Tell me about a random unsolved mystery in your life....

RevoltingPeasant · 15/04/2014 21:23

....inspired by the intriguing threads thread!

Does anyone have a mini-mystery, or a story they want to know the end to? We can all supply improbable answers Grin

Here's mine....

DH and I go for a walk around the block most nights before bed . Almost every night, at a particular point in the neighbouring street, there is an 'offering' of baked goods in the road.

Sometimes it is bread rolls. Sometimes, baguette. Once, about 8-9 Mr Kipling's Bakewell tarts. Just lying there in the road.

At first we thought it was for hedgehogs, but then the cakes? And in the road?? Confused

What's your unsolved mystery?

Dandelion, bet he was schizophrenic.

Dandelionsmith · 24/04/2014 21:31

I just don't know. It was the fact that he did it without me really seeing! So he must have practiced. It was very weird.

HemlockStarglimmer · 24/04/2014 21:55

PinkLemons If I'm using my laptop on my lap while it's plugged in and pick up my plugged in iPad I get a vibration in my hand.

The same thing happens if I touch my daughter when she's using her iPod when it's plugged in.

hellymelly · 24/04/2014 23:34

Monkeyharris- Gambling? Really can't think of anything else, as even another secret family would presumably not account for such a large amount of money?

WordsOnAScream · 24/04/2014 23:36

My mum took me shopping and bought me some really cool new black Adidas Sambas. I'd wanted them for ages because Damon Albarn had some and was really happy.

I took the dog for a walk and got them a bit muddy so washed them off then tried to stand them up against the Aga to dry. Mum said to pop them in the warming oven (cooler section at the bottom), with the door open a bit, to dry out of the way.

I checked a couple of hours later and they were gone. And they were never seen again! Luckily mum wasn't angry with me because she knows I put them in there and that I loved them too much to lose them.

ToAvoidConversation · 25/04/2014 00:10

DisneyDiva - we used to have a very similar sound. It was mice in amongst things packed in plastic Confused

Thumbwitch · 25/04/2014 01:37

Monkeyharris, I think the same as hellymelly - either that or he was paying off some longstanding debts!

I have a new unsolved mystery, which is relatively easy to deal with - why has MN made a big page of this but failed to make it a Classics thread? It will disappear if left in Chat (as we all know) so can it please go into Classics?
Thanks

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 25/04/2014 04:37

Louiseandrowan Did you love "Floppy"? If not, maybe s/he decided to go to a family that did love her/him.

MotorLoo · 25/04/2014 08:57

Yes can this please go in classics? It's equally moving, spooky and hilarious.

I'd also like to know if the basement man was reported?

Eliza22 · 25/04/2014 09:13

WordsOnAScream... Is it possible they were inadvertently cooked and someone binned them, knowing how upset you'd be?

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 25/04/2014 09:48

That's exactly what I thought, Eliza. Bet Mum felt bad she gave you dodgy advice and binned them, Words.

Either that or they were involved in a time-slip, and some poor woman in the 19th century pulled them out of her oven in proper confusion! Grin

I am loving this thread and also have a couple of possible theories,

lisej Re your phantom train, My friend and I experienced similar when we were about 10 or 11. We were camping out in her garden and couldn't sleep and it was a hot muggy night, so were just chatting quietly.
3am in the dead of night we heard a train, no other sound just the train.
We were quite freaked out as although our town does have a railway it is on the outskirts of town several miles away in the other direction.

It wasn't until we moved here (near said railway) that we realised although the train runs regularly every day to the timetable we only ever hear it now and again at random times although its only about 3 streets down.

It is due to which way the wind is blowing and whether it carries the sound to our house or not. Sometimes it sounds like its running through the garden as its so loud but most of the time we don't hear a thing. So that could be a possible explanation.

ladyflumpalot Re your ball bearing, I also had the same but with a stone in my head not once but twice!!
when i was about 14 Had a sore spot on my scalp with a small lump and scratched it, out came a small black gravelly stone. you know like the stuff they use when laying tarmac. Couple of months later another one came out on a different part of my scalp.
Told my mum and she also experienced this but with a piece of glass, (cant remember where it came out but def didn't go in there) her theory was that falling over as a child, foreign objects get embedded into a grazed knee or wherever. Then it travels round your bloodstream until your body tries to expel it usually in a different place to where it went in. Sometimes many years later

Not sure if it possible but its the only explanation I have for finding stones in my scalp!!!!

Daddypigsgusset · 25/04/2014 10:28

I have pulled a stone/gravel type thing out of my skin. It was in a mole on my lower back. I was forever falling over when iwas a kid so if possible to travel around, id put my money on that

MandarinCheesecake · 25/04/2014 10:34

So busy with my theories forgot to add my own mystery!!

When we were growing up my nan often talked about her sister who had been in a mental hospital for a period whilst my dad was young leaving her young children in the care of her dh. It was no big secret although we weren't sure exactly why she was there.

When my granddad went into a care home we cleared out his flat and found letters written by my nan (My nan died several years ago) to my dad and his sister when they were young children.
It transpired that the time my great aunt was in the mental hospital my nan was there at the same time as a patient!!!

This was never spoken about and we had no idea. My dad is now in his 60's, we gently probed my dad about the letters but he went on the defence and knew not to ask anymore questions.

I want to know what happened that the two sisters ended up in the hospital at the same time both leaving thier young children in the care of their fathers. This would have been in the 50's

And why was it common knowledge that my great aunt was there but the fact my nan was there, was silenced all these years never to be spoken of again

MandarinCheesecake · 25/04/2014 10:47

daddypigsgusset Yes I too spent my childhood covered in cuts, bruises and scabby knee's I was just one of those kids!!!

AmyMumsnet · 25/04/2014 10:59

Hi all,

We've now moved this thread to classics.

Now please stop reporting it as we've lost hours of our day reading it each time it gets flagged.

lottieandmia · 25/04/2014 11:36

I am intrigued by everyone who had flying experiences.

Wrt my daughter, what happened was that I was holding her and she was crying in another room nearby. It was definitely her - it was her (very distinctive, sounded like a little cough) cry. My older daughters tutor was there and said 'how can that be dd2 and was freaked out.

I've heard that children find it easy to astrally project themselves although I certainly never could, but perhaps that what those of you who could fly experienced?

WordsOnAScream · 25/04/2014 12:09

Eliza and Saga Yes, it's possible, though I did check the bins. It's unlike her (she was not one or sparing my feelings Wink) and she was as annoyed as me and went around looking for them and we laughed about it for years. I will ask her again, though.

I know something must have happened to them; all I can think is a very targeted robbery in the middle of the day with us in the next room.

Or maybe there was a timeslip saga. I love this photo of the time-travelling hipster'. Reckon he got his clothes from a timeslip. Wonder if he's wearing my trainers...

BigRedBall · 25/04/2014 12:33

I have another one from a year ago.

There was a spider walking across my room, about the size of a 5 pence piece. I hate spiders so threw my shoe on it from the bed and called DH to come and pick it up. All the time I was on my bed looking at the shoe. DH came with tissue and lifted my shoe, but the spider wasn't there. It couldn't have gone anywhere because it was the middle of my room and I was watching. It wasn't stuck at the bottom of my shoe. It just disappeared. That was really really weird.

marshmallowpies · 25/04/2014 12:59

The 'random things disappearing' has now happened to me. DD was in our bed the other morning with some toys, and was hiding a rubber duck under the pillow and finding it again, very pleased with herself.

She then threw some toys on the floor, heard them land & roll under the bed and I thought vaguely 'oh the duck will be down there'. Then DD kept repeating 'duck gone, duck gone'.

So we looked under the bed - no duck. Under pillow, inside pillow, shook out duvet. No duck. Under bedside table. No duck.

I've now cleaned out right under the bed oh my god the dust and there is no sign of it. We have plenty of rubber ducks, so it's not a problem, it's the question of where on earth it WENT that bothers me...

MandarinCheesecake · 25/04/2014 13:29

I have another one from when we moved into this house in December 2006.
we'd only been here a short time so could have possibly been January 2007, well we hadn't put up any curtains or curtain poles yet and as there was only us and one other family in this street wasn't in too much of hurry to get it done.

Was in the living room sitting on the sofa when suddenly a black shadow was cast across the window like someone had switched the lights out. So went to the window looked up and there was a massive plane right over the street.
Now might not be too unusual to see a plane in the sky you might say but this thing was massive, I could see the underside of the plane and the wings and also it was flying way too low. I thought that it was going to hit the roof of the neighbours house it literally skimmed the top of the house.
It was a proper "wtf??" moment, I shouted DH and ran outside as I was seriously worried that this thing was going to crash and was maybe making and emergency landing in the field behind neighbours house. it had gone by the time dh got to the window

I watched it disappear behind the neighbours house out of view but when I came back in I realised that the plane wasn't making any noise!
Now for a plane to fly that low over the rooftops you would expect to hear the engines or something, but no all I heard was silence!

It looked like a military plane of some sort and have Googled pictures and I am certain It was a B25 Mitchell bomber plane used in WW2.

It is possible that it was travelling to an Air show as we do have an Aerodrome about 15 miles away and it was going in the right direction but I cannot explain why it would be flying so close to residential properties and why no sound!

This lunchtime dd2 and I were eating lunch at the kitchen table when there suddenly came the sound of something small falling onto the laminate.

We both looked and saw a small sphere bouncing in the centre of the room until eventually the bouncing stopped and the object rolled a little way before coming to a stop.

It was a tiny ball bearing.

Wherever did it come from and how could it possibly fall into the centre of the kitchen?

TalisaMaegyr · 25/04/2014 14:27

I'm going ghost hunting tonight at Alton Towers. I shall be sure to let you know if there are any unsolved mysteries to tell tomorrow!

DisneyDiva87 · 25/04/2014 16:24

Some of these stories are just too creepy.

I don't think it would have been mice ToAvoidConversation, we live in a first floor flat so would that not be unlikely? We had never heard it before and have never heard it since. Maybe it was our dogs bones rattling as he leapt from the bed, he is 13 afterall.

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 25/04/2014 16:24

Ok, now I've finally read all of these and been somewhat freaked out, time to add a couple of my own. (Very random & lighthearted in comparison to some but a bit baffling all the same)

I used to work for a well known high street chain in one of their biggest stores on a retail park. One evening after closing time some of us stayed late to help as we were having a till system refit. We had big old wooden counters with 3 tills and each till base was on a slide out desk type thing on wheels which sat under the main counter so you could pull it out to get to wires at the back of the till computer base etc.
As the workmen pulled the till desk parts out there was no end of rubbish behind them - old receipts, bits of paper, pens, lots of dust etc as expected as they very rarely got moved out from under the counter.
Under one was a dead rabbit Confused How had it got there, how long had it been there? It wasn't decomposed and didn't particularly smell so guessing it was fairly recent but it meant the rabbit must have hopped into the shop (presumably through the front door which was big automatic doors, round a big fixture and to the till at the front which was pretty far from the doors) with no one noticing (unless there was some obscure rabbit sized gap somewhere in the building which meant it could have got in after closing time.)
Rabbit must have gone behind the tills where the sales assistants stood, but there was literally a 1cm gap either side of the desk part that pulled out and no other way to get to the spot where it was found unless it was last time the desk was pulled out.

My other one:

Last year my hair straighteners caught fire and also melted the heatproof mat/pouch they were sitting on. I bought new straighteners and decided to buy the same mat/pouch again as it was ideal for what I needed. Looked at prices on Amazon first (didn't add the item to my basket or anything), then thought I'll just check ebay before I buy in case they are cheaper, then did buy it now on one from ebay as it was a few quid cheaper. That arrived a few days later and I started using it with my new straighteners. All great.
A couple of weeks later a big box from Amazon was delivered to me and I couldn't think what it was as I very rarely use Amazon and couldn't remember ordering anything. Opened this huge box and it was full of extra padding and the same heat mat/pouch (which was really small in comparison to the box) that I had looked at on Amazon but then bought from ebay. No record of the order in my Amazon account, no emails, no money been charged to my card etc.
When I looked at the invoice it appeared to have been bought as a gift for me from someone called Jack (surname) I don't know anyone called Jack Confused It was about £7.00 and although I looked at it online, I hadn't added it to my basket, I've never had an Amazon wish list so it's not even like Jack intended to buy one off a friends wish list with the same name as me.
I thought someone was playing a joke but no one else knew I was planning to buy it and what a pointless joke! Still not sure what that was all about but I didn't need 2 so I flogged it on ebay for about £5 a few weeks later! Grin
