EDCM Campaign against cuts to benefits paid to parents of disabled children

KateMumsnet · 12/12/2011 10:08

Hello

Today Every Disabled Child Matters, with whom we worked on our Respite Care Campaign, is calling on the government to rethink its decision to cut support for up to 170,000 families who have disabled children.

The Welfare Reform Bill proposes to cut benefits paid to low income or out of work families with disabled children by 50%. This amounts to a drop of £1400 per year - although these families often face higher basic costs than others, and may also find it harder to get employment which allows them to continue caring for their children.

If you'd like to write to the PM and ask him to reconsider, EDCM have made it easy to do so via this link. And don't forget to let us know what you think here on the thread.

Thanks

MNHQ

Done. D.C. has no problem dishing out millions in foreign aid, millions on the Oympics and millions in cold weather payments still going to ex- pats living in hot climates. He has done his level best along with a lot of the media to label people on benefit's as the lowest of the low and nothing better than scroungers. He would have us believe it is the majority and not the minority ripping off the benefit system. So now is it the majority paying for the sins of a few?.

Have been directed over here from AIBU. The thread title is really confusing, I thought that it was a thread to discuss the cuts, and therefore only for those with disabled children, who really understand how the cuts will effect them.

Any chance for a different thread title Mumsnet? One that reflects the fact that we all can actually do something to help?

Glitterknickaz · 13/12/2011 17:37

See this is why I posted the AIBU, there was so little happening I wondered if people didn't realise?

deepandcrispandsevenfold · 13/12/2011 17:41

MrsTittleMouse I have reported your post to mn hq, in the hope it will get them to change it. you are quite right

JuliaScurr · 13/12/2011 17:42

hunty you don't necessarily need to stop feeling stabby, just get a big picture of any member of the current cabinet to practice on

CardyMow · 13/12/2011 18:36

Julia - I'm not sure whether to start with Dave Scameron or Prick Clegg. I am completely unable to tell where Dave Scameron's arse ends, and Prick Clegg begins.

I shall just have to get a bit stabby at both of them. Grin

Peachy · 13/12/2011 19:00

amounts carers nigh on halved? wow

Glitterknickaz · 13/12/2011 19:08

No Peachy that's a premium for calculation of council tax benefit.
Carers is £58.45 next year.

CardyMow · 13/12/2011 19:11

Glitter - is Peachy possibly talking about the year after next, when UC comes in?

Peachy · 13/12/2011 19:12

I was talking about the rates here whatever that may be. Mind, me and numbers- nah. me and numbers when panicking- oh god no.

Glitterknickaz · 13/12/2011 19:14

No, it's with regard to 2012 DWP figures.
Carers Allowance is going up by £2 something (woop!) Hmm
There's a figure further down that says Carers but that's for CTB calculations.

zebrafinch · 13/12/2011 19:47

emailed no 10. I'd love to know if the policy people who devise these cuts stop for a minute and ask some carers about the law of unexpected consequences. They should be ashamed.

A quick but relevant hijack - this has just been brought to my attention:

"Save Independent Living Fund from closure ( Save ILF ).

Responsible department: Department for Work and Pensions

In a Written Statement dated 13 December 2010 the Under-Secretary of State for Work and Pensions (Maria Miller) stated that the ILF is "financially unsustainable", was already closed to new applications and that existing recipients were only protected for the life of this Parliament (i.e. 2015). For over 21 years the ILF has made payments to disabled people to be used towards the cost of employing Personal Assistants. This money currently enables over 20,000 disabled people to lead an independent life style. The Governments policy indicates that responsibility for independent living strategies would be passed to Local Authorities. This is unacceptable. The LA's are unlikely to have the funding or the in house expertise to assess the needs of the small numbers of disabled people in their areas who would benefit from the kind of support ILF provides. The ILF does have the expertise and experience so the Government should reverse the decision to close the ILF."

misshappinessandmissflower · 13/12/2011 20:21

Done it.

AmberLeaf · 13/12/2011 20:27

Ive just signed that Tallwivglasses.

Can anyone tell me, if your child gets MRC and you get carers now, what will these changes mean under the PIP proposals? I thought I read that PIP wouldnt initially apply to children?

It all seems as though you need to have HRC to qualify in these proposals?

Is MRC going? what will happen to those on MRC?

Sorry for all the rambly questions.

Glitterknickaz · 13/12/2011 20:37

PIP is for 16-64 initially but I think they want to roll it out to children and pensioners in due course.

I think 'severe disability' is now going to mean HRC and MRC is now going to be the equivalent of LRC. LRC is being abolished.

tallwivglasses · 13/12/2011 21:16

Does anyone get that rising, panicky feeling in the middle of the night? You know, the one where you feel, how the hell am I going to deal with this or pay for that/get through tomorrow/stay fit and alive forever? I somehow think there's going to be a few more nights like that ahead.

I've just given ds a bit of a wibbly goodnight hug. He thought it was funny Smile

MmeLindor. · 13/12/2011 21:18

Done

I don't think that MNetters are uncaring, but many just do not know or understand what cuts are being discussed, and how they will really affect parents of disabled children.

And who could even imagine that the politicians would do something like this?

ouryve · 13/12/2011 21:21

tallwivglasses - done.

tallwivglasses · 13/12/2011 21:23

Nice one. Could MNHQ get someone in for a webchat? There's loads of questions here. Or if anyone's aware of a website that might know the score...

MmeLindor. · 13/12/2011 21:26

Could MNHQ use their contacts to persuade a couple of journos to write about this?

India Knight would be great, she is always terrific on disability issues.

tallwivglasses · 13/12/2011 21:26

shit, the ouch messageboard is no more! BBC cuts probably.

Bloody tories Xmas Wink

fannybanjo · 13/12/2011 21:27
