Should MN support a BPAS call for non-protest 'buffer zones' outside abortion clinics? Tell MNHQ what you think

Hello all

We've been contacted by the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, who want to know whether Mumsnet can support a call they're going to make for buffer zones around abortion clinics - and as ever we'd like to run it past MNers to see what you think.

Here's what BPAS say:

'Over recent years there has been an escalation in anti-abortion activity outside clinics in the UK. Women attending pregnancy advice and abortion centres are now regularly exposed to groups of anti-abortion activists standing directly outside. Many of these protesters bear large banners of dismembered foetuses, distribute leaflets containing misleading information about abortion, and follow and question women as they enter or leave the centres. Often, these people carry cameras strapped to their chests or positioned on a tripod. Women report feeling intimidated and distressed by this activity as they try to access a lawful healthcare service in confidence. Pregnant staff at clinics have on occasion needed escorting from the building by the police. Recently, NHS staff on premises where a clinic is located have felt so intimidated by the presence outside they have asked for the abortion service to be withdrawn. The closure of a service as a result of anti-abortion activity would be unprecedented.'

'We believe enough is enough.'

'One in three women will have an abortion in her lifetime. We are a society which values freedom of speech, but also one where the vast majority of us support a woman’s access to abortion services. The right to protest needs to be balanced with the right of pregnant women to obtain advice and treatment in confidence and free from intimidation. For those who wish to campaign to restrict women’s reproductive choices, there are plenty of opportunities and locations in which to do so. The space immediately outside a clinic need not and should not not be one of them.'

'Women should feel confident that they can approach centres for advice and services without fear of intimidation, or anxious that their identity will be compromised by protesters filming outside. Establishing access zones free from anti-abortion activists around clinics would provide the reassurance and security women need. We urge all political parties to act to protect women as they make their own personal decision about their pregnancy. Women deserve nothing less.'

We know MNers tend to feel fairly strongly about abortion and that there are views on both sides of this debate - so do please let us know what you think.

Thanks

MNHQ

HoneyBadger... Sorry, but my account was factually completely accurate. He did tell me and others that we had brought our rapes on ourselves... apart from one lucky woman, who I suspect is clinging to that pat on the head from him.

Aduaz... How dare you, after what you said to women who had been raped, including me, suggest I am a liar! Your views are abhorrent. They are abusive. Shut up.

Aduaz · 29/11/2014 20:45

BuffytheReasonableFeminist so what you feel is that the protests aren't harassment according to the law, but you want them to become so? Just have to check because I'm not sure.

therealwildeone · 29/11/2014 20:46

and i love the idea that the best way to deal with opposing opinions, like aduaz (or myself), is to silence them. now THAT is fascist.
with an 's'

BIWI · 29/11/2014 20:46

Oh hello, therealwildeone - where have you suddenly popped up from?

FrauHelgaMissMarpleandaChuckle · 29/11/2014 20:47

The law on this wrt harassment is clear, Aduaz. Your opinion means jack shit. The people whose opinion matter is the women who are attempting to access the abortion clinics.

therealwildeone · 29/11/2014 20:48

i've always been here.
and always will be.
and i mean that metaphorically, and literally.

BIWI · 29/11/2014 20:48

Nope. An AS of your name shows that you're only on this thread.

PuffinsAreFictitious · 29/11/2014 20:49

Anyway, hiding this now, it's being crayonned on by a man who has admitted yet again, that he believes women are to blame for being raped.

Shame, up until he came on, it was a useful and interesting discussion, with lots of differing points of view and a lot of compassion.

flippinada · 29/11/2014 20:49

This chap can argue semantics over harrassment as much as he likes. More people will support this campaign than not and the majority of people don't agree with his mealy mouthed opinions.

Personally, I'm delighted MN are behind this campaign and I hope it's a success. I've written to my MP and shared the No Bites campaign on social media. Lets hope lots of others do the same.

Icimoi · 29/11/2014 20:49

a woman can still access medical care with peace and dignity if there is a protest outside. She just ignores what the protesters are saying and carries on.

How easy do you imagine is to "just ignore" protesters with peace and dignity if you are a 15 year old made pregnant through rape, Aduaz? Or if you are having to abort only after endless agonising because there is a very high risk of severe disability, or because your personal circumstances are such that you absolutely cannot continue with a pregnancy which might be your only chance of having a child?

The fallacy in much of your argument is that you assume that if the component parts of any course of conduct are in themselves legal then that conduct cannot constitute harassment. Yes, it is legal to take photographs, but if you are clearly waving cameras around with the implied or express threat that any photographs will be publicised with invitations to vilify the subject of those photographs, that becomes illegal.

FrauHelgaMissMarpleandaChuckle · 29/11/2014 20:49

If a black person was telling me I was a racist, and they were offended by what I was saying, I wouldn't keep banging on - I'd take a long hard look at myself and what it was I was saying that was causing such offense.

Because, if you aren't the minority group, quite simply you CANNOT know what it feels like.

BIWI,
does a screenname define a person?! i was using a 'royal' pronoun...in simple terms, 'I' refers to a collective group. and we are legion.
let me rephrase...
we have always been here
we will always be here
and we are legion

SevenZarkSeven · 29/11/2014 20:53

Well given that you haven't got a clue about the UK laws around hate speech, or have any idea about what the suffragettes got up to, despite referencing them in your posts, I'm not sure anyone needs to give much weight to the assertions you make in your posts Smile

BOFster · 29/11/2014 20:53

I've only read the OP. I say yes.

FrauHelgaMissMarpleandaChuckle · 29/11/2014 20:54

TheRealWildOne -Jesus Christ are you the fucking Borg?

Catch a fucking grip of yourself - massive superiority complex happening right there.

I mean this "Of course you can rant on about how politicians and others back then shouldn't have had to be "harassed" or "intimidated" by suffragists protests, the truth is there wasn't any harassment. They were just being inconvenienced and forced to listen to the other side of the argument and they didn't like it. "

I'd be interested to hear you say that you were completely wrong in that post, and therefore foolish to write about things in order to make a point which you actually didn't know anything about Smile
