Stop the Abolition of DLA

The government are proposing to get rid of DLA in favour of PIP. full consultation here

Riven started a fantastic thread in Chat with the very pertinent point that this applies to everyone, that every one of us could be just one step from disability themselves.

There is NOTHING in the media about this. These proposals could mean poverty for the disabled and their families in this country. It could leave some in residential care completely isolated from their families and support networks through the removal of the mobility component.

My family has already been hit three times through the NHS, education and aiming high, via the cuts, if they now remove the money from our pockets we are going to be in a heat or eat situation.

Please MNHQ do something, as many are oblivious to these proposals and what they will mean, including those who themselves already claim DLA.

WB have you been assessed for AS?

What if one 'could' get around their disability with a bit of positive thinking. They still wouldn't be on an even keel with those who think positively who 'don't' have a disability. DLA goes someway to help address that.

WilliamBarton · 22/01/2011 14:08

no peachy, i was on about GlitterNikNax, anywho

and yes my examples were diverse but the thing they have in common is to highlight the effect of individual attitude, having a safe place to share grief, loss, despair is important, equaly important is a push to get up, dust down and carry on, metaphoricaly of course. in fact perhaps more important.

gunna leave this chat now, let you all get on with it. take care.

StartingAfresh · 22/01/2011 14:19

WB you're right about 'energy' and that it can be used to get through life but what you have failed to recognise is that the majority of people don't sit in a pool of hopelessness whinging about who is going to help them.

This is what you have suggested and it is quite frankly out of order and demonstrative of your ignorance.

Whinging about cuts to DLA and support in general is so far down on the list of essential tasks which is exacly why the government are able to do this to us.

Your rigidity of thought is not something I'll hold against you. Nor your social skills.

ThisIsANiceCage · 22/01/2011 14:21

Monday. I'm going to try to go. Is there any point me "taking you with me"?

If people think it's a good idea, I could make a small banner with your pics.

Slogan (better suggestions welcome): "Too sick to protest. Threatened by cuts."

I want to discuss first, as using energy to organise this threatens me being able to attend. But would it work for people to email me a pic which I'd print out and stick on the banner?

(I would treat your info like any other personal info covered by the DPA and deleted it after use. A first name or nickname to write under the pic would be useful.)

What do you think?

Mouseface · 22/01/2011 14:29

Great post YeB Smile

Mouseface · 22/01/2011 14:32

Cage

Would you take a pic of Nemo (DS's nickname) please? I wish I could go with you.

Please don't risk your health...... are you sure you'll be ok?

Some things are worth it - I don't have children to care for so it's only myself I'm affecting.

Will sort out dedicated email address for this and PM you shortly.

ThisIsANiceCage · 22/01/2011 14:51

If it gets too much, I'll be the one lying on the roll-mat sobbing while screwing up what would have been a great press opportunity, if the press arrive.

But frankly most of my high street have seem me in a similar state when I've had to go to the bank or whatever. Things like personal dignity went a very, very long time ago.

Mouseface · 22/01/2011 15:22

Thanks Cage. Have e-mailed you. Smile

ThisIsANiceCage · 22/01/2011 15:37

Thanks mouseface - safely gathered in!

What the Government is planning to do to my son and his wife disgusts me:
I am an older mother of a disabled son who has a disabled wife, both 44 years old. We struggled for years to help my son. He is blind with hand difficulty and epilepsy. He worked until he could no longer do so but has the consolation of a lovely wife who is confined to a wheelchair and has epilepsy. After a long search they found the perfect home in residential care. To reduce their seizures they keep active in the local community, a vital aspect of their everyday life. We thought all was well until the government dropped a bomb on their world. It has announced that it will take away all their mobility allowance which they need to pay for transport to go out. When my son was told he collapsed and had to be hospitalised. Neither their care home nor their local authority can possibly afford to pay their DLA mobility allowances which come from the DWP. They are so frightened that they will be trapped in their home unable to go out to their courses, exercise class, library and church. They have nightmares about it. No family live near them who can help. I have written to every MP in the House of Commons because I dont know how else I can help them. If they are confined in their home they will despair, have more seizures and be given more drugs. How could any government do this to such vulnerable disabled people who have no other resources? Can anyone help?

Mouseface · 22/01/2011 16:15

Oh Greycoat Sad

It's just so awful that people like your son and his wife will be hit like this.

Other than shouting from the roof tops, signing petitions, going on arranged marches, contacting the Powers That Be.....

I just don't know what we can do to stop this from happening.

It sickens me.

sparkler66 · 22/01/2011 16:41

Hi All

If you could all find the time to sign up to the Mencap campaign to protect Disability Living Allowance Mobility Component @
e-activist.com/ea-campaign/clientcampaign.do?ea.client.id=78&ea.campaign.id=8727&ea.param.extras=source:Protect

It would be of enormous help

Thank you

Mouseface · 22/01/2011 17:03

Sparkler

That address doesn't work for me. Will go have a look on Mencap.

Glitterknickaz · 22/01/2011 17:31

What is the actual motivation for the personal attacks against me?

Why are they being allowed to stand?

OP posts:
2shoes · 22/01/2011 17:32

i did report again(been lurking) but they seem to be on holiday today

StartingAfresh · 22/01/2011 17:37

mouseface I don't believe that anything CAN be done right now, but I do believe it is important to register in all the right ways public outrage etc.

It is important for history and important for our future.

Rhydian · 22/01/2011 17:47

StartingAfresh and Mouseface

There is something you can do - get everyone you know to sign this petition against DLA reform and help to promote The Broken of Britain.

We've got things going on in the Welsh Assembly and Scottish Parliament; soon in the Commons and Lords; trying to get Mumsnet aboard; trying to get media coverage in any way we can.

Everyone in our campaign is disabled or a carer, and we're not going to back off on this one. So please don't give up!

Glitterknickaz · 22/01/2011 17:52

Do you know what? Fuck it.
We'll sink into oblivion quietly rather than offend sensibilities ok?

Rhydian · 22/01/2011 17:59

Oblivion? My heart's wonky so they wouldn't let me on any rides at Alton Towers - is it any good?

Rhydian I have signed, and read some of the statements on the block with awe.
Peachy, DD is great thanks, good to see you on here. Smile
Glitter, I have no idea why that clueless idiot troll targeted you, but I think it's gone now, if that's any solace.

thereiver · 22/01/2011 18:16

agreed re pensioners i know many who use their heating money to but christmas presents, meanwhile those on dla with illness requiring them to keep warm get nothing

Mouseface · 22/01/2011 18:23

Glitter

Stay away from the bridge dweller. I reported too.
