Quadruple pushchair or double pushchairs and slings?

sunshinesuperwoman · 25/06/2025 12:45

I’m expecting our 2nd set of twins in August, our boys will be 22 months old so they are still in their pushchair for longer walks. We already have a double pushchair but I’m looking at possibly getting a quad pushchair for. I can’t work out if it would be better for me just to stick with the double pushchair and then wear the babies in a tandem sling, or whether to invest in a quadruple pushchair?.
it’s not too difficult when DH is out with us as I have an extra set of hands, but if it’s just me I want to be as hands free as possible

Has anyone had experiences with both and if so which did you prefer? Thank you ☺️

So I don't have multiples but I do have the same age gap and considered a sling and a single. I'm really pleased I got a double as so often you just need everyone strapped in e.g. the doctor's. I still used a sling a lot though.

UnbeatenMum · 25/06/2025 13:29

I'm not a multiple parent but did have a small age gap. I think you'll want the quad at some point even if you don't in the first couple of months. Lots of children use a pushchair up to around age 4, particularly on day trips or longer walks so when you have two 2 year olds and two nearly 4 year olds it will be essential. You just won't want to be pushing a pushchair and carrying two babies at the same time once they're over a certain weight.

Ahsheeit · 25/06/2025 13:37

Go for the quad. It'll save you a lot of hassle getting out and about. Triplet mum here.

sunshinesuperwoman · 25/06/2025 13:41

Thank you everyone, I was leaning more towards a quad pushchair, so I’m glad to see it’s been confirmed it’s the right way to go.l

Mum of 3 here- I’d say go for both if you can. There will be times one baby will want to be held while the others are happy in the pushchair or playing etc. Tge sling is also handy at home while you cook or clean etc.
My childminder has a quad buggy and they are certainly bulky but tbh I don’t think you have an option. Good luck, that is certainly going to be a handful!

Ahsheeit · 25/06/2025 14:35

If you can find one with suspension, go for it! One inline triple one I had left me with neck muscles like Arnie from going up and down kerbs. Definitely more selection than there was 25 of years ago.

I think like you said a sling would be good in the house, I used my sling a lot when the boys were tiny and it was really useful. I suppose I could have a baby who hates the sling as well so would be good to have a pushchair too, they are quite bulky but I can cope with that for a little while.
And thank you, I need all the luck I can get😂.

I don’t think your baby will dislike the sling. Tbh I think this is first baby thinking (as I did), when you have your second and third and they don’t have a choice they quickly get used to it. Trust me, you will need a sling. I’d ask anyone with second or third babies this same question and you will find the same answer.

This will be my 3rd and 4th baby, so I doubt it’s first baby thinking!.
One of my boys didn’t like the sling, it would’ve been easier to tandem carry both boys but as he got older he didn’t like the sling so I had to adapt, I’ll be doing the same with these babies.

You might want to think about how much walking you will be doing. I had a triple but it was so heavy to push, I didn’t end up using it that much. My twins were 17 months when the third was born. I mostly ended up just using the single and the older two walked. We generally went to places where I could park nearby so the walk was short. I would consider that life might not look the same as it did with twins. In comparison I walked everywhere with just twins, caught the bus etc. Although we also did move so different amenities as well

LionWings · 13/07/2025 10:18

Also not sure which one you are thinking of getting - but the one we had was such a pain to take apart, I avoided putting it in the car

sunshinesuperwoman · 13/07/2025 11:12

@LionWings we do walk frequently which is why I was on the fence about a quadruple pushchair as they can be quite bulky. I’ve been watching some reviews and have found a couple that seem decent so I’ll give them a go and hope for the best!.

I wonder if you might have to accept that your needs will be changing a lot over the next year or so and accept that you will be getting through a lot of pushchairs.
With this in mind, I wonder if you could be more creative. Is there such a thing as a triple with one “seat” which takes a carrycot and put both of the newborns in that together with your older twins having a seat each? If you can get one with a buggy board, that might give you other options too.
In six months time (so when the new babies can sit) one of those cart type set ups might be your best bet when you have all four of them.
Good luck!

LionWings · 13/07/2025 12:24

Yeah, we walked/bussed everywhere too, but not once I had the third! Do also be prepared for the many many comments…

There’s an American brand, I think it’s Zoë prams.
They have a double pram with a double front attachment. So you could use as a quad pram when alone, but detach and use as double if taking two doubles our with your dh or in future when elder twins are a bit older and you might not need quad on daily basis

I think it will just be trial and error for a while, I have looked at buggy boards but can’t seem to see if we could attach them to a double pushchair or if we could have 2 of them. Will look into it a bit more!

That’s what I’m looking forward to the least! I already get a lot with the boys but having 4 under 2, especially 2 sets of twins just feels like I won’t be able to move for people wanting to have a chat!.

triplet mum here.

Zoe is great but and 3+ child pushchair is heavy.

maybe look at the ABC and once the babies can sit up at maybe 1 year a folding wagon like the wonderfold may be useful for out and about trips but not for naps.

My second didn't like the sling, he preferred the baby carrier that allowed him to face forward and he screamed blue murder every time he had to be tied up to the buggy to pick his brother at nursery. He didn't have a choice, but he definitely did not "slot in"

Ahsheeit · 16/07/2025 09:39

Forgot to mention - when my triplets got to aged 2, I used a double fold up McLaren with a buggy board.

Musicaltheatremum · 16/07/2025 09:45

Mum of 2 here, now aged 29 and 32!
Two sets of twins under 3. All I can say is respect and wish you well....hope you get the pram/ transport things sorted.

leavesandsleeves · 21/07/2025 19:59

We had the same gap, 22 months, but a singleton and then twins. Respect to you, 2 sets of twins under 2!

We had a double for the twins (tandem then side by side) and the 22 month old generally preferred to walk. But he was in childcare during the day so my husband was mostly around when it was all 3 so had that extra set of hands. The 22 month sometimes went in a push trike we already owned.

All kids are different though and they might not want to walk, plus it would be a different story having 2 walking and only 1 of you! Unless you used reins maybe. Haven’t used them but could suit your situation. I think as someone else said you might have to accept that you end up going through a few different strollers over the next couple of years.

If it were me, I don’t think a carrier would cut it - I’ve only used the single ones but I would think the twin ones are harder to manage, would get heavy fast, and would be a bit of a nightmare while also tackling 2 toddlers. I gather you will have all 4 and be walking quite a bit so I would think the quad stroller would be the way to go.

Do you own an out n about by any chance? It’s not exactly recommended but our eldest uses the footrest as his seat. I got this idea from a multiples fb group. Your older twins could possibly take turns on this when they need a rest, later down the line

leavesandsleeves · 21/07/2025 20:03

Oh to add, we had a buggy board with saddle for a while but he wasn’t a fan of standing or sitting on it (standing angle wasn’t great and when sitting, I think he might’ve been able to feel every bump). Either that or maybe he didn’t like being at the back. Not sure you’d manage to get 2 on 1 buggy but a baby shop should be able to advise

MattSaracenQB1 · 21/07/2025 20:30

Anniesteel89 on Instagram had a really similar age gap with two sets of twins and talks about her quad pram in her day in the life highlight. I also think she got her local Tesco to get a quad trolley!
