to think this couple are bonkers

So we have got quite friendly with this couple through school. They are both professionals lawyer/banker and seem to have shedloads of money and live in a beautiful house. But I have always thought they are a bit odd - a few strange random comments and slightly bonkers opinions on things, but I don't mind strange and DD gets on well with their DD.

They invited us round to supper at their big posh house the other night and DH and I made a real effort to 'scrub up'. Paid for babysitter, dolled ourselves up and spent more on wine than we ever would at home.

We get there - all fine and lovely. Glass of wine and chit chat - slightly odd topics (sex life of Nomads in Papa New Guinea and a less interesting 15 minutes on Chinese banking but still...), then we sit down at quite a formal dinner table and hostess serves starter of.... tinned soup. We know it's tinned because it's Heniz tomato soup and there are 3 empty cans in bin... That's ok, we like soup and chat away. Hostess starts laughing uncontrollably at something. Host doesn't think this is odd but sits back and wait for her to stop. We smile and ask what's so funny but she just carries on laughing. Then she stops and carries on talking as though nothing had happened. She then makes a bit to-do and hoo-ha about serving up main course of.... macaroni cheese. Not even baked in the oven, just macaroni stirred into a cheese sauce - like I make for DCs. And that's it.

DH and I eat it and try not to catch each others eyes. Nothing is said about the choice of main course other than 'I hope you like macaroni cheese' so I start to wonder if my expectations were too high? And then we get pudding which is a scoop of Neapolitan ice cream out of the tub.

As we leave, host pinches my bottom in full view of everyone and says 'that was fun' and hostess laughs her head off and says 'pinch punch first day of the month' - even though it isn't. And that's it.

DH says they are a bit quirky and to stop going on about it but I think they are mentalists. I'm right aren't I?

I may "like" Pom Bears on FB and see if I can out any of my RL friends as MNers!

savoycabbage · 13/11/2010 01:01

They do sound a bit Jilly Cooper-esque.

When you google pombear, this thread is eighth. Mr SlightlyJaded should be very proud. [pom]

Alaya · 13/11/2010 01:29

I've just spent nearly two hours reading this and I still can't see clearly through the tears of laughter. OP you and your DH are genius!

Best thread in the history of the internet!

OneTwoBaubleMySanta · 13/11/2010 08:59

I have a Pom bear FB status to find my RL MNers, one in the bag (snark) already!

DoodlingPomBear · 13/11/2010 09:03

currently at no 6! Mr SlightlyJaded should be even prouder!!!!!

TootaLaFruit · 13/11/2010 09:19

Best thread ever. Your DH is a hero. And you are pretty darn fabulous too.

Please, please, pleeeeease go to Cornwall so that we too can have some more? Grin

Alaya · 13/11/2010 11:19

Hehe I just updated my FB status to 'Pom bear, anyone?'

You're all a terribly bad influence on me.... I like it! Wink

SlightlyJaded · 13/11/2010 12:30

AnyoneforTurps I am glad you asked. Everytime I post I keep meaning to add a caveat about their DD. She seems lovely, sweet and currently displaying no unusual behaviour that I am aware of. My DD thinks she's great and aparantly they play 'Headmistresses' together at break time - whatever that involves.

I just thought I should cover my arse for when they sue me for slander mention that

Wonderful thread! SlightlyJaded, I salute you and your dh.

Indaba · 13/11/2010 15:50

I fear am going to be laughed at forever on MN and will have to name change.....but have lived out of the UK for a while.....what is a Pom Bear. We don't have them where I am. Having read whole thread I assume its a sweet of some sort.

mumoflittlemouse · 13/11/2010 15:52

I have just spent a precious hour of my mum babysitting our 16mo DD reading this, when actually I am meant to be rewriting my CV for a possible life changing job opportunity.
I have only got one more hour before I have to pick her up but I am unrepentant, that was totally hilarious.

Oh my gosh, the original dinner, the turps, the mad comments, the umbrella conversation- my personal highlight and of course, the magnificent pom bear moment. Treats, treats, treats!! Killed myself laughing in the house on my own like a loon.

Loved it.
Mrs & Mr Slightly, I salute you both.

True eccentrics. How fabulous. They are getting to be quite a rare breed these days. I'm in love with the sound of this bonkers family. Wish I knew them!

Slightly I know that from this day on, whenever I'm feeling low I will only have to think of a Teddy Bear shaped snack and all will be well with the world.

Thankyou so much. Grin

Habbibu · 13/11/2010 19:23

Today at the playgroup Christmas Fair, one of the tombola prizes was a packet of Pom Bears. Coincidence? I think not. So own up - which one of you was it? I laughed out loud when I saw it.

nbee84 · 13/11/2010 19:31

Pom Bear on Facebook.

victoriascrumptious · 13/11/2010 19:32

I'd really really love to be friends with Mr & Mrs Chopsy. Seriously I would they sound like my ideal people. I seem to be meeting a lot of dull people recently.

GingerGlitterGoddess · 13/11/2010 19:35

The pombear website appears to have crashed Grin

JenniferCanesten · 13/11/2010 19:42

In my experience though, it's the people who seem normal who are actually the weirdest... probably Mr & Mrs SlightlyJaded, who think they're normal actually dress up like medieval pillocks and do re-enactments in muddy fields, and have a collection of china frogs in the living room.

Y'know. Just saying. Grin

Jammyrella · 13/11/2010 20:55

We were out this afternoon and bought a hungry DD a bag of Pom Bears as a snack. As we approached the car, where we had said she could eat them, DH (who has heard about this thread) said loudly, "Pom Bear, anyone?". I looked round to see if I could spot any smirking MNers, but sadly no :(

Wobblewatcher · 13/11/2010 21:29

This thread is stupidly funny. My face is tear stained.

I have updated FB.

OP can you keep this thread running by updating it every time you come into contact with these bloody wonderful people...

Popzie · 13/11/2010 21:56

This is to op, as have only read page one; I can't believe mners on this thread are defending these people for serving up heinz soup at a dinner party. It doesn't take much effort to get something decent in - a prepared meal for instance, especially if they have some help to heat it up. I think it shows a lack of respect to be honest. If they don't like cooking, why didn't they forget the food and get you around for just drinks? There are some unspoken rules whereby if you invite guests over you treat them right. Also, why does serving up shit food mean they are swingers? There is no correlation between the two. If this suggestion has come about because of the bum pinch, then that's a bit ott. That is a bit weird admittedly, but maybe they were pissed?

bathbuns · 13/11/2010 21:58

Popzie you need to read the thread. You are missing a seriously good laugh if you don't

BikeRunSki · 13/11/2010 22:09

DH has just made me read out selected excepts of this thread, to explain my tear inducing laughter.

He thinks Mr and Mrs B sound quite nice, and we are all being mean.
