Hi,

I'm 35 weeks with b/g twins and starting to feel a bit fed up.

My consultant is planning a natural birth as both are head down and has said I'll be induced in the 38th or 39th week if nothing happens naturally by then.

But I'm really hoping the 37 average I keep reading everywhere is acurate.

I've heard some mums deliver at 32 weeks and others at 40 so perhaps that's why the average is 37 and I'm just destined for the long haul.

Would be good to hear your thoughts and experiences.

38+5 with elective cs - though as twin 1 was unstable and twin 2 had been breech since week 24 not sure how else the powers-that-be thought they were coming out - and they were 6lb 9 and 7lb 12 respectively.

I was 40+3 with b/g twins who are now 18 weeks and were 7lb3 and 5lb6 born. I laboured spontaneously and delivered naturally without any assistance. They were my 3rd and 4th babies and my labours were 1. 60 hours (natural delivery with no instrumental assistance, pethidine and TENS), 2. 12 hours (natural at home, TENS) and 3. 10 hours with the twins (TENS, Entonox, Water pool). Both twins had been head down at every check up since 26 weeks but at my 40 week check up twin2 was breech (ultrasound so she definitely was). The MLU were prepared to delivery her breech (with obstetrician's supervision) and had re-trained staff in case as the cervix has already stretched for the head of the first twin and delivering breech twin2 is easier and safer than a breech singleton. In the end she had turned head down again for the birth and the obstetrician just checked she was coming out the right way round and then went away. The whole birth was handled by just two midwives (1 main and 1 assistant) and the consultant midwife to supervise as I had chosen. The hospital offers induction at 38 weeks as there is a research paper which has found twins have better outcomes if born at 38 weeks. Having read the paper I could see some holes in their research and decided I felt a preterm IOL posed more of a risk than a spontaneous labour at 40 weeks. 40 weeks is still the gestation length of twin pregnancy, they just prefer to get them out at 38. I was glad they'd had the extra 2 weeks for the little one to grow. The birth was great. I would not have changed it at all. Other than maybe to be at home but I felt that was one risk too many for twin2.

Hi,

After all your lovely comments I thought I'd let you know how things progressed.

Imogen and Isaac were born at 38+4 weighing 6lb 5oz and 5lb 3oz.

The birth was induced and I had an epidural and forceps - on reflection it was a very positive birth experience. We were all allowed home straightaway.

The twins are now 6 weeks and we are just about getting used to the sleepless nights. They are a real joy and we feel very blessed.

Good luck to everyone else. They're worth the wait.

Hi there
I was 35+5, identical twin boys sharing the same placenta, c-section (kind of planned). My blood pressure was very unstable, i was in hospital for 3 days before my doctor decided to do the surgery - i must say that it was a relief, couldn't wait any longer, could barelyt breath the night before i gave birth. twins were 2.560kg and 2.520kg and lukily they didn't have to stay in ICU.
