Reform of the libel laws - add your support here

As you know we've been banging on about libel and the need to reform the current law since our not so private little spat with Gina Ford. So we're delighted to offer support to the Libel Reform Campaign, a joint campaign organised by the Index on Censorship, English PEN, and Sense about Science. The aim is to put pressure on the government to introduce legislation to reform the England's libel laws.

In the words of Jonathan Heawood, Director of English PEN: 'Our libel laws allow people accused of funding terrorism or dumping toxic waste in Africa to silence their critics, while 'super-injunctions' stop the public from even knowing that such allegations exist.' John Kampfner, CEO of Index on Censorship, says: 'If we don't act we're at risk of becoming a global pariah.' And Justine Roberts (who she?) adds: 'These are print laws for a digital age.'

Justice Secretary Jack Straw announced a review of libel laws at the end of last year, with the aim of introducing secondary legislation before the end of this parliament. If you'd like to pile the pressure on, please add your voice to the petition here.

Bumpety-bump

GrimmaTheNome · 07/01/2010 21:10

Today's developments? Have I missed something more newsworthy than Ross quitting BBC?

LadyBiscuit · 07/01/2010 21:26

Get your bum over here grimma

MmeLindt · 07/01/2010 21:32

Done

And twitted

YorkshireTeaDrinker · 07/01/2010 23:04

Very pertinent in the light of the recent thread butchery invoked by Hewhomustnotbenamed. Just added my name to the petition and sent the email to my MP.

GrimmaTheNome · 08/01/2010 09:10

Oh right, I stayed off that thread and its too long to read now but I can guess the jist of what happened.

aSilverLining · 08/01/2010 09:41

hbfac · 09/01/2010 12:16

Done. Thanks for making it easy to do.

Slightly embarrassed haven't done it before. It's v. true about the science issue, too. I'm a bit shocked that it took the "close to homeness" of this week to jolt me out of inertia.

Good luck mn.

Got a very prompt response from my MP(Phil Hope) today (I only emailed on tursday)

Thought I'd share his comments, he can't sign as he is a minister of State, despite understanding the sentiment & whether he agrees or not.

He has refered me to a working group being set up by Jack Straw to examine issues around libel & recommend reform. He also talks about publication proceedings & ongoing changes including there being a mandatory costs budgeting pilot in this area - he says that the government are also looking at taking further steps in this area, finally he refered me to the ongoing inqiry into press standards, privacy & libel promising that the government will seriously consider its recommendations.

Anyone else got a response yet?

imaginewittynamehere · 15/01/2010 15:47

Tursday? Tuesday

This is the latest appeal by science writer Simon Singh (for info see my comment earlier in this thread)

Dear Friends,

I?ve had an idea ? an unusual idea, but I think it might just work.

As you know, England?s chilling libel laws need to be reformed. One way to help achieve this is for 100,000 people to sign the petition for libel reform before the political parties write their manifestos for the election. We have 17,000 signatures, but we really need 100,000, and we need your help to get there.

libelreform

My idea is simple: if everyone who has already signed up persuades just one more person each week to sign the petition then we will reach our goal within a month!

One person per week is all we need, but please spread the word as much as you can. In fact, if you persuade 10 people to sign up then email me ([email protected]) and I promise to thank you by printing your name in my next book ? which I will start writing as soon as I have put my own libel case behind me. I cannot say when this will be, but it is a very real promise. My only caveat is that I will limit this to the first thousand people who recruit ten supporters.

When persuading your friends remember to tell them:

(a) English libel laws have been condemned by the UN Human Rights Committee.

(b) These laws gag scientists, bloggers and journalists who want to discuss matters of genuine public interest (and public health!).

(c) Our laws give rise to libel tourism, whereby the rich and the powerful (Saudi billionaires, Russian oligarchs and overseas corporations) come to London to sue writers because English libel laws are so hostile to responsible journalism. (In fact, it is exactly because English libel laws have this global impact that we welcome signatories to the petition from around the world.)

(d) Vested interests can use their resources to bully and intimidate those who seek to question them. The cost of a libel trial in England is 100 times more expensive than the European average and typically runs to over £1 million.

(e) Three separate ongoing libel cases involve myself and two medical researchers raising concerns about three medical treatments. We face losing £1 million each. In future, why would anyone else raise similar concerns? If these health matters are not reported, then the public is put at risk.

My experience has been sobering. I?ve had to spend £100,000 to defend my writing and have put my life on hold for almost two years. However, the prospect of reforming our libel laws keeps me cheerful.

Thanks so much for your support. We?ve only got one shot at this ? so I hope you can persuade 1 (or maybe 10) friends, family and colleagues to sign.

Massive thanks, Simon

(The Libel Reform Campaign is a coalition of English PEN, Index on Censorship and Sense About Science.)

the Libel Reform site links to mumsnet & this campaign: it would be great if more people could sign. Cheers!

probono · 14/02/2010 12:53

Great campaign. Get rid of the stupid newspaper privacy laws while at it.

mumoid · 14/02/2010 22:35

It is all part of an endemic corruption from which our legal system must strive to extradite itself.

I sign

Done, along with a letter to my MP.

It seems you have to be considerably wealthy to be able to afford freedom of speech. Desperately unfair.

Agree about the libel laws and the whole principle of gagging those who disagree with you.

Freedom of speech is more important than avoiding offending everyone. I wonder how many remember the rhyme from when we were kids. "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"

Mind you, there's a whole load of people not to far away who'd disagree and say "but if I am offended then you are being offensive"

onagar · 16/02/2010 15:06

Signed petition and will do a letter later.

Rhubarb · 18/02/2010 13:33

Done.

whingeomatic · 19/02/2010 11:15

Done, and had a response..

Mark Todd MP says while he agrees that the laws need reforming the examples quoted in the letter have been hyped by the media. Therefore he will not be signed the motion as the wording is "too extreme"...

Habbibu · 19/02/2010 20:27

Not sure if I count, being in Scotland - is Scottish law better in this instance?

ArcticRoll · 20/02/2010 10:53

Done
