!

ladypete · 01/11/2015 17:18

Its think.
Thing doesn't make sense.
Most people say the phrase incorrectly though as proven above Shock

clam · 01/11/2015 17:18

Yeah Wolper It's a brave person who corrects the grammar of someone waving a frying pan in rage. Grin

Dumdedumdedum · 01/11/2015 17:18

Hope he did the gardening this afternoon, OP, because he's got another think coming if he thinks "thing" is right!

MillieMoodle · 01/11/2015 17:18

Definitely THINK.

'Thing' makes no sense at all. Utter madness.

I'm guessing as it's dark now, either the garden has been done already or isn't going to be done today...

lighteningirl · 01/11/2015 17:19

Another vote for think I thought OP was a typo with thing!

Wolpertinger · 01/11/2015 17:20

Indeed clam indeed Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 01/11/2015 17:21

THINK!
THINKTHINKTHINKTHINKTHINKTHINKTHINKTHINKTHINKTHINKTHINKTHINK!!!

So think on.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 01/11/2015 17:22

No question- it's think. Thing makes no sense at all. If you 'thought' something, you must have another 'think' coming!

lostInTheWash · 01/11/2015 17:22

"If you think I'm doing xyz, you've got another think coming."

^^ This has always been my understanding. You'd be doing a rethink.

Just spoke to DH he says it's thing.

I said what thing is coming my way - what is this thing?

He always understood it as a veiled threat - so it's like a knuckle sandwich coming your way in his view.

He pointed out it should be thought not think - which is another reason he though it was thing.

I think it means where I grew up was just a touch more civilised in that we like the grammatical joke and don't go round threatening each other with violence Grin.

GreenPotato Thing does make logical sense

No it doesn't, not when you consider that it's preceded by 'another'. You can't have 'another' of something you haven't already had at least one of.

It's really illogical, when you consider that pesky 'another'.

DinosaursRoar · 01/11/2015 17:26

Think.

(grew up in Cheshire, currently in Kent, have lived in Sheffield, it's always been think)

As in "if you think X, then you have another think coming" - ie. 'if you think X then you need to think again' - "another think coming" means "you are about to think again".

NotMyRealName2015 · 01/11/2015 17:29

Well, it seems we have kicked of quite a debate! should have just done the bloody gardening

To all the 'thing' defenders: I'm sorry but I just can't get my head around our explanations. It's giving me brainache! Fairplay for tryng though, when I asked DH to justify 'thing' he just said "how should i know, that's just what it is" Hmm

It is annoying when people get these things wrong. I've got a friend who insists on saying 'pacfic' instead of 'specifc'. Years ago i had a colleague who pronounced 'precdent' like 'president'. Maddening.

On the plus side, my garden is looking much better...

Omfg

I've just asked Dh and he said 'thing'. Thing! Idiot.

If he survives, divorce is the only way to go.

rosy71 · 01/11/2015 17:31

It's "think" obviously. It means what you're thinking is wrong so you need to think again. Why on earth would it be "thing"????

TempusEedjit · 01/11/2015 17:33

greenpotato appears to be the "think"ers escape goat on this thread Wink

WaitroseEssentialPancetta · 01/11/2015 17:34

Wish I hadn't opened this thread because I'm so embarrassed for all the people saying 'thing' that my skin hurts Sad

Furiosa · 01/11/2015 17:34

It's THINK. Scottish 30 something.

But if you think this is bad I've been hearing teenagers say On accident a lot lately. Also Addicting instead of Addictive Angry

clam · 01/11/2015 17:35

Not just saying it, waitrose, but persisting with the idea even when told it's categorically wrong.

annandale · 01/11/2015 17:36

'on accident'? Can't quite think what they are aiming for there?

GoringBit · 01/11/2015 17:37

Think... "If you think that xxx, you've got another think coming."

Another thing coming makes no sense to me.

While we're at it, do people do things off their own bat or off their own back?
