MNHQ here: Want to make a change? Become a councillour

Hi,

We know that Mumsnet users feel that politics should be more representative. In fact, when we asked users about politics last year, 83% wanted to see more diversity among political figures, and 88% of users said they were highly interested in politics.

Therefore we wanted to highlight the National Association of Local Councils #MakeAChange campaign which includes shining a spotlight on underrepresented councillors to encourage people from all backgrounds and experiences to put themselves forward for election.

As part of the campaign, they have created a wealth of resources all about the process of becoming a councillor from start to finish, including details of the role and what to expect. You can also hear from councillours themselves on why they became councillors, what their role is at their local council and what they like about the role.

Find out more information about the #MakeAChange campaign here.

Thanks,
MNHQ.

Yes to the spelling error! Luckily, MN mods have an edit button even if we don't Grin

It's really important work. Not always rewarding, and sometimes quite stressful, but it's a key part of keeping government accountable. If we don't get involved at a grass roots level, we can't influence change.

The spelling needs sorting but I would agree with the sentiment.
Good, active, councillors really can make a difference to local people

Yes this is important - my local Parish Council is always desperate for councillors. They even let people volunteer for small specific jobs like monitoring playgrounds and tree wardens to encourage people on board.

Most of the Parish Councillors are retired, and getting older and it is the same with my local District Council.

If it is all too daunting, there are also parent governors needed in a lot of schools.

All political parties need to do more work to make them less toxic, at every level from branches to in Parliament.

But the men like that they take up all the space and keep the sweet spots for their bros.

Mine is entirely men over 60 now. We were 50:50 at one time, with a couple in their 50s.

Desperately need more young people and women involved.
