Lighter Later: 10:10 calls for UK to switch to Central European Time

RowanMumsnet · 01/11/2010 11:40

As some of you will know, 10:10 - along with some tourist and road safety organisations - is calling for the UK to make a permanent switch to Central European Time (GMT+2 in the summer, and GMT+1 in the winter). Some studies suggest that this would save on carbon emissions, reduce road deaths, provide a boost to tourism revenue, and increase general wellbeing by providing more opportunities for social activities and outdoor pursuits during the winter evenings.

In the past, opposition to this suggestion has focused on its impact on people in Scotland, but a recent report by the Policy Studies Institute argues that the move would be beneficial for Scotland overall.

On 3 December the Daylight Saving Bill will receive its second reading in Parliament. The bill calls for the government to conduct a cross-departmental cost-benefit analysis of the clock change. If the benefits are confirmed, it calls for a three-year trial to be enacted. Click here if you'd like to ask your MP to support the bill.

And as ever, do let us know your thoughts.

Rockbird, I am with you on the immovablity of the meridian fact.

Eleison · 01/11/2010 22:00

No, Awitch. 5pm. But not light till. But a month or so from now, that would mean 4pm again and not light till 9am.

trice · 01/11/2010 22:01

I support lighter later. It will be better for everyone including the scots, it just makes sense to me to have the daylight where we can all use it for as much of the time as possible.

Eleison · 01/11/2010 22:01

But not light till--

Awitch · 01/11/2010 22:01

nope. don't understand. i am fated never to get this.

i just know that last week it was dark in the mornings and now it is dark in the afternoon. mornings please!

Awitch · 01/11/2010 22:03

the phrase 'but not light till' is not making any sense to me at all. i am an idiot.

Eleison · 01/11/2010 22:04

I have just added complete lack of mastery of the English language to our lack of mastery of time. GrinSoz.

Awitch · 01/11/2010 22:05

lol.

Valpollicella · 01/11/2010 22:06

Could I ask someone to explain this to me in words of as few syllables as possible? Confused Blush

I am reasonably clever but the (and ohms and volts) I cannot make myself understand

I've asked DP to explain before but I still didn't get it

HabbiBOOOO · 01/11/2010 22:07

See, darkness getting to you already, Awitch.

HabbiBOOOO · 01/11/2010 22:08

Eleison's intimation that clock devices are becoming sentient and independent from humans strikes me as a far more worthy campaign cause.

I don't remember what 10:10 is.

Yes. Then it would be light until five but only for a month.
No one has planned for Jan/Feb but we will all be snowed in/buggered so that makes it ok. We will emerge pale and traumatised in May, blinking at the sun.

My sundial will be rendered useless until June.

Awitch · 01/11/2010 22:19

10am???!!! really? is that even humanly possible?

Awitch · 01/11/2010 22:21

oh no i do not like this plan. i would almost certainly return to bed after dropping dd1 at school and sleep in for whole day.

is this part of a cleggeron plan to punish scotland for not voting for them?

saorachd · 01/11/2010 22:25

Yes Awitch, it is.

I don't know how he is going to deal with the earth's tilt yet but I'm sure he has someone on the case.

Awitch · 01/11/2010 22:25

michael fucking gove, probably.

saorachd · 01/11/2010 22:27

or Boris

Not many Scottish Tories to choose from..

Awitch · 01/11/2010 22:29

(you know i don't understand the earth's tilt thing either... if you could try to explain without using the word 'till' i would be really grateful).

abdnhiker · 01/11/2010 22:32

Where I live (and I've looked it up) in mid-January the sun rises at 8:40 am and sets at 4pm, so the kids do get to walk to primary schoold in daylight both ways. If we change our clocks as suggested, the sun will rise at 9:40, meaning they are travelling to school in pitch darkness in mid-winter, and in twilight for a longer period. Sorry, this is a non-starter for me and is a great way to make Scotland (and parts of Northern England or Northern Ireland) feel rather unloved...

saorachd · 01/11/2010 22:32

In winter the northern hemisphere is furthest from the sun so it gets darker for longer the further north you are.
Vice versus in summer when it never gets dark in shetland.

Awitch · 01/11/2010 22:33

oh i see yes. so we just have less light here in winter and should manage it separate to england, yes? Wink

prettybird · 01/11/2010 22:33

My dh (100% Scottish), my dad and my mum (when she was still able tp express opinions) also believe that GMT+1 for winter would be a good thing - so I am not the only Scot to think this Grin (...and BTW - my family are not and never have been tories!)

A lot of my friends think the same thing.

The gritters will be out later with their teaspoonful of salt and the roads will be slippy with black ice. Just as children are walking to school.

Can't we just arm wrestle Dave and send him homeward tae think again?
