Stop the Abolition of DLA

Glitterknickaz · 16/01/2011 13:19

The government are proposing to get rid of DLA in favour of PIP. full consultation here

Riven started a fantastic thread in Chat with the very pertinent point that this applies to everyone, that every one of us could be just one step from disability themselves.

There is NOTHING in the media about this. These proposals could mean poverty for the disabled and their families in this country. It could leave some in residential care completely isolated from their families and support networks through the removal of the mobility component.

My family has already been hit three times through the NHS, education and aiming high, via the cuts, if they now remove the money from our pockets we are going to be in a heat or eat situation.

Please MNHQ do something, as many are oblivious to these proposals and what they will mean, including those who themselves already claim DLA.

Well done you! 30 is a bit disappointing though. This is why The Broken of Britain is more about alternative campaigning - not many disabled people can or want (due to disability, illness or fear) to physically protest!

kemeva · 24/01/2011 20:59

Dear Janvier, Hossylass and Rhydian,

Thank you for your comments and encouragement.

I have already written to our MP, Hilary Benn and planning to take our son to his surgery next week.

Also signed petitions of different organisations and completed surveys E.g. www.LCDisability.org./campaigns

Thanks for the broken of britain link. I've heard about it but could not find it (I was looking for Broken Britain).

I will write a letter including my post to the minister, David Cameron too. We might even get involved with the media. However that's always a double edged sword and controlled by the journalists' editors' agenda...

Lot of my friends and professionals (e.g. GP, SW)I contacted also did their part by signing petitions and writing to their MPs.

Let's hope our voice will be loud enough to be heard in the Commons and Lords.

Best wishes,

Eva (on behalf of Adam)

I will keep

Where has the STOP THE ABOLITION of DLA gone from Mumsnet's home-page?

It took me ages to find this thread again!

Please Mumsnet include this thread in your topics, campaigns!

Thanks!

janvier · 24/01/2011 21:48

Took me ages to find it too. I thought it had been taken off!
Apparently Mencap and other organisations are meeting with Maria Miller (Minister for the Disabled) and MP's at Westminster on 9th Feb, they want as many people to attend as poss.
You can find details on the Mencap website

Bravo to you, you are a star. Must be some way of getting Media attention, any ideas anyone?

kate1956 · 24/01/2011 21:59

new statesman article which is good

MissQue · 24/01/2011 23:13

Good article Kate Smile

I'm pretty angry this evening that none of this was covered on the 10 o clock news, but so much airtime was given to a couple of tosser sports presenters making sexist comments.

Hossylass · 25/01/2011 02:06

Eva, thanks for finding the spoons to campaign, you are a star.

Cage - what can I say? I am applauding you, and hoping you wont be laid up for days with exhaustion.
Campaining uses a huge amount of adrenalin...

Disabled children of the past, the present and those not yet born owe you all a huge debt of gratitude.

We will, given enough voices, convince people that we will not continue to be demonised, harrassed and deprived.

I am horrifeid by the future, not just for me, probably not even for me - I have other plans - but for your children when they are adults and may no longer have you or the state to provide for them, and for you as exhausted and penalised parents.

lisa1cares · 25/01/2011 06:22

Hi All not sure if you see this yet but a good one to be passing around so more can understand what the sick and disabled are facing

hope your all doing ok and thanks for all that protested against these changes

BillBarton · 25/01/2011 08:55

someone give me a good excuse for harrasing/upsetting people in a call centre at ATOS, if your child did it would you be proud? simply no excuse, shame on you

BillBarton · 25/01/2011 09:00

you know why this forum has been sidelined.....because it is full of people who think the rules do not apply to them, pathetic

Just listened/watched (ok, ok I like seeing the timer Grin ) of the youtube clip lisa1cares. A very thought provoking protest, though for maximum impact it would have been good if he could have spoken to the people who actually work the decisions, rather than the bods on the phone.
The questions asked by ATOS are designed to make it nigh on impossible to "pass" them and can be twisted by the healthcare professional asking them. For example, shopping:

1: Do you do your own shopping yourself?. Then you are mobile, can get to the shops and can interact with others. Incidentally my own interaction consists of mumbling "thank you" when someone sorts the self-scan out.

2: Do you phone up someone and ask for help? Yes, then you can use a phone and have no problems with interaction.

3: Do you order online? Yes, then you can use a computer and can therefore use one for work. You can also comprehend instructions and concentrate.

Any problems with pain, with fluctuating mobility, with the length of time between shopping trips, with the ability to use judgement and reasoning and to concentrate can be ignored.

ThePosieParker · 25/01/2011 10:05

I have a suggestion if someone could compose a letter highlighting the important parts of the argument, I don't know enough, and then all of us either send a Valentine card to our local MP/council/MP responsible.

Valentine and hearts are a really good tool.

MmeLindt · 25/01/2011 10:11

Sorry, have not been around all weekend. Have blogged about this, will post on twitter, so if anyone is on Twitter could you please RT.

MmeLindt · 25/01/2011 10:22

Is it ok that I have taken a couple of the stories from this thread for my blog post? I have not put names on.

Rhydian · 25/01/2011 10:46

Get your MP to sign the Early Day Motion on the Disability Living Allowance Consultation - bit.ly/hEtnc8

BillBarton

We get it - you don't like us. Why are you here then? A bit pathetic, no?

coppertop · 25/01/2011 11:00

I've come really late to this thread. Blush

Could someone possibly give me a quick summary of what I can do to help?

I can write to our MP but is there something else that's been mentioned?

MmeLindt · 25/01/2011 11:13

Coppertop
Petition here

More info here

The idea was raised by Posie of sending Valentine Cards to MPs to highlight the issue, since the deadline is 14th Feb-

ThisIsANiceCage · 25/01/2011 11:16

Sign petition here against abolition of DLA.

Check out One Month Before Heartbreak if you have time - it's a central campaign linking to many others.

Challenge people who refer to benefit scroungers. Of course there are a fraudsters in all walks of life, but under cover of dealing with them, successive govts are making very deep cuts affecting the very vulnerable - exactly the people each govt says its going to look after. Our MNer in the news last week is typical, not exceptional - and that's before the next set of cuts bite.
