Aibu over lady using my parking spaces.

We live in a housing estate and each house or flat has one or two spaces allocated to them. Most of the spaces are directly outside our houses except a few that are round the side that have garages. The spaces aren't numbered but everyone seems to know who's is whose. There's a new neighbour that has moved in next door to me (a corner house) and has a garage parking space round the back of her house, however she uses both my spaces as she parks in the middle of them. It's quite annoying when there's nowhere else to park as you have to park further down the road.

I went over today and introduced myself and poilitley told her the spaces were mine and hers was round the back but she was welcome to use our other space when we don't have guests but could she park to one side so I can fit my car next to hers. She looked at me with a blank expression, said no and shut the door on me! What do I do now!? I just stood there for a moment open mouthed and then went home.

Now I'm not sure if she has mobility problems as she's not exactly nimble anymore (about 65) but I am shocked at her one word reply!

I usually just park behind the offending car. As close as i can without actually touching it. As long as nothing else touches her car you'll be ok. Second trying to park on either side of her too.

If you can, can you do this and then use the bus? Or go away for a bit.

Or just park behind her and tell her you're going away.

sockmatcher · 16/02/2015 08:07

I'd have been ringing the door bell at 6am this morning

Comito · 16/02/2015 08:39

Nonsense. If OP owns that land then she can (and should) enforce the fact that the spaces are hers.

Yes, absolutely and no-one is suggesting she give it up to the neighbour. My point was more that realistically and staying within the law, it will be difficult to stop her parking there if she insists on doing so.

I own a flat in a modern development and there are a lot of parking problems along these lines, usually people ignoring clearly marked and allocated spaces. We have had people ask to put locking bollards up but it's against the terms of the management agreement. Yes, I know it's shit. My solution was to keep blocking them in and making them wait for me to move while reiterating that it was my space, it's clearly marked and they shouldn't park there. There was one persistent offender but they got fed up with me making them late for work because it was inconvenient for me to move my car at that exact moment.

I used to live somewhere where nearby companies who were entitled to four spaces would have over a dozen cars crammed in during the day, literally blocking you in two or three cars deep. Working all hours of the day and week, it was an absolutely bloody nightmare. In hindsight, I really wish I had taken legal action against them. The disruption to my life was significant and persistent, as was the extent to which the bastards didn't give a stuff. This stuff can be really bad sometimes. It's a pleasure actually not to have a car these days.

Comito · 16/02/2015 09:09

Yeah, I completely agree! It was a massive PITA but the management company were unable to stop them parking there apart from writing letters to everyone which obviously got ignored. It did get so the woman doing it was actually embarrassed to come to my door and ask me to move, especially when I asked her how many times she would need to be late for work before she learned not to park in my space.

Unfortunately, parking situations like these rely on people being decent human beings but if someone's determined to be a selfish cunt then there's not a lot anyone can do.

I did know someone whose ndn repeatedly parked on his driveway. After about the third time, he towed the car off and left it in the road. The ndn immediately came running out saying 'oi, that's my car' and just failed to understand why he couldn't park on someone else's driveway. Some people are just entitled shits.

Well there's not just letters. If the spaces really are her property, then police or no police, court becomes the ultimate option.

Whatisaweekend · 16/02/2015 09:27

What annoying woman! To park in your spaces is bad enought but to straddle her car across both is just the giddy limit. Have you got any way of taking date stamped photos? I would start up a photographic diary sort of thing of her trespassing incase you ever need one for solicitors, mediation or whatever.

Let us know how it goes with the estate manager, finding a copy of your deeds etc.

HazleNutt · 16/02/2015 09:30

I would not park in her space, or damage the car - would ruin your moral high ground advantage. It is totally fine though to keep your bins or any other heavy items on your own driveway, and that's just too bad if there's also a strange car there..

WireCat · 16/02/2015 10:06

Is this shit sorted?

SoupDragon · 16/02/2015 10:10

I think the problem is that OP is unable to block neighbour in without blocking the road.

A few large flowerpots filled with concrete would make it a PITA for the neighbour to move her car.

Nannyplum2015 · 16/02/2015 10:42

I've phones the management company and the lady is going to send her a letter with a plan of the car parking spaces and will circle where hers is (she already knows where hers is though!) Her car moved this morning and I've put mine in it so problem solved for a while.

Staywithme · 16/02/2015 10:50

I hope you haven't left any room for her to squeeze in beside you Nanny or she'll do it as a fuck you to you. Hopefully the letter will be enough and she was just too stubborn to move it because you'd asked. Am waiting until tonight to get an update. Don't let us down. Grin

ChristmasEveSteve · 16/02/2015 11:13

She may not realise you own the spaces. I would get a copy of the deeds to put through her door. Its only £3. I would check hers too in case there is a mistake somewhere. £6 for reassurance!

ChristmasEveSteve · 16/02/2015 11:14

If the letter doesn't work of course.

SauvignonBlanche · 16/02/2015 11:18

Hope that works.

HappyGoLuckyGirl · 16/02/2015 11:31

What an entitled bitch. I'd put a stinger strip over your car parking spaces. joke

I would definitely do as SoupDragon suggested and put some concrete filled plant pots behind her back wheels.

Deux · 16/02/2015 11:44

In the meantime, can you put something in your empty space?

Would be ideal if you were to do a tip run and piled some stuff in the empty space. Or can you buy some cones?

goodasitgets · 16/02/2015 12:34

It is stressful. I'll entertain you with my parking story while we wait Grin
So 8 years. My neighbours are (sorry but they are) thick as pig shit and haven't yet got the hang of its my space - did I mention 8 YEARS

we have done everything from polite notes, solicitors letter, blocking people in, asking nicely. Police involved due to aggression
I ask someone to move the other day and she goes to park in my neighbours space, so before she does I say (nicely) they are actually both private parking, sorry, but there's a space just up there
At which point she says " how the F am I supposed to know they're private you stupid F'in C*"
The 8 years of rage imploded and I had to go inside before I actually put a brick through a window.
Apparently you also can't paint "get back you bastard or I'll break your legs" on a parking space (shame)
So I'm settling for bollards, and foot high letters painted on the space. Because the other ones apparently aren't clear enough...

Lweji · 16/02/2015 12:38

Can you paint PRIVATE (door number)?

Staywithme · 16/02/2015 12:42

Apparently you also can't paint "get back you bastard or I'll break your legs" on a parking

Class! Hahahahahahaha Grin

goodasitgets · 16/02/2015 12:50

It already has the door number. And I've spent 8 years knocking "not your space, please ask visitors not to use it, please don't block me in"
I asked one women not to block me in, she moved, as I drove out she drove straight into my space
I did get out the car and go "are you actually taking the piss?!"
Seriously a tortoise would have more parking sense than their visitors
I'm having X space, private parking. Alternatives also included "f off to the far side of f" "get the F off my land" and "stupid people park here"

Staywithme · 16/02/2015 12:58

stupid people park here I wouldn't use that one as you will be parking there. Grin
I'm just wondering if you're permitted to clap a car that's on private land? Naturally you would put a sign up warning of such a thing of course and be very very careful to photo car before and after in case you're accused of causing damage.

There are sites that you can post photos of bad parkers on. Parking like a prick, etc. if you stick a note under their wiper every time they park and tell them they will be on it the embarrassment might be enough to make them stop.

Staywithme · 16/02/2015 12:59

Clamp not clap.
